Shailendra Singh Wins Global Award in Turtle Conservation

  • Indian biologist Shailendra Singh was awarded the Behler Turtle Conservation Award for bringing three critically endangered turtle conservation species back from the brink of extinction. Shailendra Singh was named to lead the Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA)/ Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) India turtle programme.
  • The award has been bestowed by several global bodies involved in turtle conservation such as Turtle Survival Alliance, IUCN/SSC Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group, Turtle Conservancy, and Turtle Conservation Fund.
  • The Behler Turtle Conservation Award was established in 2006 to recognise outstanding achievements, contributions and leadership excellence in international turtle conservation and biology.

Namita Gokhale Honoured with 7th Yamin Hazarika Woman of Substance Award

  • Writer Namita Gokhale has been chosen as the recipient of the seventh Yamin Hazarika Woman of Substance Award. She was conferred upon the honour recently in a virtual ceremony. She is a co-founder and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival, Gokhale also mentors Himalayan Echoes and the Kumaon Festival of Literature and the Arts.

Sarabhai Teacher Scientist National Honorary Award 2021

  • 'Super 30' founder and mathematician Anand Kumar was conferred the 'Sarabhai Teacher Scientist National Honorary Award 2021' by the National Council of Teacher Scientist (NCTS) for making mathematics easy to learn and coaching the underprivileged students to succeed in the IIT exams.
  • Kumar, a native of Bihar, who has been coaching underprivileged students since nearly two decades for JEE-Advanced, the entrance exam for the Indian Institutes of Technology, was also awarded the life membership of the organisation during a virtual event held on the occasion of the Teachers' Day.

Indian Naval Aviation Gets President's Colour

  • The Indian Naval Aviation was awarded the President's Colour by President Ram Nath Kovind at a ceremony in Goa.
  • Indian Naval Aviation came into being with acquisition of the first aircraft in January 1951 and today it has nine air stations and three naval air enclaves along the Indian coastline and on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • Over the past seven decades, it has transformed into a modern, technologically advanced and highly potent force with more than 250 aircraft. The Naval aviation played a key role during the stand-off with China.
  • The President's Colour is the highest honour bestowed on a military unit in recognition of its exceptional service to the nation.
  • The Navy was the first amongst the armed forces to be awarded the President's Colour on May 27, 1951 by then President Rajendra Prasad.

National Teachers' Award 2021

  • President Ram Nath Kovind awarded 44 unique teachers from all over India with the National Teachers' Award 2021, on occasion of Teacher's Day, for their exemplary work in education including the development of innovative methods of teaching to improve school education and enrich the lives of students.
  • A documentary film on each of the 44 awardees was also shown at the online ceremony.
  • At the ceremony, the President said that teachers needed to focus on the all-round development of students, while keeping in mind their different needs and interests.

5-star 'Eat Right Station' Certification

  • Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) awarded a 5-star 'Eat Right Station' certification to the Chandigarh Railway Station.
  • This certification was awarded for providing high-quality, nutritious food to passengers.
  • It was awarded the certification after the conclusion of an FSSAI-empanelled third-party audit agency with ratings from 1 to 5.
  • 5-star rating indicates exemplary efforts made by stations in ensuring that safe and hygienic food is available to passengers.
  • The 'Eat Right Station Certification' was the part of the 'Eat Right India' movement. It is a large-scale effort made by FSSAI to transform food system in India in order to ensure safe, healthy and sustainable food for all Indians. As per IRSDC, Eat Right India adopts a mix of regulatory, capacity building, collaborative, and empowerment approaches in ensuring that the food is suitable both for people as well as planet.
  • Chandigarh Railway Station has become the fifth station in India to receive this certification. Other stations with this certification include- Anand Vihar Terminal Railway Station in Delhi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai, Mumbai Central Railway Station in Mumbai and Vadodara Railway Station in Vadodara.
