PM Hasina Receives SDG Progress Award

  • The UN-sponsored Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) conferred Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with "SDG Progress Award" for Bangladesh's steady course in responding to the universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure peace and prosperity for all.
  • Led by prominent economist and development strategist Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, SDSN was set up in 2012 under the auspices of the UN Secretary General.

CBSE Teachers Award 2021

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) felicitated 22 teachers and principals at the CBSE Teachers Award 2021. The awards were felicitated by Minister of State for Education Annapurna Devito to 22 awardees who are primary, secondary, and senior secondary level teachers.
  • The Central Board of Secondary Education instituted the "CBSE Honour for Excellence in Teaching and School Leadership" under the aegis of MoE in the year 2000 to give public recognition to the meritorious services of outstanding teachers of schools affiliated to it. Each award consists of a merit certificate, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs. 50,000.

Ghanaians Celebrate Michaela Coel's Historic Emmy Win

  • Michaela Coel created history at Emmys 2021 as she won an award for best writing for the limited series 'I May Destroy You', becoming the first Black woman to win it.
  • Apart from writing, the British actor created, co-directed, produced and starred in the show as well. 'I May Destroy You' follows the journey of personal identity, while addressing issues like consent and sexual assault. The main character is loosely based on Coel's life, who is a rape victim herself.

Veerappa Moily, Arundhathi Subramaniam, other Winners Receive Sahitya Akademi Award

  • Politician-writer M. Veerappa Moily and poet Arundhathi Subramaniam were among the 20 authors who received the Sahitya Akademi Award for 2020.
  • While Moily received the prestigious award for his epic poetry 'Sri Bahubali Ahimsadigvijayam' in Kannada, Subramaniam won the award for her English poetry collection, 'When God is a Traveller'.
  • The other winners in poetry include Harish Meenakshi (Gujarati), Anamika (Hindi), RS Bhaskar (Konkani), Irungbam Deven (Manipuri), Rupchand Hansda (Santali), and Nikhileswar (Telugu).
  • Nanda Khare (Marathi), Maheshchandra Sharma Gautam (Sanskrit), Imaiyam (Tamil) and Sri Hussain-ul-Haque bagged the award for their novels.
  • Apurba Kumar Saikia (Assamese), (late) Dharanidhar Owari (Bodo), (late) Hiday Koul Bharti (Kashmiri), Kamalkant Jha (Maithili) and Gurdev Singh Rupana (Punjabi) have received the award for short stories.

Earthshot Prize: Two Indian Projects to Get the Prize

  • A 14-year-old Tamil Nadu schoolgirl's solar-powered ironing cart project and a Delhi entrepreneur's agricultural waste recycling concept were named among 15 finalists from hundreds of nominations across the world for the first-ever Earthshot Prize, launched by Britain's Prince William last year (2020).
  • Vinisha Umashankar made the cut within the "Clean Our Air" category with her concept of a solar-powered clean alternative to the charcoal-powered street irons that press clothes for millions of Indians each day. Takachar, co-founded by Vidyut Mohan, has also been nominated in the same category for its cheap, small-scale, portable technology that converts crop residues into sellable bio-products.

Delhi Boy Bags US National Science Bee Competition Award

  • Eight-year-old Delhi boy Advay Misra, who was named one of the 'brightest students in the world' by the John Hopkins University earlier this year, has now bagged the second position in the US National Science Bee 2021 competition.
  • The National Science Bee is a buzzer-based science competition for individual students, with questions ranging from biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, astronomy, mathematics, and other scientific fields. It includes a written qualifying exam and buzzer-based regional and national championships.

UNESCO Literacy Prize Awarded to NIOS

  • The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) of India won the prestigious UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize 2021 for 'enabling education of persons with disabilities through technology-enabled inclusive learning materials, with a specific focus on Indian Sign language-based content'.
  • On behalf of NIOS, professor Saroj Sharma, Chairperson, NIOS received the international Literacy prize and thanked UNESCO for recognising the efforts and innovations of NIOS in the field of education and literacy.
