Indian Organisation LIFE Receives 2021 Right Livelihood Award

  • The Delhi-based environmental organisation "Legal Initiative for Forest and Environment (LIFE)" has been felicitated with the 2021 Right Livelihood Award, an international honour, also known as Sweden's alternative Nobel Prize. LIFE has been selected for the award for its "grassroots approach of empowering vulnerable communities to protect their livelihoods and claim their right to a clean environment."
  • Apart from this, other three awardees who were also honoured include:
  • Cameroonian women rights activist Marthe Wandou
  • Russian environmental activist Vladimir Slivyak
  • Canadian Indigenous rights defender Freda Huson
  • The Award was established in 1980 by German-Swedish philanthropist Jakob von Uexkull to "honour and support those who offer a practical and exemplary contribution in such fields as environmental protection, human rights, sustainable development, health, education, which are not included in Nobel Prize list. The Right Livelihood Award comes with a cash prize of 1 million Swedish crowns ($115,000) and long-term support to highlight and expand Laureates'.

USIBC to Present Global Leadership Award to Shiv Nadar, Mallika Srinivasan

  • Prominent Indian industrialists Shiv Nadar and Mallika Srinivasan were chosen by a top India-centric business advocacy group as the recipients of its 2021 Global Leadership Award.
  • The US India Business Council (USIBC) announced the selection of Nadar, founder and chairman emeritus, HCL Technologies and Srinivasan, chair and managing director, Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited (TAFE), for the award.
  • The two top leaders will be honoured at the 2021 India Ideas Summit to be held on October 6-7.
  • Given annually since 2007, the Global Leadership Awards recognise top corporate executives from the United States and India who have demonstrated exemplary leadership and played a major role in advancing the strategic and economic partnership between the countries.

Mumbai, US Academicians Win 2021 Yidan Prize for Education Research

  • The Mumbai-based Pratham Education Foundation's CEO Dr. Rukmini Banerji and Stanford University's Prof Eric A. Hanushek were awarded the '2021 Yidan Prize for Education Research', carrying an award of $3.90 million, or almost Rs. 28-crore, for each laureate, making it the world's highest education accolade.
  • The coveted award from the Yidan Prize Foundation, Hong Kong, has recognised their ground-breaking work addressing a crucial piece of the education puzzle pertaining to 'improving quality of education and outcomes for learners at scale.

Yemeni Humanitarian Organisation Wins Nansen Refugee Award 2021

  • A humanitarian organisation from Yemen has been declared as the winner of the 2021 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award. The organisation named "Jeel Albena Association for Humanitarian Development", founded in 2017 by Ameen Jubran has won the prestigious honour to support and provide a lifeline to tens of thousands of Yemenis people displaced by the country's conflict.
  • The UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award honours individuals, groups or organisations for going above and beyond the call of duty to protect refugees, other displaced and stateless people.

Right Livelihood Award 2021

  • Right Livelihood Award 2021 was conferred to Delhi-based environmental organisation "Legal Initiative for Forest and Environment (LIFE)". This award is also known as "Sweden's alternative Nobel Prize".

  • Right Livelihood Award was established by Ole von Uexkull who happens to be the executive director of Right Livelihood. The award honours and supports people in solving global problems.
