Journalists Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov Win Nobel Peace Prize 2021

  • Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov won the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace. Maria Ressa is CEO of Philippines based news organisation Rappler while Dmitry Andreyevich Muratov is editor-in-chief of the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta.
  • Committee chair Berit Reiss-Andersen said that Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize are representatives of all journalists who stand up for this ideal in a world in which democracy and freedom of the press face increasingly adverse conditions.

Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank Bags Two National Awards

  • Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB), sponsored by Canara Bank, has bagged two national awards ('APY Big Believers' and 'Leadership capital') for significant enrolment under the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) from the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).
  • KVGB Chairman P. Gopi Krishna received the awards from PFRDA Chairman Supratim Bandopadhyay at Chennai.

Nobel Literature Prize: Abdulrazak Gurnah Wins Award

  • Tanzanian writer Abdulrazak Gurnah was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for works that explore the legacies of imperialism on uprooted individuals.
  • The award was in recognition of his "uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents".
  • Born in Zanzibar in 1948 and based in England, Gurnah is a professor at the University of Kent. He is the author of 10 novels, including "Paradise," which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1994.

Benjamin List and David MacMillan are Winners of Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2021

  • The Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded to Benjamin List and David WC MacMillan.
  • They were cited for their work in developing a new way for building molecules known as 'asymmetric organocatalysis.'
  • The winners were announced by Goran Hansson, secretary-general of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
  • List and MacMillan in 2000 independently developed a new way of catalysis.
  • The prestigious award comes with a gold medal and 10 million Swedish kronor (over $1.14 million). The prize money comes from a bequest left by the prize's creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1895.

M. Venkaiah Naidu Presents Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Award

  • Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu presented Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Award for National Integration and National Contribution. This award was conferred to eminent writer Nirode Kumar Barooah, Assam Branch of the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust and Shillong Chamber Choir at a special function in Guwahati. The award carries a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakh, a citation, and a shawl. It is one of the biggest civilian awards of Assam.
  • This award was instituted by the Assam government in memory of the state's first Chief Minister Gopinath Bordoloi.
  • The Assam branch of the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust was founded by Mahatma Gandhi on 9th January 1946.

Nobel Physics Prize Goes to 3 for Work on Complex Physical Systems

  • Japanese-born American Syukuro Manabe, German Klaus Hasselmann, and Italian Giorgio Parisi won the 2021 Nobel Prize for Physics for work that helps understand complex physical systems such as Earth's changing climate.
  • In a decision hailed by the UN weather agency as a sign of a consensus forming around man-made global warming, one half of the 10-million Swedish crown ($1.15-million) prize went in equal parts to Manabe and Hasselmann for modelling earth's climate and reliably predicting global warming.
  • The other half went to Parisi for discovering in the early 1980s "hidden rules" behind seemingly random movements and swirls in gases or liquids, which can also be applied to aspects of neuroscience, machine learning and starling flight formations.

T. Shanmuganantham Conferred the 'International Researcher Award 2021

  • T. Shanmuganantham, Associate Professor, Department of Electronics Engineering, Pondicherry University, has been conferred the 'International Researcher Award 2021' from International Research Association, England, United Kingdom (UK).
  • The award is in recognition of research contributions of Mr. Shanmuganantham spanning 20 years. This includes 285 Scopus publications as per Scopus database, 112 Web of Science Publications, 115 Articles in ORCID and 30.02 Research Gate points.
  • The award was presented at a virtual ceremony.
  • The International Research Association has instituted the awards to honour researchers for excellence in various fields of science and technology.

Nobel Prize in Medicine for Discovery of Temperature, Touch Receptors

  • Two US-based scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for their discovery of the receptors that allow humans to feel temperature and touch.
  • David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian focused their work on the field of somatosensation that is the ability of specialized organs such as eyes, ears and skin to see, hear and feel.
  • Julius used capsaicin, the active component in chili peppers, to identify the nerve sensors that allow the skin to respond to heat.
  • Patapoutian found separate pressure-sensitive sensors in cells that respond to mechanical stimulation.
  • The pair shared the prestigious Kavli Award for Neuroscience last year.
