KVASU Bags National Award for Breed Conservation

  • The All India Co-ordinated Research Project (AICRP) on poultry breeding, Mannuthy, under the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Science University (KVASU), bagged the national breed conservation award for 2021. The centre received the prestigious award from ICAR – The National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) for the conservation and research activities on the Tellicherry breed, the only registered native chicken breed from the State.
  • The centre started conservation of the Tellicherry breed in 2014. Through scientific selection and management, the breed began laying eggs as early as in five months and the annual egg production increased to 160-170 eggs.
  • The award carries a citation and a purse of Rs. 10,000.
  • The award was established by ICAR – NBAGR for their contribution towards the conservation and improvement of registered Indian breeds of domestic livestock and poultry.

D. S. Nagabhushan Bags Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award

  • Literary critic D.S. Nagabhushan was awarded the Kendra Sahitya Akademi award for 2021 for his work Gandhi Kathana, biography of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • While Basu Bevinagidad won the Bal Sahitya Puraskar for his children's novel Odi Hoda Huduga, H. Lakshmi Narayan Swamy was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar for his poetry Togala Cheelada Karna.

Winners of Sahitya Akademi Award 2021

  • Tamil writer Ambai, author Namita Gokhale, TMC MLA Bratya Basu and noted Punjabi writer Khalid Hussian were among the 20 names announced for the Sahitya Akademi Award 2021.
  • The annual awards, given in 20 Indian languages, included seven books of poetry, two novels, five short stories, two plays, one book each of biography, autobiography, criticism and epic poetry.
  • The awards for Gujarati, Maithili, Manipuri and Urdu languages would be announced at a later date.
  • The books were selected on the basis of recommendations made by a jury of three members in the concerned languages in accordance with the procedure laid down for the purpose.

Vimala Pai Konkani Annual Literary Awards

  • The Konkani Bhas Ani Sanskriti Prathistan, World Konkani Centre, Mangaluru, announced Smt. Vimala V. Pai Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Puraskar, annual literary awards for Konkani Literature, for the year 2021.
  • Massam, a collection of Konkani short stories by Antony Barkur (Antony Prakash D'Souza) was chosen as the Best Konkani Book of the Year (Prose), while Indradhonu Udeum, a collection of Konkani poems by Uday Narasinha Mhambro, was selected as the Best Konkani Book of the Year (Poetry).
  • The awards are based on a two-tier evaluation process. Firstly, a preliminary panel consisting of 16 referees recommends books shortlisted from among those published during the award period. Based on these recommendations, a five-member jury makes the final selections for the award.
  • World Konkani Centre founded by Konkani Bhas Ani Sanskriti Prathistan, a premier Konkani organisation established in 1996 under the leadership of Vishwa Konkani Sardar Basti Vaman Shenoy, has been relentlessly working towards preservation of Konkani language and culture since inception.

The Hindu's Shiv Sahay Singh Wins Prize at Ramnath Goenka Award

  • The Hindu's West Bengal correspondent Shiv Sahay Singh won the Ramnath Goenka Award in the "Uncovering India Invisible" category for his 2019 story "Death by Digital Exclusion" which exposed how the Jharkhand government's insistence on digitisation deprived people living on the margins of the benefits of the public distribution system (PDS).

Viral Desai Bags "Global Environment and Climate Action Citizen Award 2021"

  • Viral Sudhirbhai Desai, an industrialist from Surat, who is popularly known as the Greenman or green man of Gujarat was honoured with the Global Environment and Climate Action Citizen Award 2021. Among the 28 personalities from 11 countries (which includes the United Kingdom, the United States, New Zealand, France, and Malaysia,) who were honoured with this award, Viral Desai was the only Indian to win the honour for climate change.
