Karnataka Bank Gets Digital Transformation Award, 'DX 2021 Awards'

  • Karnataka Bank was awarded the digital transformation award, 'DX 2021 Awards', in recognition of the "innovative" best practice 'KBL VIKAAS', by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for Best Practice in Digital Transformation.
  • KBL VIKAAS, a wholistic transformation journey, launched by the bank in 2017, has enabled the bank in implementation of digital capabilities, namely, digital journeys for assets and liability products, enhancement in customer experience under ADC products and bringing in a strong culture of sales and marketing. The bank recently launched the digital transformation journey 'KBL NxT' as part of wave 2.0 of 'KBL VIKAAS', with an objective of taking the digital initiatives to the next level and eventually emerge as 'the digital bank of future.

Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve Bags TX2 Award

  • Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (Erode district, Tamil Nadu) was given the prestigious TX2 award after its tiger numbers doubled to 80 since 2010. Apart from the STR, the Bardia National Park in Nepal won this year's TX2 award for doubling the population of wild tigers. Sathyamangalam wildlife sanctuary was declared a tiger reserve in 2013 and the reserve that spreads across 1,411.60 sq km is an important link between the Nilgiris and Eastern Ghats landscape. The Nilgiri biosphere landscape that this reserve is part of is currently the home to the largest tiger population in the world. It is connected to other well-established tiger habitats like Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Bandipur Tiger Reserve and BR Hills Tiger Reserve.
  • The award acknowledges the efforts by the State governments and the local communities which have played one of the most important roles to turn a relatively new tiger reserve into one of the source populations of tigers in India. The awards are presented by the Conservation Assured Tiger Standards (CA|TS), Fauna and Flora International (FFI), Global Tiger Forum (GTF), IUCN's Integrated Tiger Habitat Conservation Programme (ITHCP), Panthera, UNDP, The Lion's Share, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and WWF.

Assam Government Awards 'Asom Baibhav Award' to Ratan Tata

  • The government of Assam conferred its highest civilian award 'Assam Baibhav' on industrialist Ratan Tata. Assam governor Jagdish Mukhi conferred the award to the former chairman of Tata Sons. The Assam government conferred 'Assam Baibhav' to Ratan Tata for his contribution to setting up cancer treatment facilities in the state.
  • Assam Saurav award was conferred on Professor Dipak Chand Jain, Lovlina Borgohain, Professor Kamalendu Deb Krori, Dr Lakshmanan S, and Neel Pawan Baruah.
  • Assam Gaurav award was conferred on Manoj Kumar Basumatary, Munindra Nath Ngatey, Dharanidhar Boro, Hemoprabha Chutia, Dr Basanta Hazarika, Kaushik Baruah, Khorsing Terang, Akash Jyoti Gogoi, Namita Kalita, Dr Asif Iqbal, Kalpana Boro, Boby Hazarika, and Bormita Momin.

Gen Rawat awarded Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan for Google, Microsoft CEOs

  • Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Hindutva poster boy late Kalyan Singh and India's first Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat who died in a helicopter crash were awarded Padma Vibhushan, while veteran Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and former West Bengal CM and CPI(M) leader Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee were given Padma Bhushan.
  • Cyrus Poonawalla of the Serum Institute of India, which manufactured COVID-19 vaccine Covishield, and Krishna Ella and Suchitra Ella of Bharat Biotech, which produced India's indigenous coronavirus vaccine Covaxin, were also given Padma Bhushan.
  • Kalyan Singh and General Rawat were given Padma Vibhushan, the country's second-highest civilian award, posthumously.
  • Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Google CEO Sundar Pichai were conferred Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award.

Jhajharia Honoured with Padma Bhushan, Neeraj Chopra Gets Padma Shri

  • Star para athlete Devendra Jhajharia was named for the prestigious Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian honour in the country while Olympic gold winning javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was among the eight sportspersons named for Padma Shri award.
  • Jhajharia has two gold medals in the javelin competition of Paralympic Games, 2004 Athens and in Rio 2016.
  • He won a silver in the F46 event at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021.
  • Chopra, the 24-year-old javelin thrower, made history in the Tokyo Olympics by becoming the first Indian to win a gold in a track and field event in Games' history.
  • He also became only the second Indian to win an individual Olympic gold after shooter Abhinav Bindra.

Shankarnarayan Honored with Padma Shri, at the Age of 93

  • The martial art of Kerala instructor Sankaranarayan Menon received the Padma Shri at the age of 93 years. On the 63rd Republic Day, the names of the recipients of the Padma Awards were announced by the Central Government.
  • Sankaranarayanan Menon is 93 years old and is still the chief instructor of Vallabhatta Kalari (a variant of Kalaripayattu) in Kerala. Under his leadership, about 5000 youth are learning martial arts, including women. The entire family of Shankarnarayan is associated with this martial art. Sankaranarayana's family used to lead the army of the king of Vettathu Nadu at Labar.

National Start-up Awards 2021 Announced

  • National Start-up Awards 2021 was the second edition of the award ceremony, conceived by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). A total of 46 Start-ups were recognized as winners of the National Startup Awards 2021 along with 1 incubator and 1 accelerator, by the Government of India. They have been felicitated for their contribution in their respective sectors.

  • State-wise, Karnataka bagged the highest number of awards, which included 14 out of 46 National Start-up Awards.
  • In fintech category's financial inclusion sub-sector, Bengaluru-based Naffa Innovations Private Limited (ToneTag) was declared the winner.
  • In fintech category's insurance sub-sector, Umbo Idtech Private Limited won the award.
  • In Robotics sub-sector, Sagar Defence was declared the winner.
  • In the women-led start-up category, Jaipur-headquartered Frontier Markets was honoured.
  • Over 2,177 applications were invited across 15 sectors and 49 sub-sectors for the award.
  • These applicants were evaluated against six broad parameters namely Innovation, Scalability, Economic Impact, Social Impact, Environmental Impact, and Inclusiveness and Diversity.
  • The National Start-up Awards recognize and reward outstanding start-ups and ecosystem enablers that are building innovative products or solutions and scalable enterprises.

Koozhangal Gets the Best Film Award at Dhaka International Film Festival

  • P. S. Vinothraj directed film Koozhangal from India won the best film award in the Asian Film Competition section at the 20th Dhaka International Film Festival which concluded in Dhaka.
  • Apart from this, four more Indian entries were included among the 17 awards given away for the films during the concluding session.
  • The best actor award was given to Jayasurya for Ranjith Sankar-directed film Sunny. The Best Script Writer Award went to Indranil Roychowdhury and Sugata Sinha for Indranil Roychowdhury-directed India-Bangladesh film Mayar Jonjal.
  • The special audience award was given to Aimee Baruah Directed film Semkhor. Best Actor Award went to Jayasurya for Ranjith Sankar-directed film Sunny.
  • Sujit Bidari directed film Aina Jhyal Ko Putali from Nepal got the best director award.
