Mamata Banerjee Honoured with Special Bangla Academy Award

  • West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee was honoured with Special Bangla Academy Award in May 2022. The award, introduced this year, was announced for the Chief Minister's book, 'Kabita Bitan' a collection of over 900 poems.
  • Ratna Rashid Banerjee, a Bengali writer returned an award given to her by Paschimbanga Bangla Academy to protest its decision to confer a special award on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her contribution to the cause of literature. Ratna Rashid Banerjee returned the 'Annada Shankar Smarak Samman' with which she was honoured by the academy in 2019.

Late Journalist Danish Siddiqui Wins Second Pulitzer Prize, This Time for Covid Coverage in India

  • Indian photographer, who was killed while covering fighting in Afghanistan, was part of a team that took home the Pulitzer for feature photography. Danish Siddiqui and his colleagues Adnan Abidi, Sanna Irshad Mattoo, and Amit Dave won for images depicting the toll of the Covid-19 pandemic in India. Their work, which was moved from the breaking photography category by the judges, "balanced intimacy and devastation, while offering viewers a heightened sense of place," the committee wrote.
  • Siddiqui, was also part of the Reuters photography team to win the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for feature photography for documenting the Rohingya refugee crisis.

President Kovind confers 13 Shaurya Chakra awards, including six posthumously

  • President Ram Nath Kovind conferred 13 Shaurya Chakra awards, including six posthumously, to armed forces personnel while Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande received the Param Vishisht Seva medal. The Shaurya Chakra is India's third-highest peacetime gallantry award after the Ashok Chakra and Kirti Chakra. The awards were conferred at a ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
    • The gallantry awards were given to the personnel for displaying conspicuous gallantry, indomitable courage and extreme devotion to duty. 
    • The President also conferred 14 Param Vishisht Seva Medals, four Uttam Yudh Seva Medals and 24 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals for distinguished service of exceptional order.

Home Minister Amit Shah Confers President's Colours Award to Assam Police

  • Home Minister Amit Shah presented the President's Colours Award to Assam Police at a Special Ceremony at Guwahati. Assam is the 10th state in the country to receive this honour which is conferred as recognition for exceptional services. Mr. Shah said that almost all militant organisations have joined the mainstream of the society and government has rehabilitated all of them. Insurgency and bloodshed has come to an end and peace has returned after decades.
  • The President's Colours, a special flag, also known as 'Nishaan' is the highest honour to be given to any military or police unit in recognition of exceptional service rendered to the nation, both in peace and war. It is an emblem worn by all the officers in the unit on the left-hand sleeve of their uniform.
  • Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Gujarat and Tripura are the other states which have received the President's Colour Award so far. Delhi is the only Union Territory to bag this prestigious award.

NASA's Cynthia Rosenzweig Receives the 2022 World Food Prize

  • A senior research scientist and head of the Climate Impacts Group at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City, Cynthia Rosenzweig received the 2022 World Food Prize from the World Food Prize Foundation. Rosenzweig was selected for the award for her research to understand the relationship between climate and food systems and forecast how both will change in the future.
  • Her modelling work has provided a foundation for decision-makers around the world to create strategies to mitigate climate change and adapt our food systems to a changing planet, which has helped communities worldwide address the consequences of Earth's changing climate.
  • Rosenzweig has been a research scientist at NASA GISS and head of the Climate Impacts Group since 1994. Her research focuses on improving models and assessments of how climate change will affect agriculture and the food supply in the future.

Two Indian Groups Win NASA 2022 Human Exploration Rover Challenge

  • Two Indian student groups from Punjab and Tamil Nadu won the NASA 2022 Human Exploration Rover Challenge. Announced by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration during a virtual awards ceremony, the challenge involved as many as 91 teams, including 58 colleges and 33 high schools.
  • The challenge required US and international student teams to design, engineer, and test a human-powered rover on a course simulating terrain found on rocky bodies in the solar system. The teams also performed mission assignments, including sample retrievals and spectrographic analysis, while negotiating the course.
  • Decent Children Model Presidency School from Punjab was the winner of the STEM Engagement Award in the High School division. The team from Vellore Institute of Technology in Tamil Nadu was declared the winner in the College/University division in the Social Media Award.
