Veteran Congress Leader Nandi Yellaiah Passes Away

Veteran Congress leader Nandi Yellaiah, who was elected to Lok Sabha six times and Rajya Sabha twice, died while under treatment at the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences. He was 78.
He was admitted with illness at NIMS where he tested positive for coronavirus.
Yellaiah was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Siddipet in 1979 and repeated the feat from the same constituency in 1980, 1989, 1991 and 1996. He lost elections to Telugu Desam candidates in 1984 and 1998. After two stints in the Rajya Sabha from 2002 to 2014, he was re-elected to the Lok Sabha but this time from Nagarkurnool constituency (SC) in 2014. He continued in the post till general elections last year.
Yellaiah began his political career as a corporator of Hyderabad Municipal Corporation in 1964. He was a close associate of former Chief Minister Marri Channa Reddy.

Educationist Pradeep Kumar Joshi New Chairman of UPSC

Educationist Pradeep Kumar Joshi was appointed the chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which conducts the civil services examination to select the country's bureaucrats and diplomats.
He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Arvind Saxena, the outgoing chairman of the UPSC.
Joshi joined the Commission as its member in May 2015. Prior to joining the Commission, he was the chairman of the Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission and the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission, the statement issued by the UPSC said. He also served as the Director of National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA).
His tenure as the chairman of the UPSC will be till May 2021. With his appointment as the chairman, there is a vacancy of a member in the UPSC. At present, Bhim Sain Bassi, Air Marshal A. S. Bhonsle (retired), Sujata Mehta, Manoj Soni, Smita Nagaraj, M Sathiyavathy, Bharat Bhushan Vyas, T. C. A. Anant and Rajiv Nayan Choubey are members of the UPSC.

Hardayal Prasad New MD of PNB Housing Finance

PNB Housing Finance appointed Hardayal Prasad, the former SBI Card head as its new managing director and chief executive.
The housing finance company promoted by country's second largest state-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) currently has Neeraj Vyas as its interim chief. Prasad will assume charge on August 10.
Prasad a seasoned professional with over three decades of experience in banking, international operations at SBI and later with SBI Card had last month resigned as the managing director and chief executive of SBI Card pursuant to voluntary retirement from SBI.

Author and Activist Sadia Dehlvi Passes Away

Noted Delhi-based writer and activist Sadia Dehlvi has passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer. She was 63.
Sadia, who hailed from the royal 'Shama' family, edited 'Bano', an Urdu women's journal. Her grandfather, Hafiz Yusuf Dehlvi, founded in 1938 Shama, an iconic Urdu film and literary monthly.
A well-known food connoisseur, she wrote a book on Delhi's culinary history in 2017, titled 'Jasmine & Jinns: Memories and Recipes of My Delhi'.
A woman of many talents, Sadia also produced and scripted documentaries and television programmes, including 'Amma and Family' (1995), starring Zohra Sehgal, a veteran stage actor.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar Passes Away

Senior Congressman and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar passed away. He was 88.
Mr. Patil Nilangekar had the briefest run as Chief Minister of Maharashtra, serving in that capacity for less than a year between June1985 and March 1986 after controversial circumstances forced him to resign.
He resigned from the post when the Bombay High Court passed strictures against him after fraud was alleged in the results of the MD examination in 1985 "at his behest" to help his daughter and her friend get through.
A powerful cooperative leader from Latur, his grandson Sambhaji Patil is a BJP MLA and was the labour minister in the Devendra Fadnavis-led government.
Shri Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar was a stalwart of Maharashtra politics. He served the state diligently, especially working for the welfare of farmers and the poor.

John Hume: Nobel Peace Prize Winner Passes Away

The Nobel Peace Prize winner and prominent Northern Ireland politician John Hume died aged 83.
One of the highest-profile politicians in Northern Ireland for more than 30 years, he helped create the climate that brought an end to the Troubles.
He was a founding member of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) in 1970 and led the party from 1979 until 2001.
Mr Hume played a major role in the peace talks, which led to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
He was widely admired for his steadfast commitment to peaceful, democratic politics during three decades of violence in Northern Ireland.
