Former Maharashtra minister and senior Congress leader Eknath Gaikwad passed away. He was 81.
The former MP was the father of Maharashtra School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad.
Eknath Gaikwad had also served as the president of the Mumbai Congress.

Eminent Odia and English Writer Manoj Das Dead
A Padma awardee and an eminent 20th century Odia and English writer, Manoj Das, died in Puducherry. He was 87. He was under treatment for old-age related ailments.
For his work in Odia, Das is best known for 'Shesha Basantara Chithi', 'Manoj Dasanka Katha o Kahani', 'Dhumabha Diganta', 'Manojpancabimsati' (short stories), 'Tuma Gam o Anyanya Kabita' (poetry). His notable English works include, The crocodiles lady: A collection of stories, The submerged valley and other stories, Farewell to a ghost: Short stories and a novelette, Cyclones, A tiger at twilight, Mystery of the Missing Cap and other short stories.
In 2004, he wrote his memoir Chasing the Rainbow: Growing up in an Indian Village.
A number of his short stories were translated into major Indian and foreign languages. He received numerous national awards, including the Padma Bhushan last year. He was also awarded with the Kendriya Sahitya Akademi Award, Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award, Sarala Award, Sahitya Bharati Award, Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad (Kolkata) Award, Sri Aurobindo Puraskar (Kolkata) and BAPASI (Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India) Award as the best writer in English in the South.
Noted Hindi Litterateur Manzoor Ahthesham Passes Away
Noted Hindi litterateur and Padma Shri awardee Manzoor Ahthesham died in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh.
Incidentally, Ahthesham''s first story was titled ''Ramzan Ki Maut'' and he died in the holy month currently underway.
He did his studies at the Aligarh Muslim University. He was the author of five novels and several short story anthologies and plays.

Waman Bhonsle, National Award-winning Film Editor Passes Away
National-award winning editor Waman Bhonsle passed away. He was 87.
Bhonsle won the best editing award at the 25th National Film award for 'Inkaar'.
Born in Pomburpa village in Goa, Bhonsle came to Mumbai in 1952 in search of a job and later started training under his family-friend, "Pakeezah" fame editor D N Pai, at the Bombay Talkies.
Former Maruti Suzuki MD Jagdish Khattar Passes Away
Former managing director of Maruti Suzuki India, Jagdish Khattar, passed away.
Khattar, a former bureaucrat, was considered as one of the most high profile leaders of the Indian automotive industry, laying the foundation for Maruti's future growth after the government began its disinvestment in 2002 and gradually exited from its joint venture with Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC).
He had joined the then Maruti Udyog Ltd in July 1993 as director (marketing) and went on to become executive director (marketing) in the next six years. He was promoted as joint managing director in 1999, a year that saw various disagreements between SMC and the government.

Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana takes oath as 48th Chief Justice of India
Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana took oath as the 48th Chief Justice of India. President Ram Nath Kovind administered him the oath of office at a brief ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He succeeds Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde who demitted office.
Justice Ramana will have a tenure of nearly 16 months as the Chief Justice and is due to retire on 26th August next year.
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Judges of Supreme Court and several senior officials were present at the oath-taking ceremony.
Born on 27th August 1957 in Ponnavaram village of Andhra Pradesh's Krishna district, Justice Ramana was enrolled as an advocate in February 1983. He was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in June 2000 and functioned as acting Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court from March to May 2013. Justice Ramana was elevated as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in September, 2013 and was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court on February 2014.
Classical Singer Rajan Mishra Passes Away
Classical singer Rajan Mishra, a Padma Bhushan awardee, died of complications caused by COVID-19 at a hospital. He was 70.
Belonging to the Benaras gharana, Mr. Mishra, along with brother Sajan Mishra, made a mark for himself as a vocalist in the khyal style of Indian classical singing.
Sitarist Anoushka Shankar also paid her tributes to the late singer in a tweet. "RIP dear, legendary Pandit Rajan Mishra. Your recitals and alaaps are an indelible part of my childhood and musical upbringing. Thinking so much of your family."

Padma Awardee and Islamic Scholar Maulana Wahiduddin Khan Dies
Islamic scholar and Padma Vibhushan awardee Maulana Wahiduddin Khan passed.
He was 97 years old and was admitted to a private hospital last week after he had a chest infection and had tested positive for Covid-19 too.
He was founder of the Islamic Centre in New Delhi. The Islamic scholar was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2000, and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan this year (2021).
