The initiative aims to harness the region's immense sporting talent and promote traditional games, further integrating the Northeast into the national sports landscape.
He emphasised the government's commitment to transforming the region into a vibrant sports hub, aligning with national aspirations like hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games and 2036 Summer Olympics.

India's Tejaswini secured a gold medal in the women's 25m pistol event at the ISSF Junior World Cup, enabling India to surpass China and claim the top position in the standings.
The 20-year-old from Haryana clinched her first individual World Cup medal with a final score of 31.
This remarkable victory not only marked a personal milestone for her but also contributed to India's tally—becoming the country's 11th medal of the campaign and third gold, alongside four silver and four bronze medals.

Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews announces retirement from Test cricket

Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews announced his retirement from the red-ball format on Friday.
The 37-year-old has played in 118 Tests and scored 8167, which is the third-highest tally in Sri Lanka's history, behind Kumar Sangakkara (12,400) and Mahela Jayawardene (11,814).
He scored 16 tons and 45 half-centuries in his career with a highest score of 200 not out.
He will, however, continue to play white-ball cricket for his country.
His final Test appearance will be in Galle from June 17 to 21.

England's premier batsman Joe Root etched his name in the annals of cricket history by becoming the fastest player to reach 13,000 runs in Test cricket.
Joe Root reached a historic milestone during England's one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge on May 22, 2025.
With a composed innings of 34 runs, Root surpassed the legendary Jacques Kallis to become the fastest player to score 13,000 Test runs. He achieved this feat in just 153 matches, breaking Kallis's long-standing record of 159 Tests.
This feat not only underscores Root's consistency and excellence but also places him among cricket's all-time greats.
