Spain and Liverpool Legend Pepe Reina to Retire at 42

  • Former Spain and Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has officially announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the 2024–25 season. Currently playing for Como in Serie A, the 42-year-old will conclude a remarkable career that has spanned over two decades and included over 1,000 competitive appearances across some of Europe's top clubs. Reina, known for his consistency and leadership, will play his final match against Inter Milan.

India's Faizan Anwar Beats Ghana's Kpakpo in Main Event; Danylo Wins WBA Asia Middle-East Title

  • India's undefeated pro-boxer Faizan Anwar secured a dominant victory over Ghana's Kpakpo Allotey in the 10-round Welterweight international professional boxing clash in the main event of the Super Fighter Series 3 at the Sunburn Union.
  • The co-main event for the WBA Asia Middle-East Super Lightweight title saw Danylo Honcharul of Ukraine defeat Ruslan Kamilov of Dagestan. After his opponent retired in Round 3, Danylo took the victory and the title, and a Technical Knockout was awarded to him.

First-ever Khelo India Beach Games in Diu

  • Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated the first-ever Khelo India Beach Games at Ghoghla Beach in the union territory of Diu. Mandaviya said, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several steps have been taken to promote sports in the country.
  • More than 1000 athletes from across the country are competing in six medal events and two demonstration sports over the next six days. This is the first time the Beach Games are being held under the ever-expanding Khelo India umbrella. The medal events include beach soccer, beach volleyball, beach kabaddi, beach sepak takraw, pencak silat, and open water swimming. Two traditional demonstration sports – mallakhamb and tug-of-war will also be staged during the games. Minister of State for Sports Raksha Khadse, administrator of the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Praful Patel, along with several top sportspersons, graced the opening ceremony, which showcased rich culture of the region, including Gujarat's folk dance Garba. The games, which commenced on May 19, will culminate on May 24, 2025.

Alcaraz Captures Seventh ATP Masters 1000 Title

  • Young Spanish tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz ended world number one Jannik Sinner's 26-match winning streak, securing the Italian Open title in Rome.
  • With this victory, Alcaraz secured his seventh ATP Masters 1000 title. He defeated Sinner by 7-6(5), 6-1 in an absorbing match-up that lasted an hour and 44 minutes. He saved two set points in the first set and never looked back from there.
  • The 2025 edition of the Italian Open was the 82nd edition of the Italian Open.

Junior Women's Hockey Team to Compete in Four-Nation Tournament in Argentina

  • The Indian junior women's hockey team is all set to embark on an exciting tour of Argentina for a friendly Four Nations Tournament, scheduled from May 25 to June 2, 2025.
  • The team will play six friendly matches against Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile.
  • The tournament will begin on May 25, with India playing back-to-back matches against Chile and Uruguay on May 25 and 26, respectively. After a rest day, they will face hosts Argentina on May 28.
  • The team will then follow the same sequence in the return leg, taking on Chile on May 30, Uruguay on June 1, and Argentina on June 2.
  • This tour is a crucial part of the team's preparations for the FIH Hockey Junior Women's World Cup, scheduled to take place in Santiago, Chile, in December 2025.
