Australia's Tour of Pakistan after 24 Years Confirmed

  • Cricket Australia (CA) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that Australia men's team tour of Pakistan will start with Rawalpindi hosting the first Test on March 4. It also means that Australia's first trip to Pakistan for the first time since 1998 is all set to happen.
  • After the first Test at Rawalpindi, the next two Tests will be played in Karachi and Lahore. It will be followed by three ODIs and a T20I to be played at Rawalpindi from March 29 to April 5. The schedule has been revised to ease logistical and operational challenges as well as to avoid Pakistan Day rehearsals, which usually commence in Islamabad in the second week of March.

Kerala's Famed Nehru Trophy Boat Race to be Held in UAE

  • The Nehru Trophy boat race, one of the famed events held in Alappuzha of Kerala, is slated to be held in Ras al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this year.
  • The move is to build on the beautiful relationship between UAE and Kerala.
  • The race, named after former prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru, will be held on March 27, 2022 in partnership with International Marine Sports Club Ras Al Khaimah and TheBrew Media FZC LLC, at the Al Marjan Island.
  • The Nehru Trophy boat race is amongst the pioneer snake boat races in Kerala where millions of audiences gather to watch nearly 100 feet long boats compete against one another to the tunes of old folk songs.
  • The name of the water race was coined following Jawaharlal Nehru's visit to Kerala in 1952. He was so enchanted by the sight of the majestic snake boats, that he leapt into one of the snake boats himself, ignoring his security cover.

Justin Langer Resigns as Australia Coach ahead of Pakistan Tour

  • Justin Langer resigned as coach of the Australian men's cricket team.
  • Langer's future had appeared uncertain following the long meeting with Cricket Australia. He took over the position in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in 2018. His contract was due to expire this year.

Xi Jinping Launches Beijing Winter Olympics

  • Beijing became the first city to host both the summer and winter Olympic Games with a grand opening ceremony.
  • Chinese President Xi Jinping declared the games open in a ceremony at the Bird's Nest National Stadium, which was built for, and launched, the summer Olympics in 2008 as well. Also as in 2008, the lavish opening ceremony was directed by the renowned Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou.
  • Among foreign leaders in attendance at opening were Russian President Vladimir Putin, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, five Presidents from Central Asia, President Halimah Yacob of Singapore, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi of Egypt and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia.

Surfing and Skateboarding in Sports List at 2028 LA Olympic Games

  • The 2028 summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles will pay homage to Southern California's extreme sports culture with the addition of skateboarding, surfboarding and rock climbing to its list of eligible sports.
  • The International Olympic Committee approved a propo¬sal to include the three sports in the Los Ange¬les games — scheduled for July 21 to August 6, 2028.
  • Skateboarding, sport clim¬bing and surfing made their Olympic debut at the Tokyo su¬mmer games and are exp¬ected to feature in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as well.

New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell Wins ICC's 'Spirit of Cricket' Award

  • New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell was named the recipient of 2021's ICC 'Spirit of Cricket' award for not taking an easy single during the T20 World Cup semi-final against England as he felt he had obstructed the way of bowler Adil Rashid in that moment.
  • Mitchell won the award for his gesture during the game in Abu Dhabi in November 2021, which New Zealand won by five wickets.
  • Mitchell is the fourth New Zealand player to win the award, following in the footsteps of Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson.

Neeraj Chopra Nominated for Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award

  • India's Olympic gold medal-winning javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was nominated for the prestigious Laureus 'World Breakthrough of the Year' award.
  • He was clubbed alongside tennis stars Daniil Medvedev and Emma Raducanu among others in the shortlist.
  • He is now only the third Indian to fetch a Laureus nomination after cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and wrestler Vinesh Phogat.
  • The winners will be revealed in April, following a vote by the Laureus World Sports Academy, the world's ultimate sports jury, made up of 71 of the greatest sporting legends of all time.

Chennai Super Kings Becomes India's First Unicorn Sports Enterprise

  • Ahead of the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), one of its most successful franchises, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), became the country's first sports Unicorn with its market cap having touched a high of Rs. 7,600 crore and its share in the grey market trading in the Rs. 210-225 price band.
  • The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led CSK, which won its fourth IPL title in Dubai last year, now has a market cap more than its parent entity, India Cements.
