Keegan Petersen, Heather Knight ICC Players of the Month for January

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced Heather Knight and Keegan Petersen as the winners of the ICC Players of the Month Award for January 2022.
  • Petersen pipped compatriot Dewald Brevis and Bangladesh fast bowler Ebadot Hossain to claim the ICC men's player of the month award for January. Among women, Knight won the award. Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu and West Indies star Deandra Dottin were the other contenders.

J-K Alpine Skier Arif Khan Fails to Finish Men's Slalom Event at Winter Olympics

  • India's campaign at the Winter Olympics came to disappointing end after the country's lone participant, alpine skier Arif Khan, logged a 'Did Not Finish' in the men's slalom event.
  • The 31-year-old from Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir, who had finished 45th in the giant slalom event, was unable to complete Run 1 at the Yanqing National Alpine Skiing Centre.
  • Since Khan, who was making his Winter Olympics debut, was unable to finish Run 1, he won't be competing in the second run of men's slalom event.

Kolkata Knight Riders Appoint Shreyas Iyer as New Captain

  • Kolkata Knight Riders appointed India batter Shreyas Iyer as their new captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League after having bought him for a whopping Rs. 12.25 crore at the mega auction.
  • Iyer, who had captained Delhi Capitals to their only IPL final back in 2020, was released after the 2021 season and it was an open secret that KKR, who were supposed to replace Eoin Morgan, were in need of a new captain.

  • Andy Murray Accepts wild Card for Dubai Tennis Championships
  • Former world number one and 2017 champion Andy Murray will make a return to the Dubai Tennis Championships after accepting a wild card.
  • The ATP 500 tournament will be played from February 21-26. The two-time Wimbledon and Olympics winner will be returning to Dubai for the first time since claiming the title five years ago.
  • The former World No. 1 will be competing at the tournament for the seventh time.

Ahmedabad Franchise to be Called Gujarat Titans

  • The Ahmedabad franchise of the India Premier League was named Gujarat Titans.
  • The Gujarat Titals will be led by Hardik Pandya. he was bought for Rs. 15 crore. The other players they picked in the draft are Rashid Khan (Rs. 12 crore) and Shubman Gill (Rs. 8 crore).
  • The Ahmedabad team was bought by CVC Capital Partners for Rs. 5,625 crore.
  • CVC Capital Partners is a Luxembourg-based private equity firm with interests and investments in various sports properties. The Ahmedabad team is CVC's maiden entry into IPL.

China Wins AFC Women's Asian Cup Tournament

  • China came back from two goals down to defeat South Korea 3-2 in a dramatic final and clinched their record-extending ninth title of the AFC Women's Asian Cup in Mumbai.
  • It was after a gap of 14 years that China featured in an Asian Cup final and after 16 long years of wait, they won the continental championship. In 47 years of Asian Cup history, China have been the most successful nation with nine titles but since the turn of the 2000s, other teams like North Korea, Japan and Australia grew in prominence and China somewhat fell behind.

Boys in Blue win U-19 WC

  • India defeated England by four wickets to clinch a record-extending fifth title at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua. India added the fifth title to their collection, having previously won the trophy in 2000, 2008, 2012, 2018. Yash Dhull becomes the fifth Indian captain to win the title after Mohammad Kaif, Virat Kohli, Unmukt Chand and Prithvi Shaw. Earlier, England opted to bat after winning the toss but they were shot out by India for 189 in 44.5 overs. India chases down the target of 190 with 2.2 overs to spare.
  • India's Raj Angad Bawa was announced Player of the Match of the ICC Under19 World Cup 2022 final between India and England. The Indian all-rounder picked 5/31, the best bowling figures for any final in the history of the championship and also scored crucial 35 runs with the bat to help his team in its 4 wicket win.
  • South Africa's Dewald Brevis who broke all records to score 506 runs in only six innings, the most for any batter in any Under19 World Cup ever, was named Player of the Series for his record-breaking showing.

Foundation Stone for World's Third-largest Cricket Stadium Laid in Jaipur

  • The world's third-largest cricket stadium is going to be built in Jaipur, and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly laid the foundation stone of the project virtually.
  • BCCI secretary Jay Shah also joined the event virtually. Before the foundation stone laying ceremony, Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) officials performed a 'bhoomi pujan'. This stadium is being built on the Jaipur-Delhi bypass.
  • RCA president Vaibhav Gehlot said a target has been set to complete the construction in three years. It will be the second-largest cricket stadium in India and the third-largest in the world, he said, adding that it would seat 75,000 spectators.
  • A stadium each will be built in Jodhpur and Udaipur as well, the statement said. Seven out of the 10 big stadiums in the world are in India, and this new stadium of Rajasthan will be in the third place.

Bopanna-Ramkumar Claim Tata Open

  • India's Rohan Bopanna and Ramkumar Ramanathan won their second ATP World Tour title, beating the top-seeded Australian pair Luke Saville and John-Patrick Smith in the final of the Tata Open Maharashtra.
  • The second-seeded Indians erased the first-set deficit to win 6-7(10) 6-3 10-6 in one hour and 44 minutes. It is Bopanna's 21st ATP doubles title, while for Ramkumar it is the second at this level and will push him inside the doubles top-100 for the first time.
  • In the men's singles, Joao Sousa won 7-6 (9) 4-6 6-1 over Emil Ruusuvuori.
