Spain Wins Women's Nations League

  • Spain defeated France 2-0 and won the inaugural edition of the Women's Nations League.
  • Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati and Mariona Caldentey scored a goal each for Spain in front of 32,657 fans at La Cartuja Stadium in southern Spain.
  • Spain also holds the men's Nations League title, having beaten Croatia in the final in 2023.

Neil Wagner Announces Retirement from International Cricket

  • Veteran fast bowler Neil Wagner called time on his international cricketing career, bringing an end to a distinguished 12-year Test match journey with the Black Caps.
  • Wagner represented New Zealand in 64 Tests, claiming a total of 260 wickets, placing him fifth on the nation's all-time wicket-takers list. He was renowned for his relentless bowling, often operating long and impactful spells, particularly on unresponsive surfaces. His signature short-ball deliveries proved effective, famously unsettling even the likes of Steve Smith, widely regarded as one of the best Test batsmen of the current era.
  • Wagner was an integral part of the New Zealand team that clinched the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021.

BCCI Central Contracts

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled its centrally-contracted players for this year (2024).
  • Skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli retained their place in the top bracket but the out-of-favour duo of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were excluded after ignoring the directive to play Ranji Trophy.
  • Rohit, Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja figured in the A plus category, the highest bracket of the BCCI's central contracts list.
  • The BCCI had recommended that all athletes give precedence to participating in domestic cricket during periods when they are not representing the national team.
  • Six cricketers feature in the A category, including R. Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya.
  • Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Yashasvi Jaiswal got B category contracts.
  • As many as 15 were handed C category contracts including Rinku Singh, Tilak Verma, Ruturaj Gaekwad, Shardul Thakur, Shivam Dube, Ravi Bishnoi, Jitesh Sharma, Washington Sundar, Mukesh Kumar, Sanju Samson, Arshdeep Singh, K. S. Bharat, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan and Rajat Patidar.

  • Hockey India's long-serving CEO Elena Norman resigned, ending not just a 13-year-old association with the federation but also marking the end of an era in the administration of the sport.
  • Australian Elena took charge in 2011, soon after Hockey India was formally recognised as the sport's governing body after years of administrative muddle and legal wrangling ever since the erstwhile Indian Hockey Federation was suspended. She became one of the first CEOs in Indian sports federations and was running the affairs of Hockey India.

Namibia's Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton Scores Fastest T20I Hundred off 33 Balls

  • Namibia's Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton scripted history by scoring the fastest century in T20 International (T20I) history during a bilateral match against Nepal. Achieving this monumental feat off just 33 balls, Loftie-Eaton shattered the previous record held by Nepal's Kushal Malla, who had set the benchmark at 34 balls against Mongolia during the Asian Games in 2023.

Indian Squash Player Abhay Singh Wins Goodfellow Classic Squash in Toronto

  • Indian squash player Abhay Singh clinched his eighth PSA title with a convincing 3-0 victory over Elliott Morris Devred of Wales in the final of the Goodfellow Classic, a 9000 Dollar Challenger event, in Toronto.
  • World No. 66 Abhay, won 11-7, 11-9, 11-9 in 40 minutes in what was his 12th career final for his second Challenger title of the year after triumphing at the JSW Willingdon in Mumbai.

Army Clinches Khelo India Winter Games 2024 Title on Final Day

  • The Khelo India Winter Games 2024 concluded in Gulmarg, with the Army emerging victorious after a thrilling final day of competition.
  • Alpine skier Bobby Pandey's gold medal in the parallel slalom event proved decisive, propelling Army to the top of the medal table with 10 gold medals. This narrow margin placed them one gold ahead of Karnataka (9 gold) and three ahead of Maharashtra (7 gold).
  • The Sports Authority of India (SAI) successfully managed the technical aspects of the games. Additionally, six Olympians, including Shiva Keshavan and Arif Mohammed Khan, actively contributed to the conduct of the event, lending their expertise and experience.

Centre Asks States to Fix 6 Years as Minimum Age for Class 1 Admission

  • The Centre issued a notice to all states and Union Territories to fix six years as the minimum age for admission to Class 1, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009.

Ashwin Equals and Overtakes Kumble for Different Records

  • Ravichandran Ashwin broke records during the India versus England Test series 2024 as he overtook Anil Kumble and became the highest wicket-taker in Indian conditions in the red ball format of the game. In the same game, he also equalled Kumble and became the joint-holder of the record for most five-wicket hauls by an Indian in Tests.

Deepika Bags Double Gold in India's Big Haul

  • Former world No. 1 archer Deepika Kumari returned to winning ways 14 months after embracing motherhood as she bagged two gold medals in India's rich haul of 14 medals at the Asia Cup 2024 archery stage-1 tournament in Baghdad, Iraq. India's archers dominated the field on the final day, winning all seven finals. India ended with 10 gold, three silver and one bronze medals.
