Kiren Rijiju Inaugurates Khelo India State Centre of Excellence

Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Shri Kiren Rijiju launched the Khelo India State Centre of Excellence (KISCE) at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex at Mhalunge-Balewadi in Pune. This is the 9th KISCE formally inaugurated by the Union Minister so far and the Maharashtra-based sports complex will focus on three Priority Olympic disciplines — Shooting, Athletics and Cycling.
The Khelo India State Centre of Excellence (KISCE) in Pune will be supported financially for renovation to operationalise the 25 m electronic target shooting range besides support in providing of road and track cycles. They will also be provided financial support for sports science backup, engagement of coaches, support staff, sports equipment and more. The Sports Authority of India will keep providing technical expertise and assistance on routine basis.

Robert Lewandowski Breaks 42-year-old Bundesliga Record

After already bagging most of the individual honors in 2020, Robert Lewandowski continued to impress with his rich form in the New Year. The Polish striker, who was named as the FIFA men's player of the year, broke a 42-year Bundesliga record in Bayern Munich's 2-1 victory over Freiburg.
Lewandowski took just seven minutes after kick-off to register his name on the goal sheet as he converted a pass coming from Thomas Muller, helping his side take a 1-0 lead. This was his 21st goal from 15 appearances in the ongoing season.

Nepali Climbers Successfully Complete First Winter Summit of K2

Nepalese mountaineers created history by scaling K2, the second highest peak of the world, for the first time during winter.
The group of sherpas had paused at a point 70 metres short of the 8,611 metre (28,251 foot) peak to wait for each other before climbing into the world's history books together at 4:56 pm.
Located on the Pakistan China border, K2 is the only mountain over 8,000 metres that had not been summited in the winter.
The group were named as Nirmal Purja, Gelje Sherpa, Mingma David Sherpa, Mingma G, Sona Sherpa, Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Pem Chhiri Sherpa, Dawa Temba Sherpa, Kili Pemba Sherpa, and Dawa Tenjing Sherpa.

England Great Wayne Rooney Retires

England's record goal-scorer Wayne Rooney has retired to become full-time manager at English second-tier team Derby County.
The 35-year-old former Manchester United captain, who took temporary charge of Derby in November, is now focusing on his coaching career.
Rooney scored a record 253 goals for United after moving from Everton as an 18-year-old in 2004, winning the Premier League title five times, the FA Cup once, the League Cup three times, the Champions League once and the Europa League in his last season there.
Rooney earned 120 caps for England and scored 53 goals. He also became Manchester United`s all-time highest goal scorer, a record that was also held by Charlton, when he scored his 250th goal on January 21, 2017.
Rooney retired from international football in August 2017 but returned on November 4, 2018 to play one final game for England.

Tokyo Olympics: Japan to Ban Entry of Foreign Athletes in COVID-19 Emergency

Japan will temporarily suspend exemptions allowing foreign athletes to train in the country ahead of the Summer Olympics, as it closes its borders to contain a surge in COVID-19 cases just six months before the Games.
The suspension will last until February 7, the scheduled end of the coronavirus state of emergency in the capital.
Japan is grappling with record surges in coronavirus infections, prompting the government to tighten border controls and expand its state of emergency to cover more than half of the country's population.

Sophie Devine Scores the fastest-ever Century in the History of Women's T20 Cricket

New Zealand's Sophie Devine returned scored the fastest-ever century in the history of women's T20 cricket for Wellington Blaze as they beat the Otago Sparks in the Super Smash. The White Ferns captain only left managed isolation after a 14-day stay upon returning from Australia, but showed no signs of rust as she powered her side to a 10-wicket win at University of Otago Oval.
Devine brought up her century off just 36 balls, beating West Indies batter Deandra Dottin's previous record of 38 balls, set in an international against South Africa in 2010. She hit nine fours and nine sixes during her innings, and one of her shots that cleared the boundary grazed a girl watching on from the bank.
