BCCI Not to Hold Ranji Trophy for First Time in 87 Years

The BCCI will not be conducting its premier first-class domestic tournament Ranji Trophy for the first time in 87 years as the parent body opted for the Vijay Hazare Trophy as per the wishes of a majority of the state units.
- The BCCI will also host the U-19 National One Day tournament for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy and the Women's national 50-over tournament as per a letter sent by BCCI secretary Jay Shah to the state units.
- While BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Shah were keen to have the blue riband tournament that pays the maximum match fee (Rs 1.5 lakh per game approx) to the players, it is understood that a two-month-long bio-bubble even for a truncated two-phased Ranji Trophy in times of the COVID-19 pandemic wasn't feasible.

P. V. Sindhu Loses in World Tour Finals Opener

World champion shuttler P. V. Sindhu went down fighting against world number one Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan in the opening Group 'B' women's singles match of the USD 1.5 million HSBC BWF World Tour Finals in Bangkok.
A week after a demoralising defeat at the Toyota Thailand Open quarter finals, Sindhu produced a much improved performance but still lost to Tzu Ying 21-19 12-21 17-21 in a 59-minute match. It was Sindhu's 16th defeat to Tzu Ying in 21 meetings.
Olympic silver medallist Sindhu, who had won the prestigious title in 2018, will next play home favourites Ratchanok Intanon, who had handed her a humiliating defeat last week.

Abu Dhabi T10 Begins

Abu Dhabi T10 is the world's only ten-over cricket tournament officially sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
It is the first-ever internationally approved ten-over format competition. The second edition of Abu Dhabi T10 will be held from 28th January – 6th February 2021.
Matches have a 10-over-a-side format and duration of 45 minutes a side totalling 90 minutes of play. The tournament is played over ten days, with a round-robin followed by semi-finals and the final.

Florida Offers to Replace Tokyo as Olympics Host

Florida's chief financial officer has asked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to consider relocating the 2021 Games to the Sunshine State amid speculation that Tokyo organisers may back out as hosts due to concerns about the COVID-19 outbreak.
Tokyo organisers have vowed to press ahead with the re-scheduled Games, which are due to open on July 23 after being postponed for a year because of the novel coronavirus, but Florida's Jimmy Patronis has offered an alternative option.
There is still time to deploy a site selection team to Florida to meet with statewide and local officials on holding the Olympics in the Sunshine State.

Olympic Shot Put Champion Ryan Crouser Sets World Record

Olympic shot put champion Ryan Crouser of the United States set a world indoor record of 22.82 metres at the American Track League series opener in Fayetteville, AR.
Crouser, who won the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, on his opening attempt, bettered the 32-year-old mark of 22.66m set by American Randy Barnes in 1989. The 28-year-old also bettered the old world record on his third attempt with an effort of 22.70m.
Crouser finished off the meet with a throw of 22.48m, his third-best of the day, but still a mark that only two other men have ever bettered indoors.

ITBP wins IHAI National Ice Hockey Championship

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has won the Ice Hockey Association of India (IHAI) 10th National Ice Hockey Championship trophy after a win over Ladakh in the finals in Gulmarg. The match was held at Gulmarg Ice Rink. Ladakh has been considered as the capital of ice hockey in India where local men and women play this game with great enthusiasm.
The championship was held at an altitude of 8,694-feet and temperatures below freezing point. The Top eight teams of ice hockey in India participated in the event. Top teams of Ice Hockey in India participated in the Championship organized from January 16 to 22, 2021.
