Shikhar Dhawan to Lead India at Asian Games 2023

  • As per reports, Shikhar Dhawan likely to lead the Indian cricket team at Asian Games 2023 and VVS Laxman to be the coach. During Rohit Sharma's absence last year (2022), it was Shikhar Dhawan - fondly called as Gabbar Singh - who assumed the captaincy duties for the team.
  • China is set to host the 19th edition of the Asian Games, marking its third time as the host nation. The capital city of Beijing previously hosted the Games in 1990, while Guangzhou, another prominent Chinese city, had the honour of hosting the prestigious event in 2010.

Wozniacki, Former World No. 1, Announces Return to Tennis

  • Caroline Wozniacki is set to make a comeback to tennis after the former world number one said that she was ready to return to the Tour having retired from the sport in 2020 to start a family.
  • Danish player Wozniacki spent 71 weeks at the top of the world rankings and finished with 30 singles titles - including a Grand Slam crown at the Australian Open in 2018.
  • Wozniacki said she would first play at the Canadian Open in Montreal in August to get back into the groove before targeting the U.S. Open while her long-term goal is the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Indian Men's Football Team Climbs up to 100th Rank on FIFA World Rankings

  • The Indian men's national football team climbed further in the latest FIFA World Rankings, rising from 101 to 100, surpassing Lebanon and New Zealand.
  • This is the first time the Blue Tigers made it to the top 100 of the global rankings and since December 20, 2018 when they were 99th. And for head coach Igor Stimac, it is another feather in the cap.
  • The top 10 teams in the latest rankings are: Argentina, France, Brazil, England, Belgium, Croatia, Netherlands, Italy, Portugal and Spain.

Jhulan Goswami, Heather Knight, Eoin Morgan Join MCC World Cricket Committee

  • The MCC World Cricket Committee (WCC) expanded its ranks by welcoming three new members: English players Heather Knight and Eoin Morgan, as well as legendary Indian cricketer Jhulan Goswami. At the same time, former England captain Alastair Cook stepped down from the Committee to focus on his playing career. With these new additions, the WCC now consists of 14 members, comprising current and former international cricket players, umpires, and officials from around the world. The WCC operates autonomously and serves as an influential organisation within the cricketing community.
  • Jhulan Goswami, renowned for her skills as a fast bowler in women's cricket, retired from international professional cricket in 2022. Her final match was an ODI against England at Lord's, where she received a guard of honour. Throughout her impressive two-decade-long career, Goswami took over 300 wickets in white-ball cricket across 272 appearances and secured 44 wickets in 12 Test matches.
  • Heather Knight has been leading the England cricket team since 2016. Under her captaincy, England won the ICC Women's World Cup at Lord's in 2017, just a year after she took over.
  • Eoin Morgan, one of England's greatest run-scorers in ODI cricket, has amassed just under 7,000 runs in his career. He captained the English team to their historic victory in the ICC Men's World Cup in 2019, which culminated in an unforgettable final against New Zealand.

Elorda Cup: Indian Boxer Sumit Beats Tangatar; Advances to Semi-finals

  • Indian boxer Sumit secured a resounding victory to confirm the bronze medal in the 86 kg category on the second day of Elorda Cup in Astana, Kazakhstan.
  • Sumit dominated his quarter-final bout against Bekzat Tangatar of Kazakhstan from the go and showcased his power and precision to win 5-0 in a one-sided affair.
  • In the 51 kg pre-quarterfinal bout, Zoram Muana displayed his prowess to emerge victorious in 4-1 split verdict against Daryan Kulzhabayev of Kazakhstan.

India Ends Special Olympics 2023 Campaign with 202 Medals

  • India ended its Special Olympics World Games 2023 campaign by winning 202 medals (76 gold, 75 silver and 51 bronze), with the last of the medals coming from the athletics track.
  • Speaking about the Indian contingent's performance at the Berlin Games, Chairperson Special Olympics Bharat, Mallika Nada highlighted not only their performance but also the need for inclusion and acceptance of these athletes by the mainstream.

Khandker is Head Coach of Junior Women's Hockey Team

  • Hockey India appointed former skipper Tushar Khandker as head coach of the junior women's hockey national team. Khandker replaced Harvinder Singh, who was named coach on an interim basis after Eric Wonink left the position in January 2023.
  • A deputy of senior women's team chief coach Janneke Schopman, Khandker has developed a strong portfolio as a coach over the last decade. Between 2014 and 2016, he was part of the Indian men's team in the capacity of a coach when the team won the Champions Trophy silver medal in London, a gold medal at the Asian Champions Trophy, and a bronze at the World Hockey League. He was also part of the Indian coaching staff at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
