Asian Games 2023: Gymnast Dipa Karmakar Makes Cut

  • Star India gymnast Dipa Karmakar sealed her place in the Asian Games squad after topping the selection trials at the Kalinga Stadium, in Bhubaneswar. The Tripura gymnast, who narrowly missed out on a bronze in 2016 Rio Olympics, made a comeback after 21 months of suspension due to a doping violation. Dipa scored 47.05 to emerge on top in the all-around event during the trials.
  • Pranati Das and Pranati Nayak scored 45.80 and 44.43 to finish second and third in the trials.
  • In men's Senior Individual category, Yogeshwar Singh (76.30) from Haryana, Odisha's Rakesh Patra (76.20) and Tapan Mohanty (74.60) bagged the top three spots.

Commonwealth Championship: Todkar Wins Lifting Gold

  • Shubham Todkar clinched the 61 kg gold but he wasn't the best lifter in the category as compatriot Sidhanta Gogoi, competing in the junior competition, out-performed him at the Commonwealth Championships.
  • Shubham, who is in the Indian squad for the upcoming World Championships, heaved a total of 259 kg (115 kg+144 kg), while Sidhanta had a best effort of 260 kg (112 kg+148 kg) to be crowned the junior champion.
  • The senior, junior and youth events are being held simultaneously at the Gautam Buddha University, Uttar Pradesh.

Anurag Singh Thakur Unveils Trophy of 'Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023'

  • Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur unveiled the trophy of 'Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023' for men's Hockey at Major Dhyanchand National Stadium in New Delhi. On the occasion, he also launched the 'Pass the Ball Trophy Tour' Campaign in the presence of prominent hockey players of the country.
  • India has won the Asian Trophy three times so far.
  • Travelling from Delhi, the trophy will reach Chennai in Tamil Nadu on the 20th of July. The hockey tournament will begin on the 3rd of August and continue till the 12th of August. Six countries including India, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Pakistan, and China will vie for the title.

Para Javelin Thrower Antil Breaks World Record (15)

  • Indian Paralympic gold medallist Sumit Antil scripted a world record in F64 javelin throw with a best attempt of 70.83 m at the World Para-Athletics Championship in Paris.
  • Antil bettered his own record of 70.17 m he had registered at the Indian Open National Para Athletics Championships in May 2022.
  • Antil had won gold in the men's javelin F64/44 final with a world record throw of 68.55 m at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. He also became the fourth Indian to grab a quota for the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

India's Top Table Tennis League UTT Tournament Kicks off in Pune

  • India's top table tennis league Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) tournament is being held at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Pune this year (2023) under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India after a gap of four years. The league round-robin is being held between July 13 and 27, 2023. The semi-finals will be held on July 28 and 29 and the final will be held on the July 30.
  • The Ultimate Table Tennis league consists of six teams. There are 36 players in total with six from each team - four Indian players and two International players. Each team will play five matches. India's ace table tennis player Sharath Kamal is participating in the UTT league. He will lead the Indian team to the 26th Asian Championships to be held from September3 to 10, 2023 in South Korea.

ICC Announces Equal Prize Money for Men and Women at its Global Events

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced equal prize money for men's and women's teams at ICC events. The decision was taken at the ICC Annual Conference in Durban, South Africa and ensures the ICC Board fulfilled its commitment to reaching prize money equity by 2030 well ahead of schedule. Teams will now receive equal prize money for the equivalent finishing position at comparable events as well as the same amount for winning a match at those events.
  • ICC Chair Greg Barclay said that this is a significant moment in the history of the sport and he was delighted that men's and women's cricketers competing at ICC global events will now be rewarded equally.

India's Nishad Kumar Wins Silver at Para Athletics World Championships 2023

  • Indian Paralympian and high jumper Nishad Kumar won a silver medal at the ongoing World Para Athletics Championships in Paris.
  • Nishad won the silver medal with his sixth and final attempt in the event with a 2.09m leap.
  • Townsend of the USA won the gold medal, while Wise won the bronze medal.
  • Nishad, who won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, was second till the fifth round after he successfully attempted a jump of 2.07m. He further strengthened his case with an improved leap in the final attempt to secure a Paris 2024 spot.

Asian Championships: Abhishek Pal Walks Away with Bronze

  • Abhishek Pal opened India's medal account in the Asian Athletics Championships, Bangkok, Thailand with a bronze in the 10,000 metres race walk.
  • Pal from the Indian Army clocked 29 minutes, 33.26 seconds to finish behind Ren Tazawa (29.18.44) of Japan and Koech Kimutai Shadrack (29:31.63) of Kazakhstan.
  • Pal and compatriot Gulveer Singh stayed behind the leading walkers for almost the entire race. Pal, however, pushed hard in the last lap and overtook a tiring Yuto Imae of Japan to cross the finish line in third place.

Wanindu Hasaranga, Ashleigh Gardner WinsICC 'Player of the Month' Award

  • Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and Australian women's team all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner were named ICC's 'Player of the Month' for their impressive performances in June.
  • Hasaranga clinched the award following his record-breaking feats at the World Cup Qualifier games in Zimbabwe.
  • Women's Ashes hero Ashleigh Gardner becomes the first player to win three Player-of-the-Month accolades.
  • Both players were selected as the standout performers following a vote conducted among a specialist panel comprising ICC Hall of Famers, former international players, media representatives and global cricket fans registered at icc-cricket.com, who had been voting since the nominees were announced.

England Wins Under-21 Euro Final

  • England emerged victorious in the Under-21 European Championship final against Spain in Georgia, securing their first title since 1984. Curtis Jones' decisive goal propelled England to a 1-0 triumph, while James Trafford's heroic penalty save in the 99th minute preserved England's flawless defensive record throughout the tournament. This victory adds to England's recent successes at various youth levels, cementing their reputation as a powerhouse in developing young talent.
  • England's victory in the Under-21 European Championship final against Spain ended their 39-year wait for a third UEFA European Under-21 Championship title.

OCA Elects Sheikh Talal as the New President

  • Kuwait's Sheikh Talal Fahad Al Ahmad Al Sabah was elected as the new President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) following a vote overshadowed by allegations of corruption. Sheikh Talal replaced his older brother Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, who led the OCA for 30 years until 2021 when he was forced to step down after being found guilty of forgery in a court in Geneva and sentenced to at least 13 months in prison.
  • Sheikh Talal beat Kuwaiti Husain Al-Musallam, the organisation's Director General and President of World Aquatics, at the OCA General Assembly in Bangkok by 24 votes to 20.
  • The OCA was founded in 1982 by his father Fahad Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who led it until 1990 when he was killed defending Dasman Palace on the first day of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is a governing body of sports in Asia, currently with 45 member National Olympic Committees.
  • Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) was established in New Delhi on November 16, 1982. The International Olympic Committee recognized the OCA within the same year.

AFI Awarded Best Member Federation by Asian Athletics Association

  • Athletics Federation of India (AFI) was conferred with the best member federation award by the Asian Athletics Association in Bangkok.
  • AFI president Adille Sumariwalla received the award during the function hosted by Asian Athletics Association.
