India Announce New Captain for T20Is as they Name Squad for Sri Lanka Series

  • India named Suryakumar Yadav as the captain of their men's T20I team for the tour of Sri Lanka with Shubman Gill named as the vice-captain of the T20I and ODI sides.
  • The middle-order batter, who has played 68 T20Is, led the team against Australia and South Africa last year (2023) in the absence of key players, but has now been handed the reins of the team in the shortest format.

AIFF awards 2024, Chhangte, Indumathi Win Top Male and Female Awards

  • The All India Football Federation (AIFF) held its annual awards ceremony, recognising outstanding achievements in Indian football for the 2023-24 season. The top honours went to Lallianzuala Chhangte and Indumathi Kathiresan, who were named the male and female Players of the Year, respectively.
  • Lallianzuala Chhangte, from Mumbai City FC, secured the AIFF Men's Player of the Year award for the second consecutive time. This achievement makes him only the fifth player to win the award multiple times. Chhangte's exceptional performance included:
  • Scoring 11 goals and providing 7 assists in all competitions for Mumbai City FC
  • Being the highest-scoring Indian in the Indian Super League (ISL)

Latest FIFA Rankings Released, India remains 124th

  • India has maintained its 124th position in the latest FIFA men's rankings released. This comes as a small relief for the success-starved nation, which has been experiencing a downward trend in recent months.
  • The Indian men's national football team faced setbacks in June when it dropped three places in the FIFA rankings. This decline was primarily due to their failure to qualify for the third round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, suffering losses to Qatar and Afghanistan.
  • India had achieved a significant milestone last year by breaking into the top 100, reaching its best-ever ranking of 99. However, since December, the team has been on a downward spiral.

Six Associate Nations Honored as ICC Announces Development Award Winners

  •  The International Cricket Association acknowledged the associate nations for their transformative work in the cricket world.
  • Six nations have been honoured with the ICC Development Award winners for 2023. The ICC awarded the Associate Members for their range of leading initiatives as they claimed the honour. Mexico, Oman, Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, Nepal and Scotland received honours across six categories.
  • The winners were selected from a 21-nation shortlist by the ICC Development Awards Panel. The ICC Development Awards were launched in 2002 and shed light on the world-leading work being carried out in the ICC Associate Member countries. Indian Teenager Aarav Dengla Wins Oldest French Chess Tournament

  • Indian teenager Aarav Dengla won the 2024 Grand Paris Masters Championship, the oldest French chess tournament. The tournament was conducted outside the capital city for the first time due to the upcoming Olympic Games.
  • Held at the Blanche de Castille High School in Villemomble outside Paris, the Masters chess event had 250 players in contention for the coveted title. The 15-year-old Dengla took the spotlight in the Masters tournament.

Thomas Muller Retires from International Football

  • Germany's Thomas Muller announced that he was officially retiring from international football.
  • Muller, whose international career spanned 14 years, had taken part in Euro 2024 but could not go all the way as hosts Germany was knocked out by eventual champions Spain in the quarter-final.
  • Muller helped Germany win the 2014 World Cup and has the third most appearances for the national team with 131 caps and 45 goals. He also won the Golden Boot and Young Player Award during the 2010 World Cup, when Germany finished third.

Five US Women Feature in Top 15 in the World for First Time in Two Decades

  • Five players from the United States ranked in the Women's Tennis Association's top 15 for the first time in two decades, as per United States Tennis Association (USTA). World number two Coco Gauff led the American charge followed by sixth-ranked Jessica Pegula and Danielle Collins, who climbed two spots to ninth on the list amid a remarkable farewell season.
  • Madison Keys was ranked 14th while Emma Navarro hopped two spots to a career-high 15th after reaching her first major quarter-final at Wimbledon. The last time five American women featured in the top 15 was May 24, 2004, when Lindsay Davenport was fourth in the world.
