  • Simone Biles won the fifth Olympic gold of her legendary career as she led the United States to an emphatic victory in the women's gymnastics team final, as Daniel Wiffen made Irish history in swimming.
  • Wiffen was in tears on the podium at La Defense Arena after becoming the first Irishman ever to win an Olympic swimming gold.
  • He powered home in the 800m freestyle in 7min 38.19sec, the fifth-fastest time ever, ahead of American defending champion Bobby Finke and Tokyo silver medallist Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy.

  • North Korea won its first Olympic medal in eight years in Paris but had to settle for silver after defeat in mixed-doubles to table tennis superpower China.
  • China arrived in Paris as the world's undisputed table tennis kings, having won 32 of the 37 available gold since it became an Olympic sport.

BFI Sets Up the National Basketball Academy in Collaboration with CAA

  • The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) set up the National basketball academy in collaboration with Corvuss American Academy in Mumbai. For a start, the Academy will run with 30 boys and 30 girls from the school. There will be a nationwide hunt for talent to select 30 boys and 30 girls for the academy.
  • These players will be under the guidance of a competent foreign coach. The partner institution will provide a comprehensive academic program, nutritional support, sports counselling, training and access to world class facilities for the trainees. The players in the academy will be free to represent their States in the State and national championships.

Manu Bhaker-Sarabjot Singh Win Second Medal for India with 10 m air Pistol Team Bronze

  • India won their second medal at the ongoing Paris Olympics as shooters Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh clinched the bronze in the 10m Air Pistol mixed team event.
  • The Indian duo edged South Korea's Wonho Lee and Jin Ye Oh 16-10 to record India's second medal of the Games, following Bhaker's bronze in the women's 10m air pistol.
  • Manu Bhaker thus became the first shooter from India to win two Olympic medals, and the first Indian athlete in history to win two medals at the same Olympic Games.
  • Sarabjot Singh is now the sixth shooter from India to win a medal at the Olympics. His partner Manu Bhaker had become the fifth Indian shooter to win an Olympics medal earlier.

Indian Tennis Legend Rohan Bopanna Retires After Paris 2024 Olympics Exit

  • Rohan Bopanna, one of India's most accomplished tennis players, announced his retirement from representing India in international competitions following his exit from the Paris 2024 Olympics. This marks the end of an era for Indian tennis, as Bopanna has been a stalwart for the country for over two decades.
  • Bopanna's Olympic journey came to an end in the men's doubles first round, where he partnered with N. Sriram Balaji. The Indian duo faced a formidable French pair, Gael Monfils and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, ultimately succumbing to a 7-5, 6-2 defeat. While the result may not have been what Bopanna hoped for, it serves as a poignant bookend to his illustrious career representing India.
  • Recognised globally for their campaign "Stop War Start Tennis", Bopanna was awarded the renowned Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year award in 2010, along with Qureshi. The duo were also voted winners of the Peace and Sport's Image of the Year award by their fans. He was also awarded the Ekalavya Award by the Government of Karnataka in 2005 for his achievements on court.
  • He was a recipient of the Arjuna Award, the second highest sporting honour of India in 2019. His name was announced among the awardees of the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India, for the year 2024.

Manika Batra Become First Indian to Reach Rd16 in Singles at Olympics

  • India's table tennis sensation Manika Batra twiddled and tapped her way into the history books with a straight game 4-0 (11-9, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7) win over home favourite Prithika Pavade in their Round of 32 table tennis clash in women's singles event at the Olympics.
  • In doing so, the paddler from Delhi created history by becoming the first Indian to reach the Round of 16 in singles at the Olympics. The 29-year-old Manika, ranked 28th in the world, was not only playing a higher-ranked Prithika, who's currently at her career-best ranking of World No. 18, but also against the boisterous French crowd who were naturally supporting the home athlete.

India to Host 2025 Men's Asia Cup in T20 Format

  • The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced that India will host the next edition of the Men's Asia Cup cricket tournament in 2025. This significant event will be played in the T20 format, serving as a precursor to the T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in India in 2026.
  • Since 2016, the Asia Cup has adopted a strategic approach of aligning its format with the upcoming World Cup. This means that the tournament is played in the same format (T20 or ODI) as the World Cup that follows, providing teams with valuable practice in the relevant format.

Chennai to Host Country's First Street Circuit Race at Night

  • The southern Indian metropolis of Chennai will be hosting what is being dubbed India's first night street race. The car racing event will take place from August 30 to September 1, along a 3.5-kilometre stretch, part of which lies along the city's scenic Marina Beach Road and adjoining arterial roads. The Chennai night race is being supported by the Tamil Nadu government.
  • According to the event hosts, the race will be on the lines of night races being held in Singapore and Saudi Arabia.

Women's Asia Cup Cricket: India Enters 9th Final

  • Pacer Renuka Singh's three-wicket burst followed by Smriti Mandhana's brisk unbeaten fifty underlined India's ruthless performance as the defending champions walloped Bangladesh by 10 wickets and marched into their record-extending ninth women's Asia Cup final.
