Wasim Jaffer Set to Become Punjab Kings New Head Coach

  • Wasim Jaffer will be Punjab Kings' next head coach, succeeding Trevor Bayliss, whose two-year contract ended.
  • This will be Jaffer's third stint with the Punjab Kings. Ahead of the IPL 2024, Jaffer was released from the role of batting consultant.
  • Jaffer was the batting coach of Punjab Kings between 2019-2021 but stepped down from his role before the IPL 2022 auction. However, he will again be back in the Punjab dugout for the upcoming season.
  • Jaffer, who has played 31 Tests for India will be an uphill task for Jaffer as Punjab Kings, one of the eight founding member of the IPL have failed to make it to the playoffs for ten straight season, since the 2014 edition, where they made their only appearance in the IPL final.

France Set To Host 2030 Winter Olympics, Subject To Conditions

  • The International Olympic Committee named the French Alps as the host for the 2030 Winter Games. While presenting the bid to IOC members in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron assured the committee that the government formed after the 2024 Summer Games in Paris would handle all outstanding organisational and financial guarantees.
  • IOC members accepted his guarantees and voted their approval. The French bid, the IOC's sole candidate with exclusive negotiating rights since November, centred on ski resorts in the French Alps and ice sports venues in the coastal city of Nice. National governments in Olympic host countries need to formally underwrite financial and security promises that are essential to organise and run the Games.

Paris Olympics 2024: Elena Rybakina Withdraws from Both Singles and Mixed Events

  • The Olympic tennis competition suffered another blow as women's third seed Elena Rybakina joined a lengthy list of non-starters hours after the draw took place at Roland Garros. The big-serving 25-year-old Kazakh was down to face Romania's Jaqueline Cristian in the first round of the singles. Organisers confirmed she had pulled out and would also not compete in the mixed doubles alongside compatriot Alexander Bublik. No reason was stated for her decision.
  • Rybakina's withdrawal means that France's Caroline Garcia moves into her spot in the draw as the 17th seed while Australia's Daria Saville enters the draw as an alternate. With the action to begin on Saturday, the flurry of high-profile withdrawals has cast something of a cloud over the tournament being staged on the famous Parisian clay.

Top-ranked Jannik Sinner Withdraws from Paris Olympics Tennis Competition

  • Top-ranked Jannik Sinner pulled out of the Paris Olympics due to medical reasons.
  • Sinner won the Australian Open in January 2024 for his first Grand Slam title and moved to No. 1 in the ATP rankings last month (June 2024) after reaching the French Open semi-finals.

Nita Ambani Secures Second Term as International Olympic Committee Member

  • Nita Ambani, founder of Reliance Foundation, was re-elected unanimously to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for a second term. The announcement came just days before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.
  • Ambani, the first Indian woman to join the IOC in 2016, expressed her gratitude for the renewed trust placed in her.
  • IOC President Thomas Bach congratulated Ambani and other re-elected members of the committee.
  • The International Olympic Committee is a non-governmental sports organisation based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
  • Founded in 1894 by Pierre de Coubertin and Demetrios Vikelas, it is the authority responsible for organising the modern (Summer, Winter, and Youth) Olympic Games.

IndusInd Bank Partners With Inspire Institute Of Sport

  • IndusInd Bank announced the launch of 'Wrestle for Glory' program, a CSR initiative of the Bank, continuing the longstanding collaboration with the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS). This is a high performance Olympic training facility, headquartered in Vijayanagar, Bellary.
  • The 'Wrestle for Glory' program was launched as a part of the 'IndusInd For Sports' initiative, a non-banking sports vertical of the Bank, established in 2016. 'IndusInd For Sports' drives on the philosophy of diversity, differentiation and domination through its initiatives that aim at exciting, educating and engaging the stakeholders using sports.
  • This program aims to empower 50 talented female wrestling athletes from across the country and provide them with coaching at the esteemed IIS facility on fully-funded scholarships. Through its CSR initiatives focused on sports programs, the Bank prioritises both inclusivity and sporting excellence and emphasizes the participation of individuals from diverse backgrounds, including different genders, persons with disabilities, and underprivileged communities.

Kush Maini Secures First Formula 2 Win in Hungary

  • Kush Maini achieved his first-ever Formula 2 win at the Hungarian Grand Prix after Richard Verschoor, the original sprint race winner, was disqualified due to a technical infringement. This victory marks Maini's fifth podium of the season, placing him eighth in the championship standings, just three points behind Dennis Hauger.

Harmanpreet Kaur Surpasses Smriti Mandhana to Become India's Highest T20I Run-Getter

  • Harmanpreet Kaur became the top run-scorer in women's T20I cricket for India, overtaking Smriti Mandhana. This milestone was achieved during India's Women's Asia Cup T20 match against the UAE in Dambulla. The UAE won the toss and chose to bowl first, Smrit Mandhana getting out on 13 runs.
  • Shafali Verma played aggressively, scoring 37 runs off 18 balls before being dismissed. Harmanpreet Kaur came in needing only 30 runs to surpass Smriti's record of 3,378 runs.
  • The Indian captain played brilliantly, scoring a quickfire 66 off 47 balls, including seven fours and a six.

Ajinkya Naik Becomes Mumbai Cricket Association Youngest-ever President

  • Ajinkya Naik, at 37, became the youngest president of Mumbai Cricket Association after defeating Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar's candidate Sanjay Naik by 107 votes in a one-sided election.
  • Ajinkya was serving as the secretary of the association under Amole Kale's. The MCA had to call for an election for the president post after Kale's demise in June.
  • Although Ajinkya fought for the post without any politician officially backing him, he admitted that behind the scenes, 'unseen powers' helped him in becoming the youngest president in MCA's history.

Manolo Marquez Appointed Head Coach of Indian Men's Football Team

  • The All India Football Federation (AIFF) appointed Indian Super League (ISL) Trophy winning coach Manolo Marquez as the head coach of the Indian men's team. He succeeded Igor Stimac.
  • Marquez is currently the head coach of ISL side FC Goa, which he joined in 2023, and will continue his role at the club till 2025, while also shouldering the responsibility of the National team.

P. R. Sreejesh Announces Retirement after Paris Olympics 2024

  • Indian hockey goalkeeper P. R. Sreejesh, a pivotal figure in the sport, announced that he will retire from international hockey following the Paris Olympics 2024. This decision marks the end of an illustrious career, characterised by significant achievements and a lasting impact on the team.
  • Sreejesh, who debuted internationally in 2006, has played a crucial role in Indian hockey's resurgence. His career has seen highs and lows, including the team's failure to qualify for the Beijing 2008 Olympics and a disappointing finish in London 2012. However, his leadership and perseverance were instrumental in India's impressive performances at subsequent events. Sreejesh captained the team in Rio 2016 and played a key role in securing a bronze medal at Tokyo 2021.

ICC Forms 3-member Committee to Review Conduct of T20 World Cup

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) formed a three-member committee to "review the delivery" of the T20 World Cup which was co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies last month (June 2024).
  • The committee features former New Zealand batter Roger Twose and two other directors Lawson Naidoo and Imran Khwaja, who is the deputy chair of the ICC.
  • The ICC Board confirmed that there will be a review into the delivery of the ICC T20 World Cup. This will be overseen by three directors, Roger Twose, Lawson Naidoo and Imran Khwaja who will report back to the Board later in the year.
  • It is understood that ICC incurred losses in excess of USD 20 million for conducting matches in New York, Florida and Dallas.
  • It is learnt that the allocated budget for the US leg of the tournament was around USD 150 million and it was found that the budget had overshot by a fair distance which was red-flagged by certain influential board members of the global body.

Abhinav Bindra Awarded Prestigious Olympic Order by IOC

  • Olympic gold medal winning shooter Abhinav Bindra was awarded with Olympic Order by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
  • The award which was presented to Bindra for his outstanding services to the Olympic Movement, will be officially handed over to him during the 142nd IOC Session in Paris on August 10, a day before the closing of the Paris Olympics.

Mansukh Mandaviya Launches the Second Phase of the KIRTI Project

  • Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched the second phase of the KIRTI project with an aim to identify one lakh young athletes within 100 days, for support. He felt the nationwide talent hunt under Khelo India Rising Talent Identification (KIRTI) will prove to be a stepping stone to making India one of the top five nations in the Olympic Games by 2047.
  • He mentioned that, under the KIRTI programme, everyone will be given opportunities to develop their sports skills, whether they live in a village or a city, and whether they come from a poor background or otherwise.
  • KIRTI's talent identification model has been scientifically planned using IT tools and global best practices. The KIRTI program aims to bridge this gap and provide direction to young budding athletes to choose a career path based on their abilities.

Biju Patnaik Sports Award Not Renamed

  • The sports and youth services department in a notification on July 19 said that the 'Biju Patnaik Sports Award' that was instituted in 2001-02 has been renamed as 'Odisha Rajya Krida Samman'
  • Two days after the Odisha sports and youth services department renamed the state's premier sports award given for lifetime achievement, as well as outstanding performance after Biju Patnaik, CM Mohan Majhi on July 21, clarified that no decision has been taken on renaming the name of 'Biju Patnaik Sports Award'.

Leander Paes, Vijay Amritraj Create History by Joining International Tennis Hall of Fame

  • Former doubles world number one Leander Paes and tennis broadcaster, actor and player Vijay Amritraj became the first Asian men inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
  • The first inductees from India were joined by British tennis journalist and author Richard Evans in enshrinement ceremonies at the Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.

India Women vs UAE Women, Asia Cup: India Posts Record Total

  • India women created history with their first ever 200-plus total in a T20I game. Harmanpreet Kaur-led team finished at 201/5 against UAE Women in the ongoing Asia Cup and registered a thumping 78-run victory.
  • India's previous highest score in women T20I was 198/4 against England in 2018. This is also India's highest total in Women's Asia Cup history - going past their own best of 181/4 against Malaysia in 2022.
