Friday was Britain’s first ever working day without coal power since the Industrial Revolution.
As per reports, it is the first continuous 24-hour coal-free period for Britain since use of the fossil fuel began. West Burton 1 power station, the only coal-fired plant that had been up and running went offline on Thursday.
The UK has had shorter coal-free periods in 2016. The longest continuous period until now had been 19 hours.
Britain’s last coal power station will be forced to close in 2025.

New Species of Herbivores Dinosaurs Discovered
Scientists have discovered a new species of herbivorous dinosaur that lived about 125 million years ago has been discovered.
The new species belongs to a group of herbivores known as sauropods, which includes giants such as Brontosaurus and Brachiosaurus, who had long necks and pillar-like legs.

UK Birds Face Extinction Risk or Steep Decline
According to a new report on the state of the UK’s birds, more than a quarter of UK birds, including the puffin, nightingale and curlew, require urgent conservation efforts to ensure their survival.
Since the last review in 2009, an additional 15 species of bird have been placed on the “red list”, a category that indicates a species is in danger of extinction or that has experienced significant decline in population or habitat in recent years.
The total number of species on the red list is now 67 out of a total of 247.

World's Largest Coral System Damaged
According to scientists, two consecutive years of coral bleaching has damaged two-thirds of Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
Aerial surveys showed that bleaching has affected about 1,500 km (900 miles) stretch of the reef.
In 2016, the bleaching, caused by a rise in water temperatures and the El Nino effects, damaged the northern third of the Reef, situated off the northeastern coast of Australia, while now the middle third has suffered the most severe bleaching in less than a year.
This year, 2017, we are seeing mass bleaching, even without the assistance of El Nino conditions.

Ancient Palace Compound in Mexico
A palace complex believed to be the home and business centre for the ruler of an ancient empire dating back to over 2,000 years has been discovered in Mexico.
The palace is well preserved and covered about 2,790 square metres.
The Oaxaca Valley near the southern tip of Mexico has been offering clues of past civilisations for several decades.
