Great Barrier Reef

  • According to scientists, coral bleaching on Australia`s Great Barrier Reef is even worse than first thought. The impact will accelerate unless global greenhouse gas emissions are cut.
  • Initial aerial and in-water surveys confirmed that about 29% of shallow water corals died from bleaching during 2016, up from the previous estimate of 22%, with the reef currently experiencing an unprecedented second straight year of bleaching.
  • The 2,300 km World Heritage-listed reef suffered its most severe bleaching on record last year due to warming sea temperatures during March and April.

  • Scientists have discovered a new species of see-through frog and warned that the amphibian may already be at threat of extinction.
  • The frog (Hyalinobatrachium yaku), has unique physical and behavioural traits.

New Layer of Tectonic Plates

  • Scientists have discovered what appears to be a new, extra layer of tectonic plates in Earth's mantle. This research may help in explaining the reason behind mysterious series of earthquakes in the Pacific.
  • The newly discovered plates slid horizontally inside a water-rich layer of the mantle known as the “transition zone,” which lies 440-660 km below the surface.

World's Most Endangered Marine Mammal

  • In an alarming study, the world's most endangered marine mammal vaquita porpoise may go extinct by 2018 if they are not saved.
  • Listed as the most endangered cetacean in the world these mammals are often accidentally killed in gillnets which were banned for two years in 2015.
  • WWF has recommended an immediate, permanent ban on gillnets and remove and destroy ghost nets, to prevent the vaquita and other marine species from being caught.

NASA's Global Temperature Analysis

  • A monthly tally of global temperatures conducted by NASA concluded that the month of April 2017 was the second hottest April on record in 137 years of modern record-keeping.
  • April 2016 was the hottest on record, at 1.06 degrees Celsius warmer than the April mean temperature. Last month was 0.88 degrees Celsius warmer than the mean April temperature from 1951-1980.
