Mysterious Floating Hills on Pluto

  • The New Horizons mission scientists have revealed yet another stunning feature - floating hills - of the icy planet Pluto.
  • According to data from NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft, the nitrogen ice glaciers on Pluto appear to carry an intriguing cargo: numerous, isolated hills that may be fragments of water ice from Pluto’s surrounding uplands.
  • Measuring about one to several miles or kilometers across, the hills, which are in the vast ice plain informally named Sputnik Planum within Pluto’s ‘heart,’ are likely miniature versions of the larger, jumbled mountains on Sputnik Planum’s western border.

Six-year Journey to Jupiter

  • Nasa's Jupiter-bound solar-powered Juno spacecraft has successfully executed a manoeuvre to adjust its flight path, setting the stage for its rendezvous with the solar system's largest planet.
  • Juno was launched in 2011, and will arrive at Jupiter in July this year to study the giant planet from an elliptical, polar orbit.
  • The spacecraft will orbit the Jovian world 33 times, skimming to within 5,000 km above the planet's cloud tops every 14 days.

CO2 Converted Directly into Clean-burning Fuel

  • In a first, researchers have directly converted carbon dioxide from thin air into methanol fuel, a discovery that can create a sustainable fuel source from greenhouse gas emissions in the near future.
  • Methanol is a clean-burning fuel for internal combustion engines, a fuel for fuel cells and a raw material used to produce many petrochemical products.

Ancient Extinction of Giant Australian Bird Points to Humans

  • The flightless bird, known as Genyornis newtoni, was nearly 7 feet tall and appears to have lived in much of Australia prior to the establishment of humans on the continent 50,000 years ago.
  • The first direct evidence that humans played a substantial role in the extinction of the huge, wondrous beasts inhabiting Australia some 50,000 years ago - in this case a 500-pound bird - has been discovered by a University of Colorado Boulder-led team.
  • This is the first reliable evidence humans were preying on now-extinct Australian Megafauna.

Widest Known Solar System Discovered

  • Astronomers have discovered the widest known solar system, consisting of a huge planet that takes nearly a million years to orbit its star.
  • The planet, known as 2MASS J2126, is estimated to have about 11.6 to 15 times the mass of Jupiter.
  • It is about 7,000 Earth-Sun distances from its star, giving it the widest orbit known. One circuit around its star takes the around 900,000 Earth years.
  • This is the widest planet system found so far.
