NASA Awards Space Station Cargo Contracts

  • US space agency NASA has awarded the second round of commercial contracts to resupply the International Space Station to the following three private spaceflight companies Orbital ATK, Sierra Nevada and SpaceX.
  • Each of these companies will get at least six flights to deliver cargo to the space station, which will begin in late 2019 and extend through 2024.
  • Orbital ATK of Virginia and SpaceX of California, the winners of the first round of NASA's Commercial Resupply Services contracts, have already used their own space capsules to send supplies several times to the orbiting lab about 400 kilometers above Earth.
  • The only new face is Colorado-based Sierra Nevada.

The Most Luminous Supernova

  • A team of astronomers has discovered the most luminous supernova ever observed. It is called ASAS-SN-15lh.
  • Supernovae are violent stellar explosions and some of the brightest objects in the universe.
  • The newly found super-luminous supernova was discovered by the All Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae team. The only all-sky variability survey in existence, it is capable of finding normal supernovae out to about 350 million light years from earth.

NASA's Juno Mission Sets New Distance Record

  • NASA's Juno spacecraft mission to Jupiter has broken the record to become the humanity's most distant solar-powered emissary.
  • Juno has travelled about 493 million miles (793 million kilometres) from the sun.
  • European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft was the previous record-holder, whose orbit peaked out at the 492-million-mile (792-million-kilometres) mark in October 2012.
  • NASA's Juno was launched in 2011and is the first solar-powered spacecraft designed to operate at such a great distance from the sun.

New Alien Planets

  • NASA's planet-hunting revamped Kepler mission has found more than 100 confirmed planets orbiting other stars.
  • Some of the planets are very different from what the spacecraft observed during its original mission.
  • It has also found a system with three planets that are bigger than Earth, spotted a planet in the Hyades star cluster -- the nearest open star cluster to Earth -- and discovered a planet being ripped apart as it orbits a white dwarf star.

Five Super-sized Stars Discovered

  • Eta Carinae, the most luminous and massive stellar system ever, is best known for an enormous eruption seen in the mid-19th century that hurled at least 10 times the sun's mass into space.
  • Using archival data from NASA's Spitzer and Hubble space telescopes, researchers have found twins of superstar Eta Carinae in other galaxies for the first time.
  • Located about 7,500 light-years away in the southern constellation of Carina, Eta Carinae outshines our sun by five million times.

Element 113 on Periodic Table Discovered in Asia

  • Element 113, discovered by Japan-based RIKEN group, has become the first element on the periodic table found in Asia.
  • RIKEN is Japan's largest comprehensive research institution renowned for high-quality research in a diverse range of scientific disciplines.
