Multi-modal Wearable Device

  • Researchers have come up with a multi-modal sensing device that is capable of tracking the fine-grained activities and behaviour of people suffering from dementia.
  • The researchers have created a wearable device for the wrist that can track a person's movements, ambient environment, bio-signals and much more.

Scramjet Rocket Engine Successfully Tested

  • India successfully tested its own scramjet or air breathing engine with the launch of a rocket.
  • The scramjet engine, used only during the atmospheric phase of the rocket's flight, will help in bringing down the launch cost by reducing the amount of oxidiser to be carried along with the fuel.
  • The scramjet engine designed by ISRO uses hydrogen as fuel and the oxygen from the atmospheric air as the oxidiser.
  • India is the fourth country to demonstrate the flight testing of scramjet engine.

Earth-like Planet Found

  • Scientists have discovered an Earth-sized planet orbiting the star nearest our Sun, opening up the glittering prospect of a habitable world that may one day be explored by robots.
  • The planet is named Proxima b, the planet is in a temperate zone compatible with the presence of liquid water.

Object Orbiting Sun in Backward Orbit Found

  • A mysterious 200-km wide chunk of ice has been discovered beyond the orbit of Neptune.
  • Bizarrely, this object is going around the sun in a backwards direction and its orbit is tilted by 110 degrees from the plane in which all planets stay.
  • The object has been named ‘Niku’, a Chinese word for "rebellious" by the international team of astronomers that made the discovery.

World’s First Quantum Satellite

  • China has launched its quantum satellite, the first in the world.
  • It is nicknamed 'Micius', the satellite will circle the Earth once every 90 minutes after it enters a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 500 km.
  • In its two-year mission, QUESS is designed to establish "hack-proof" quantum communications by transmitting uncrackable keys from space to the ground, and provide insights into the strangest phenomenon in quantum physics -- quantum entanglement.
