Source of Heat on Jupiter

  • New research suggests that Jupiter's Great Red Spot may be the mysterious heat source behind the planet's surprisingly high upper atmospheric temperatures.
  • The Great Red Spot has delighted and mystified since its discovery in the 17th Century.

NASA Discovers Alien Solar System

  • NASA's exoplanet hunter has found a bizarre alien solar system that has tiny spaced planets with unique orbits. The system, dubbed as Kepler-80 after its discoverer, is located about 1000 light years away from the Earth.
  • The study reveals that Kepler-80 consists of four exoplanets and a dwarf star that orbit around the same star with years equivalent to one, three, four, seven and nine Earth days.

Two New Worlds Discovered

  • Scientists have discovered two small 'worlds' far outside the orbit of Neptune in the deepest survey ever conducted to search out distant solar system objects.
  • The new objects are located beyond the Kuiper Belt, which is a region of small icy objects just beyond Neptune, of which Pluto is a member.

New Class of Organic Molecule to Store Electricity

  • Scientists have invented a new high-performing organic molecule, inspired by vitamin B2, that can safely store electricity. They had previously developed a high-capacity flow battery that stored energy in organic molecules called quinones and a food additive called ferrocyanide.
  • The team found inspiration in vitamin B2, which helps to store energy from food in the body. The key difference between B2 and quinones is that nitrogen atoms, instead of oxygen atoms, are involved in picking up and giving off electrons.
