Planet Orbiting Two Stars

  • The US space agency NASA has found a planet that orbits two stars in the system.
  • Astronomers have confirmed the existence of a planet orbiting pair of stars in the system OGLE-2007-BLG-349, located 8,000 light-years away towards the centre of our galaxy.
  • The planet orbits roughly 300 million miles from the stellar duo and completes an orbit around both the stars roughly every seven years.

Giant Icy Planet Growing Around Nearby Star

  • Astronomers have found signs of a giant icy planet growing around TW Hydrae, one of the closest young stars to Earth.
  • Based on the distance from the central star and the distribution of tiny dust grains, the baby planet is thought to be an icy giant, similar to Uranus and Neptune in our solar system.
  • TW Hydrae is one of the most favourable targets for investigating planet formation.

Weather Satellite INSAT-3DR Placed in Orbit

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation's GSLV-F05 rocket has successfully placed its advanced weather satellite INSAT-3DR into the orbit.
  • The INSAT-3DR satellite will supplement the meteorological and data relay services of its predecessor INSAT-3D, which is in operation since July 26, 2013.

NASA Astronauts Return to Earth

  • NASA astronaut and Expedition 48 Commander Jeff Williams along with crewmates Alexey Ovchinin and Oleg Skripochka have returned to Earth safely after record-breaking mission aboard the International Space Station.
  • Williams now has spent 534 days in space, making him first on the all-time NASA astronaut list. Skripochka now has 331 days in space on two flights, while Ovchinin spent 172 days in space on his first.

Lost Comet Lander Philae Found

  • The little robot is visible in new images downloaded from the Rosetta probe in orbit around the icy dirt-ball 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.
  • As per the European Space Agency officials, there is no doubt about the.
  • Philae was dropped on to the comet by Rosetta in 2014 but fell silent 60 hours later when its battery ran flat.
  • The discovery comes just a few weeks before controllers plan to crash-land Rosetta itself on to the comet to formally end its investigation of 67P.
