New Ransomware Attack

  • Weeks after the WannaCry ransomware affected systems in over 100 countries, another major cyber-attack is causing mass disruption across Europe, hitting Ukraine and Russia the hardest.
  • Reports suggest that Russia's biggest oil company, Ukraine's international airport as well as global shipping firm AP Moller-Maersk have been impacted by the attack.

Senior Citizen of the Solar System

  • Astronomers have finally found how old Jupiter is. The study suggests that the planet's core had already grown to be 20 times more massive than Earth just 1 million years after the sun formed.
  • Jupiter is the oldest planet of the solar system and its solid core formed well before the solar nebula gas dissipated.

Diverse Minerals in Martian Rocks

  • Examining initial samples of rocks collected by NASA's Mars Curiosity rover, scientists have found a wide diversity of minerals in the lower-most layers of Mount Sharp Mountain.
  • The minerals found in the four samples drilled near the base of Mount Sharp suggest several different environments were present in ancient Gale Crater.
  • At the base are minerals from a primitive magma source; they are rich in iron and magnesium.
  • Moving higher in the section, scientists saw more silica-rich minerals.

Two Massive Planets Discovered

  • Astronomers have discovered two new gas giant planets, orbiting a star located about 138 light years away from the Earth.
  • One of the two worlds is a Saturn-mass planet, while the other one is a cold exoplanet several times more massive than Jupiter.
  • The two planets orbit a star HD 27894, which was first detected in 2005 and is about 20 per cent less massive than the sun.
  • The two gas giant exoplanets have received designations HD 27894 c and HD 27894 d.

World's First Driverless Train

  • Chinese rail transit firm CRRC has developed a driverless train or smart bus that can run without tracks.
  • The vehicle is about 30 meters long and comes with sensors that can read the dimensions of roads and plan its own route.
  • According to the government of Zhuzhou City, a 6.5-kilometer ART line will be built through downtown Zhuzhou and operations will start in 2018.
