IIT-Kgp Develops Clickbait Blocker

Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp) has developed a browser extension that would stop 'clickbaits' from appearing while reading online news. Clickbait is a term used for web content whose main goal is to get a user to click on a link to go to a certain webpage. Such clicks and page visits are often paid for by advertisers.

African-American astronaut's first flight to ISS nixed

Nasa’s Jeanette Jo Epps, an astronaut and American aerospace engineer, will not be a part of the International Space Station crew set to launch in June, the US space agency said. Epps, who would have been the first African-American crew member on board the ISS, was pulled from her mission for unspecified reasons. Only three other African American women have flown into space. Epp’ assignment in January 2017 garnered a fair amount of favourable publicity for the space agency.

Gadget to help you sleep

A new wrist-worn gadget may help people with sleep problems by objectively tracking their real-life sleep habits and quality. The gadget, called actimeter, records data on wrist movement from which one can obtain activity patterns for up to three months. The researchers from a German University used the actimeters to assess rest/activity cycles, not just over the course of the day, but also during sleep itself. The findings are the latest in a larger, ongoing human sleep project, designed to learn more about sleep and its essential role in our lives by collecting sleep data on thousands of people in the real world.

Isro-TeamIndus deal falls apart, Japanese moon mission delayed

Team Hakuto, the sole Japanese team competing for the $30 million Google Lunar XPRIZE competition, said that it would be difficult to launch its rover before the March 31 deadline as it received confirmation from TeamIndus on Thursday that the Indian team and Isro have not been able to agree on a launch date. The Indian space agency’s PSLV rocket was to send both TeamIndus’s and Hakuto’s ‘Sorato’ rovers to the moon but the Indian team pulled out recently due to financial reasons. Both TeamIndus and Team Hakuto were participating in the competition, which envisaged the rovers landing on the moon by March 31, moving 500m on the surface transmitting hi-res videos and images to the ground stations.

Isro launches 100th satellite, 30 others

India reaffirmed its space prowess and commercial launch capabilities as it successfully launched its 100th satellite along with 30 other spacecraft, including weather observation Cartosat 2 series onboard the Polar rocket. This was PSLV’s longest-ever mission. With the successful launch, including 28 satellites from foreign countries, by the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, Isro put behind a rare failure it encountered four months ago. The space agency had suffered a setback after the failure of the PSLV-C39 mission in August last year. The previous mission to launch backup navigation satellite IRNSS-1H on board PSLV-C39 had failed after the heat shield did not separate in the final leg of the launch sequence, with the satellite getting stuck in the fourth stage of the rocket. PM Modi hailed Isro scientists for the successful PSLV C-40 mission. A visibly relieved Isro chairman A S Kiran Kumar, on his final mission as the chief of the space agency, said he was happy to provide Cartosat 2 Series as a New Year gift for the country.
