Giant Gas Planet Discovered

  • Researchers have detected what appears to be a Saturn-like planet residing near the Milky Way galaxy\'s bulge.
  • The newly discovered exoplanet has a mass somewhere between Saturn and Jupiter and orbits a star with half the mass of the sun.

Gravity Wave Detector

  • To gain a better understanding of the universe, Japanese scientists began a test run of an underground telescope to detect gravitational waves.
  • The test run, which will continue until March end, comes a month after a US-led team of scientists claimed it had identified the gravitational waves, theorised 100 years ago by Albert Einstein, EFE news reported.
  • The KAGRA telescope is installed inside a tunnel located more than 200 metres underground to minimise seismic noise.
  • The Japanese efforts to detect gravitational waves are being led by 2015 Physics Nobel laureate Takaaki Kajita.

Smallest Ever Viable Genome

  • American scientists have created the smallest viable genome existing in nature with just enough essential genes for an organism to function and reproduce on its own.
  • The synthetic genome of this bacterium, dubbed JCVI-syn3.0, only carries 473 genes, compared to about 20,000 for a human being.
  • the genome contains nearly all genes involved in reading and expressing the genetic information in the genome, as well as in preserving genetic information across generations.

Glove Capable of Turning Gestures into Music

  • A Texas-based startup known as Remidi, has unveiled a unique high-tech glove that is capable of turning hand gestures into music.
  • The unique gloves that has been named \'Remidi T8\', is the world\'s first wearable instrument to record, play, perform and also carries the potential to change the way people make and play music.
  • The device is equipped with pressure-sensitive sensors along its fingertips and palm and its wristband controls the combination of sounds from each sensor that are then translated as the user moves the hand.

Planet with Eccentric Orbit Spotted

  • Researchers have spotted an extrasolar planet about 117 light-years from Earth that boasts the most eccentric orbit yet seen.
  • The planets in our solar system have nearly circular orbits, astronomers have discovered several extrasolar planets with highly elliptical or eccentric orbits.
  • The extrasolar planet HD 20782 has the most eccentric orbit known, measured at an eccentricity of .96.
  • This means that the planet moves in a nearly flattened ellipse, traveling a long path far from its star and then making a fast and furious slingshot around the star at its closest approach.
