ICC Player of the Month for October 2024

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) revealed the winners of the ICC Players of the Month for October 2024. This month (October), the honours went to New Zealand's all-rounder Amelia Kerr won the title in the women's category and Pakistan's spinner Noman Ali in the men's category. Both players were pivotal in their respective teams' successes last month, showcasing skill, resilience, and leadership on the international stage.
  • Amelia Kerr's phenomenal performances were instrumental in leading New Zealand to victory in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup held in the UAE. As a dynamic all-rounder, Kerr left a significant mark on the tournament and proved to be an unstoppable force throughout.
  • Noman Ali clinched the ICC Men's Player of the Month title for his stellar performances in Pakistan's Test series against England. His bowling was instrumental in Pakistan's comeback victory at home, turning the series around from a 1-0 deficit to a memorable series win.

Pankaj Advani Wins IBSF World Billiards Championship in Qatar

  • Pankaj Advani, the veteran Indian cueist, once again showcased his mastery in the sport by securing his 28th world title. At the IBSF World Billiards Championship in Doha, Qatar, he triumphed over England's Robert Hall 4-2, marking his seventh consecutive World Billiards Championship win.
  • Singapore's Peter Gilchrist and India's Sourav Kothari shared the joint bronze medal in the championship.

IPL 2025: Gujarat Titans Appoint Parthiv Patel as New Batting Coach

  • Indian Premier League (IPL) outfit Gujarat Titans (GT) appointed former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel as their new batting coach. Parthiv, represented India in ODI and Test cricket. He will work closely with former India speedster Ashish Nehra who is also the head coach of the 2022 IPL winners.
  • Patel played in 139 matches before calling time on his IPL career in 2019. He remains one of few players to have won the IPL title with both CSK and MI during his stints with the two most successful teams in the league.

Delhi Capitals Announce Munaf Patel as Bowling Coach

  • Delhi Capitals announced former India international Munaf Patel as their bowling coach for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
  • Munaf played for India in all three formats and was a part of the 2011 ODI World Cup winning squad where he was the third highest wicket-taker for the Men in Blue. In the IPL, he has represented the likes of Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Lions, picking 74 wickets in 63 matches.

Uma Mahesh Wins Gold Medal at FISU World University Championship

  • Uma Mahesh clinched a gold medal at the prestigious FISU World University Championship held at Karni Singh Stadium in New Delhi. Competing in the 10m Air Rifle men's team event, Uma and his teammates outperformed their opponents and secured the top spot.
  • Mahesh who trains at Olympic medallist Gagan Narang's Gun for Glory Academy, added yet another title to his collection. His achievements already include two ISSF World Cup gold medals and an Asian Championship gold, among others.
  • The International University Sports Federation launched the FISU World University Championships in 1963.

Quanhai Li Re-Elected as World Sailing President for Second Term

  • At the World Sailing General Assembly held in Singapore, Quanhai Li was re-elected as president for a new four-year term. The only Chinese president of an Olympic International Federation, Li's re-election marks a significant achievement for both him and the sport. He received 55 votes, securing a decisive victory over his competitors, Rodion Luka (UKR) with 2 votes and Philippe Rogge (BEL) with 29 votes. Li's leadership has been central to the growth and stability of World Sailing in recent years, and his continued role signals the future direction of the sport globally.

Chennai Grandmasters 2024: Aravindh Chithambaram Clinches Title

  • GM Aravindh Chithambaram, buoyed by a stunning turn of fortunes in the last two rounds walked away with the Chennai Grand Masters title. On an action packed day at the Anna Centenary Library, the Masters category witnessed a three-way tie between Aravindh, Levon Aronian and Arjun Erigaisi. It led to a play-off, where Aravindh defeated Aronian. He won the first blitz and drew the second with black pieces to be crowned champion of the second edition.

Tayyab Ikram Re-elected FIH President

  • Tayyab Ikram was re-elected as the President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) for a second consecutive term, a significant achievement for Pakistan's hockey. At the 49th FIH Congress in Muscat, Oman, Ikram secured 79 votes out of 126, surpassing his competitor, Marc Coudron of Belgium, who received 47 votes. His re-election not only signifies personal recognition but also reinforces Pakistan's growing influence in global hockey.
  • The FIH President's and Honorary Awards were also presented. Recognized for their significant contributions were individuals such as Gill Gemming (NZL), Chaiyapak Siriwat (THA), and Marissa Langeni (RSA), along with the French Hockey Federation and the Uganda Hockey Association for their exceptional governance and developmental efforts.

Coco Gauff Becomes Youngest in 20 Years to Lift WTA Title

  • Coco Gauff became the youngest player to win the WTA final title in 20 years with a gruelling 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/2) victory over Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Gauff rallied back from 3-6, 1-3 down, and erased a one-break deficit twice in the decider, and overcame Zheng in three hours and four minutes – the second-longest WTA final in 2024.

  • The much-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Mega Auction will bring a fresh wave of excitement as franchises vie for top cricketing talent to bolster their squads. Neeraj Chopra Teams up with Jan Zelezny

  • Two-time Olympics medallist Neeraj Chopra announced that his idol Jan Zelezny as his new coach in the new Olympics cycle. Chopra, who parted ways with his long-time coach Klaus Bartonietz after the Paris Olympics, sought Zelezny's services after failing to break the 90m barrier for the last five years.
  • Czech Republic's Zelezny, who is a three-time Olympics and world champion and still holds the world record after registering a throw of 98.48m in 1996, would start working with Chopra in South Africa.

  • Arjun Erigaisi made a significant leap in the chess world by securing the world No. 2 spot in live ratings in November. His victory over Alexey Sarana in Round 3 of the Chennai Grand Masters tournament boosted his live rating to 2805.8, propelling him past both USA's Fabiano Caruana, who stands at 2805.0, and American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura at 2802.0.

Aman Sehrawat among Top Contenders as Bengaluru Gears up to Host Wrestling Nationals

  • Paris Olympics bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat will headline a star-studded line-up as Bengaluru prepares to host the Senior National Wrestling Championship for the first time ever, from December 6 to 8.
  • Joining Aman on the mats will be U-20 World Wrestling Champion Antim Panghal, along with 2019 World Championship silver medal winner Deepak Punia, U23 world champion Reetika Hooda, Olympian Sonam Malik, Radhika, Manisha Bhanwala, Bipasha, Priya, Udit, Chirag, Sunil Kumar, and Narinder Cheema.
  • The event will be held at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium and the championship is expected to feature over 1000 participants and officials from across 25 affiliated state member units as well as Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) and Services Sports Promotion Board (SSPB).
