Trump Names Karoline Leavitt as White House Press Secretary

  • United States (US) President-elect Donald Trump named Karoline Leavitt as the White House secretary. Leavitt will be the youngest person ever to take charge of this post.
  • Previously that distinction went to Ronald Ziegler, who was 29 when he took the position in 1969 in Richard Nixon's administration. Earlier, Leavitt had served as Trump's campaign press secretary.
  • During Trump's first term in office from 2017 to 2021, Leavitt worked in the White House press office. She then became communications director for New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik.

Nepal-Bangladesh Power Trade via Indian Grid Begins With First Trilateral Transaction

  • Union Minister for Power, Manohar Lal jointly inaugurated the flow of power from Nepal to Bangladesh through the Indian grid along with Md. Fouzul Kabir Khan, Advisor, Ministry of Power, Bangladesh and Dipak Khadka, Nepal's Minister of Energy, in a virtual event hosted by Nepal's Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation.
  • This historic occasion marks the first trilateral power transaction which has been carried out through the Indian grid. The start of this power flow from Nepal to Bangladesh through India is expected to boost sub-regional connectivity in the power sector.

India Refuses to Send Kabaddi Team to Pakistan

  • Just days after denying the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) permission to travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy, the Indian government now refused to approve the Kabaddi federation's request to participate in a series of friendly games in Pakistan. The move reiterates India's stance on not participating in any sporting activity on Pakistan soil. The last time the Indian cricket team travelled to Pakistan was back in 2008 for the Asia Cup.
  • With how things stand, India's blind cricket team is also unlikely to travel to Pakistan for the World Cup to be held in Lahore and Multan in the last week of November.

Delhi's Sarai Kale Khan ISBT Chowk Renamed after Birsa Munda

  • Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced that the chowk outside the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) bus stand in Delhi's Sarai Kale Khan will be renamed after Bhagwan Birsa Munda.
  • The Union Minister made the announcement at an event in Delhi where Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled a statue of Bhagwan Birsa Munda on the occasion of 'Janjatiya Gaurav Divas', the birth anniversary of the tribal independence activist.

International Students' Day

  • International Students' Day, celebrated globally on November 17, is a day that honors the spirit of student activism, the role of students in social change, and their contributions to shaping the world. The day acknowledges the struggles and aspirations of students while promoting the importance of education and equality.
  • International Students' Day was first observed on November 17, 1941, in response to the tragic events that occurred during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. On this day, 1,200 students were arrested, and several were executed for protesting the regime. The Nazi forces also shut down universities and sent students to concentration camps. This day was chosen to honor those students who fought for their rights and, by extension, all students who have sacrificed for the cause of freedom, education, and human rights.
  • The theme for International Students' Day 2024 focuses on the idea that "Students as Change-makers for a Better World". This theme highlights the ongoing fight for equality, freedom of speech, and the right to education for all. It encourages students worldwide to engage in activism, stand for justice, and create positive societal changes through education and collaboration.

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

  • The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR) is observed on the third Sunday of November each year (November 17 in 2024). It is a global event dedicated to honouring the millions of lives lost or severely affected by road traffic accidents. This day also highlights the suffering of victims, their families, and communities, while advocating for stronger action to prevent road crashes and their consequences.
  • The idea of a day to honor road traffic victims began with church services in the UK in 1993 and 1994.
  • These services were coordinated by RoadPeace, a charity for road traffic victims established in 1992.
  • In 1995, RoadPeace, along with other road victim organizations under the European Federation of Road Traffic Victims (FEVR), agreed to observe a common day of remembrance on the third Sunday of November.
  • In 2004, the UN Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) considered establishing a global day to emphasize road safety, and the endorsement of the World Day of Remembrance was suggested.
  • On October 26, 2005, the UN General Assembly adopted the World Day of Remembrance as an official recognition for road traffic victims and their families.

RINL-VSP Bags 3 Prestigious Gold Awards at ICQCC-2024 held at Colombo

  • Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), bagged three prestigious 'Gold Awards at the International Convention on Quality Control Circles (ICQCC-2024) held at Colombo, Sri Lanka. The International Convention was organised by the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Quality and Productivity (SLAAQP) at Colombo in hybrid mode. The three LQC (lean quality circle) teams from RINL, 'ARMOR' from SBM (Special Bar Mill), TARANGINP from QA&TD (Quality Assurance & Technology Development) and `SADHANA' from SMS-i(Steel Melt Shop-i) presented their case studies from Centre for HRD of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
  • The International Convention on Quality Control Circles (ICQCC) - 2024 was hosted under the theme 'Beyond Boundaries: A Quest for Quality, Productivity & Innovation'.

MATES Scheme: New Opportunity for Indians to Work in Australia (17)

  • Australia launched the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES) scheme, offering Indian university graduates and early professionals the chance to work in Australia for up to two years. The scheme is part of the Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement (MMPA) between India and Australia. Applicants must have proficient English (IELTS 6 overall, 5 in each module) and have graduated within two years from top Indian universities. The program starts with 3,000 places annually, and participants can bring dependents with work rights.
  • MATES aims to encourage mutually-beneficial skills and knowledge transfer between Australia and India.

Five Indian Students Selected for Rhodes Scholarship 2025

  • Five Rhodes Scholars-Elect for India 2025 have been selected after a competitive application process and two rounds of preliminary interviews. The shortlisted finalists were interviewed and five were chosen to receive the prestigious scholarship.
  • The five winners of this scholarship are Rayan Chakrabarti, Vibha Swaminathan, Avanish Vats, Shubham Narwal, and Pal Aggarwal.
  • The Rhodes Scholarship is the world's preeminent and oldest graduate fellowship, based at the University of Oxford since 1903. The scholarships for India began in 1947 and have been awarded to five applicants each year. Students from anywhere in the world can apply for a Rhodes Scholarship.
