  • Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge dissolved the entire Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) unit in Himachal Pradesh along with the district and block units with immediate effect.
  • The move is seen as part of the Congress' plan to restructure the Himachal unit of the party. There has been no change in the PCC ever since the Congress formed its government in the hill state.
  • Outgoing president of Himachal Pradesh Congress Pratibha Singh already become a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision-making body of the party. Singh, who is wife of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, was appointed as state Congress chief in 2022.

Indian Navy Hosts 3rd Mahasagar Summit on Maritime Security

  • The Indian Navy successfully conducted the third edition of the Mahasagar summit, continuing its flagship outreach initiative for maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Held virtually under the theme, "Training Cooperation to Mitigate Common Maritime Security Challenges in the IOR," the summit brought together senior leaders from 10 countries and discussed collaborative efforts to tackle shared maritime threats. The 10 countries which participated in the event are: Bangladesh, Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.
  • Launched in 2003, Mahasagar is a bi-annual event aimed at fostering cooperation among maritime heads in the IOR. It has become an essential platform for discussing maritime security challenges, strengthening partnerships, and developing training programs to build regional capabilities. The event underscores India's commitment to the vision of "Active Security and Growth for All in the Region" (ASGAR).

India, US Hold 21st Military Cooperation Meeting in Delhi

  • The 21st edition of India-US Military Cooperation Group (MCG) meeting was held in New Delhi.
  • The meeting was co-chaired from the Indian side by Lt Gen J.P. Mathew, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (CISC) and Lt Gen Joshua M. Rudd, Deputy Commander (USINDOPACOM).

National Cancer Awareness Day 2024

  • National Cancer Awareness Day is observed by India on November 7 every year since 2014. This day is dedicated to increasing public awareness of cancer prevention, detection and treatment. It also marks the birth anniversary of Marie Curie, the renowned Polish-French physicist and chemist who was born in 1867 and received a Nobel Prize for her contributions to science.
  • In September 2014, India's Union Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan, established National Cancer Awareness Day. A committee was formed, and November 7 was selected as the annual observance day to educate the public about cancer, its treatment, and the importance of early intervention in significantly increasing survival rates.

Anil Pradhan Wins Rohini Nayyar Prize

  • Anil Pradhan, co-founder of Young Tinker Foundation, a non-profit organisation working on hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education in underserved areas, was awarded the third Rohini Nayyar Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Rural Development.
  • The prize has been instituted in the memory of Rohini Nayyar by her family. Nayyar, an economist, served as an IAS officer in the Uttar Pradesh cadre, and worked with the erstwhile Planning Commission of India from 1987 to 2005. She passed away in 2021.
  • The prize, comprising a cash award of Rs. 10 lakh, a citation and trophy, is given annually by the Nayyar Foundation for Social and Economic Purpose, and is meant for individuals below 40 years in age.

Union Cabinet Approves PM-Vidyalaxmi Scheme to Support Meritorious Students' Higher Education

  • The Union Cabinet approved the PM-Vidyalaxmi scheme, a new initiative aimed at ensuring that financial constraints no longer prevent talented students in India from pursuing quality higher education.
  • Through this scheme, eligible students who gain admission into accredited higher education institutions can access collateral-free, guarantor-free loans to cover tuition fees and other course-related expenses.
  • PM-Vidyalaxmi is designed to provide financial support to students admitted to the top 860 institutions across India, reaching more than 22 lakh students annually.
  • For loans up to Rs. 7.5 lakh, the Government of India will provide a 75 per cent credit guarantee, encouraging banks and financial institutions to expand their loan coverage.
  • The scheme will be managed via a fully digital, transparent, and student-friendly portal. Additionally, students from families with an annual income of up to Rs. 8 lakh can avail a 3 per cent interest subsidy for loans up to Rs. 10 lakh.s during the moratorium period, provided they do not qualify for any other government scholarship or subsidy.

IIT Delhi Becomes India's Top Institute, Overtakes IIT Bombay: QS Asia University Rankings

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) earned the top spot in India in the 'QS World University Rankings: Asia 2025', thanks to improvements in eight indicators, most prominently, staff with PhD, in which it climbed by 58 places.
  • Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) got the second spot.
  • Regionally, IIT Delhi climbed to 44th rank from 46th rank, taking the national top position and overtaking last year's leader, IIT Bombay which slipped from 40th rank to the 48th rank regionally.
  • It is not just IIT Bombay that saw a decline, some other top varsities such as IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IISc and IIT Kanpur also observed a drop in their rankings. While IIT Bombay fell by eight ranks, IIT Madras saw a drop of three years (from 53 to 56 this year). The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and IIT Kanpur saw a decline of four ranks each as IISc fell from 58 to 62 this year and IIT-K fell from 63 to 67 this year. IIT Kharagpur, however, saw a decline of only one rank as it fell from 59 to 60th rank this year.
