Shigeru Ishiba Set to Become Japan's Next Prime Minister

  • Shigeru Ishiba is set to become the next Prime Minister of Japan after winning the leadership of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) which has ruled the country for the past seven decades.
  • In 1986, Ishiba became the youngest member of the House of Representatives as a candidate from the LDP. Despite his long affiliation, he often clashed with party views, even defecting to the Japan Renewal Party (1993-1996) before rejoining the LDP. Nirmala Sitharaman Attends 9th AIIB Board of Governors Meeting in Samarkand

  • Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman represented India at the 9th Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) Board of Governors meeting held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. During her visit, she also engaged in discussions with Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the sidelines of the meeting.
  • The theme for this year's (2024) AIIB Board of Governors meeting was 'Building Resilient Infrastructure for All', which emphasises the bank's focus on developing financial tools that enable member countries to withstand climate-induced shocks. In June 2024, AIIB introduced Climate Policy-Based Financing (CPBF) to mobilise private capital, supporting member countries in fulfilling their national climate action plans.
  • During the meeting, the Board of Governors approved the Republic of Nauru's application to join the AIIB, bringing the total membership to 110.
  • The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), operational since 2016, is a multilateral bank with China as its largest shareholder (29.9%) and India as the second largest (7.74%). AIIB provides both sovereign and non-sovereign loans, with sovereign loans guaranteed by governments and non-sovereign loans directed toward the private sector. The bank focuses on funding projects that contribute to sustainable and environmentally sound infrastructure development.

India Elected to GlobE Network Steering Committee

  • India was elected to the fifteen-member steering committee of the Global Operational Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities (GlobE Network) during a plenary session in Beijing, as announced by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This election follows a multi-stage voting process and underscores India's commitment to addressing international corruption and financial crime.
  • As a member of the steering committee, India will play a pivotal role in shaping the global agenda for anti-corruption and asset recovery efforts.
  • The GlobE Network serves as a platform for international cooperation, enabling member countries to tackle cross-border corruption and financial crime effectively. Currently, the network includes 121 member countries and 219 member authorities. India and Uzbekistan Sign Bilateral Investment Treaty in Tashkent

As of August 2024, India's Overseas Direct Investment (ODI) in Uzbekistan amounted to $20 million, with significant investments in sectors like pharmaceuticals, amusement parks, automobile components, and hospitality.

Earth's New Mini Moon: Asteroid 2024 PT5 Orbits for Two Months

  • Earth welcomed a temporary 'mini-moon' in the form of a small asteroid named 2024 PT5, which is orbiting our planet from September 29 to November 25, 2024. Discovered by NASA's Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (Atlas) in August 2024, this asteroid measures approximately 33 feet wide and originates from the Arjuna asteroid belt, a region filled with various space rocks.
  • Asteroids like 2024 PT5 are not uncommon; similar mini-moons have been observed in the past. For instance, the asteroid 2022 NX1 has orbited Earth multiple times, with its next expected return in 2055. After 2024 PT5 exits Earth's orbit, it will remain in proximity until its closest approach on January 9, 2025. Researchers believe it will again return to Earth's orbit in approximately 30 years.

First Memorial for Military Intelligence Heroes in Pune

  • India unveiled its first memorial dedicated to the Military Intelligence (MI) personnel who lost their lives in service. The memorial, called Satark Park, is located in Wanowrie, Pune cantonment in Maharashtra. Inspired by MI's motto 'Sada Satark' (always alert), the park honours MI heroes with busts and brief descriptions of their contributions.
  • The memorial features the busts of several decorated MI personnel, including Kirti Chakra awardees Naik Pratap Singh and Brigadier Ravi Datt Mehta, and Shaurya Chakra awardees Sepoy Om Shiv Sharma, Naik Jangbir Singh, and Havildar S Samy Kannan. It has been constructed by the Military Intelligence Training School and Depot (MITSD) with support from Roadway Solutions India Infra Ltd.
  • Since 1962, 40 MI personnel, including 11 officers, have died in various operations, primarily in Jammu and Kashmir and the North Eastern borders. Their stories, previously unpublished due to the secretive nature of their work, will now be shared with the public.

Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh Takes Over as New Indian Air Force Chief

The focus was to identify and recognise villages which preserve and promote cultural and natural assets through community-based values and commitment to sustainability in all aspects.
  • The first edition of the Best Tourism Villages Competition in 2023 saw applications from 795 villages. In the second edition of the Best Tourism Villages Competition, a total of 991 applications were received from 30 States and UTs, out of which 36 villages were recognised as winners across 8 categories of the Best Tourism Villages competition 2024.
  • Some of the winners are: Harshil and Gunji in Uttrakhand were recognised as best Vibrant Villages, Chitrakote in Chhattisgarh was recognised among the ones for Community Based Tourism, Kuthlur in Karanataka was among the ones recognised for Adventure Tourism.
