Modi extended India's readiness to share its development experience and digital public infrastructure, asserting that global governance should prioritize peace and equitable technology use.
  • The U.N. adopted the 'Pact for the Future', a progressive document that includes a Global Digital Compact and emphasises reform in the U.N. Security Council, particularly addressing Africa's underrepresentation.

  • In a groundbreaking move that signals the increasing convergence of Hollywood and artificial intelligence, Stability AI announced that James Cameron, the visionary director behind blockbuster films such as "Titanic" and "The Terminator," joined the company's board of directors.   • Stability AI, a London-based startup, has rapidly established itself as a major player in the field of generative AI. The company is best known for its artificial intelligence image-generation tool, which competes with similar offerings from tech giants like Google and OpenAI. Stability AI's technology has garnered significant attention and financial backing, with the company raising approximately $80 million in funding earlier this year.

India Overtakes Japan as Asia's Third most Powerful Nation

  • India overtook Japan and claimed the position of the third most powerful nation in Asia, according to the 2024 Asia Power Index. This milestone comes on the back of India's robust economic growth, youthful population, and diplomatic engagement.
  • The Asia Power Index, published annually by the Lowy Institute, evaluates countries based on their resource capabilities and influence in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • India's demographic advantage is also a key factor in this rating. While other regional powers like China and Japan face aging populations, India benefits from a youthful workforce, reflected in an 8.2-point increase in India's Future Resources score. This demographic strength positions India for continued economic expansion and greater regional influence.

Scientists Discover New Species of Rare Ghost Shark in New Zealand Waters

  • Scientists discovered a new species of ghost shark in the waters of New Zealand. The fish is rare and extremely hard to spot as it lives in the deep Pacific Ocean.
  • When it was first discovered the scientists from the National Institute for Water and Atmospherics (NIWA), New Zealand thought it to be an existing species. However, upon further examination, it was revealed that the species was new and genetically unique.
  • The new species, Australasian Narrow-Nosed spookfish, only resides in New Zealand and Australian waters.

Tata Steel Commissions India's Largest Blast Furnace in Kalinganagar

  • Tata Steel successfully commissioned India's largest blast furnace at its Kalinganagar facility in Odisha, marking a significant milestone for the steel sector. With a total investment of Rs. 27,000 crore, this Phase II expansion will increase the plant's capacity from 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 8 MTPA. The new facility is designed to meet the growing demands of various industries, including automotive, infrastructure, shipbuilding, defence, and oil and gas. Over the last decade, Odisha has become the largest investment destination for Tata Steel, with a cumulative investment exceeding Rs. 100,000 crore.

Rahul Dravid, Zaheer Khan, Karan Johar Invest in Swiggy

  • Celebrities from entertainment, sports, and business are backing food and grocery delivery platform Swiggy in the unlisted market as it approaches its IPO, despite facing stiff competition from rivals such as Zomato and Zepto.
  • Cricketers Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan, tennis player Rohan Bopanna, filmmaker Karan Johar, and actor-entrepreneur Ashish Chowdhry have invested in Swiggy.
  • Earlier, Swiggy attracted investments from Bollywood actors and entrepreneurs, including Madhuri Dixit Nene, Amitabh Bachchan, and Ritesh Malik, the founder of Innov8, during its pre-IPO funding rounds via the secondary market.

  • Varane lifted the World Cup with France in 2018 before finishing runner-up in 2022, featuring in 93 games for the national side.

  • Indian veteran Kamal Chawla clinched his maiden IBSF World 6-Red title with a commanding 6-2 victory over Pakistan's Asjad Iqbal in the final of the IBSF World Men's 6-Red Snooker Championship in the capital city of Mongolia Ulaanbaatar. Karnataka Government Launches India's First Knowledge Health Innovation Research City

  • The Karnataka government launched its 'Knowledge Health Innovation Research-City' (KHIR-City). This project, the first of its kind in India, aims to transform the state's innovation sector. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah officially began work on the first phase at a ceremony in Vidhana Soudha.
  • The KHIR-City covers 2,000 acres, with the initial phase developed on 500 acres. The project is expected to attract an investment of over Rs. 40,000 crore and create around 100,000 jobs, including both direct and indirect employment.
  • Drawing from models like Singapore's Biopolis and the US Research Triangle Park, KHIR-City will also incorporate elements of Bengaluru's Electronics City.

The 41st Indian Coast Guard Commanders' Conference Concludes

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the 41st edition of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Commanders' Conference in New Delhi. This three-day conference served as a crucial platform for ICG Commanders to engage in meaningful discussions on strategic, operational, and administrative matters amid evolving geopolitical landscapes and maritime security complexities.
  • Addressing the senior Commanders at the Coast Guard Headquarters, Rajnath Singh emphasised that the ICG is India's foremost guard, ensuring the security of the country's extensive coastline through constant monitoring of the Exclusive Economic Zone.
  • Throughout the conference, ICG Commanders interacted with senior military officials, including the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of the Naval Staff, promoting collaboration across the full spectrum of maritime security. The discussions aimed to evaluate key operational, logistical, and administrative initiatives undertaken over the past year, focusing on enhancing ICG's operational effectiveness and alignment with the government's vision of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat.'

Air Marshal S. P. Dharkar Next IAF Vice Chief

  • Ace fighter pilot Air Marshal S. P. Dharkar was appointed as the next Vice Chief of Air Staff.
  • He would be succeeding incumbent Air Marshal A. P. Singh, who has been designated as the next Chief of Air Staff.
  • Dharkar-- an experienced fighter pilot with over 3600 hours of flying. He is an alumnus of the Rashtriya Indian Military College Dehradun, National Defence Academy Pune, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and Air War College, USA. Commissioned in June 1985, he is a Qualified Flying Instructor, Fighter Strike Leader, and Instrument Rating Instructor and Examiner and has also been an Air Force Examiner.
  • He has instructional experience in conducting Professional Military Education for medium and senior level officers at the Defence Services Staff College and at the College of Air Warfare, Secunderabad.
  • He has served as Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Training) at Air Headquarters and Air Defence Commander at Headquarters Eastern Air Command.
  • He has the distinction of being the first Director General of Defence Space Agency. He has been the head of Eastern Air Command for the last two years now.

World Environmental Health Day

  • World Environmental Health Day is observed annually on September 26.   • The International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) established World Environmental Health Day in 2011 to emphasise the importance of environmental care for human health.
  • The theme for 2024 is 'Environmental Health: Creating Resilient Communities through Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation'. It emphasises the link between environmental health, climate change, and disaster risk management, calling for resilient communities that can address health risks related to climate change and natural disasters.

European Day of Languages

  • Every year since 2001 the European Day of Languages marked on September 26 celebrates the wealth of languages coexisting in Europe and beyond. Over 225 languages are native to Europe alone, not including languages that arrived on the continent through migration. The motto of this year's day is 'Languages for Peace'.
  • The European Day of Languages is also a celebration of democracy, freedom and solidarity. By understanding each other better, we are better able to find common solutions and to build a common future in which everyone matters, because everyone enriches the Europe of our birth.

IIT Madras Professor Receives Award from International Construction Body

  • Professor Ravindra Gettu from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) received the prestigious title of 'Honorary Member' from RILEM (International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems, and Structures).
  • This recognition marks a significant achievement, as he was the first Asian to serve as RILEM's President from 2018 to 2021 during its 78-year history. His leadership was pivotal in facilitating scientific collaboration amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fourteen Indian Institutes Get Spot in QS Global MBA & Business Master's Rankings 2025

  • Fourteen Indian full-time MBA programmes secured a position in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds global list for 2025 released in September. IIM Bangalore is the best performer among the Indian institutes, however, it has dropped out of the world's top 50 ranking. The other three Indian MBA programmes that have secured a spot in the top 100 are IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Calcutta, and the Indian School of Business.
  • Moreover, there are three new entries — IIM Kozhikode made its debut in the 151-200 band, the Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad, and Somaiya Vidyavihar University featured in the 251+ band.
