Nishad Kumar Wins High Jump Silver

  • Team India athlete Nishad Kumar bagged a silver medal in the men's high jump - T47 category final at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
  • With a leap of 2.04 metres, this is also Kumar's season-best performance. It noted that he bagged a silver medal during the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics as well.
  • United States of America (USA) athlete Roderick Townsend-Roberts extended his lead over Kumar with a season-best jump of 2.08m and won the gold medal, and Russia's Georgii Margiev took the bronze.

Nicholas Pooran Overtakes Chris Gayle for Most T20 Sixes in a Calendar Year

  • West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran is having the year of his life and has broken his fellow countryman Chris Gayle's record of most T20 sixes in a calendar year. Pooran scored 97 while playing for Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL), hitting nine sixes in his innings.
  • In total, Pooran now has 139 sixes in 58 T20 matches he has played so far in the year 2024. Gayle had hit 135 sixes in 35 T20 matches he had played in 2015.
  • With a quarter of the year still left in 2024, Pooran is sure to have his record improved from the current 139 sixes.

  • India is hosting the 15th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, 2024 'Safety 2024' from September 2 to 4 with focus on global efforts in areas such as road safety and drowning prevention.
  • The conference is being hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi; George Institute for Global Health in collaboration with the All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS), National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) and co-sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
  • With the theme 'Building a Safer Future for All: Equitable and Sustainable Strategies for Injury and Violence Prevention', Safety 2024 will spotlight global efforts to reduce injury and violence, particularly among vulnerable populations like children and adolescents.
  • Over three days, the international experts will share cutting-edge research, innovative practices and collaborative strategies to create safer environments and prevent injuries worldwide.
  • Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari delivered the inaugural address at the conference reflecting on the government's commitment to enhancing road safety across the nation.

  • He is a Category 'A' Qualified Flying Instructor with over 4,500 hours of flying and an alumnus of the Defence Service Staff College and National Defence College.

Writer and Social Activist K. J. Baby Passes Away

  • Writer and social activist K.J Baby, who worked for the upliftment of tribals in Wayanad, died. He was 70.
  • His body was found near his residence at Nadavayal village in the district.
  • Baby has been better known for an unconventional school 'Kanav', which he had established in 1991 for tribal students. He had also carved a niche for himself as a writer, dramatist and filmmaker.
  • Baby has been known as one of the few Malayalam writers who had made the voice of the marginalised tribals heard. His writings were considered a mirror of the brutality the community had faced through generations.
  • His major literary contributions include ' Nadugadhika', 'Mavelimantram', ' Bespurkkana', and 'Goodbye Malabar'. Mavelimantram, which bagged the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award in 1994, is reckoned as a milestone in Malayalam Dalit literature.
  • In 2021, he won the first Bharat Bhavan Award for Best Rural Drama for his play ' Nadugadhika'.

  • Forbes unveiled its annual rankings of U.S. universities for 2024, with Princeton University once again claiming the top spot for the second consecutive year. The prestigious institution excelled across all 14 evaluation criteria, which include educational excellence, financial aid, and career outcomes. Princeton boasts an acceptance rate of 6 percent, making it one of the most selective universities in the country.
  • The other 9 universities that made the top 10 are Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Yale University, University of California, Berkeley, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University, Rice University and Cornell University.

Odisha Launches PM-USHA Programme to Boost Higher Education

  • Odisha government officially launched the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing the state's higher education sector. The programme was introduced through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the state and the Union Education Ministry, in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan, and state Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj.
  • Under this initiative, the central government will contribute Rs 500 crore towards the development and infrastructure of higher education institutions across Odisha. Minister Pradhan described August 31 as a landmark day for the state's educational landscape, emphasising the programme's alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for the National Education Policy, 2020.
  • The PM-USHA programme is designed to ensure access, equity, and excellence in higher education throughout Odisha.
