Japanese PM Kishida Invites PM Modi to G7 Hiroshima Summit

  • Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida formally invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 Summit 2023 after both had a delegation-level talk in Delhi. Japan is the host country for the G7 summit 2023. The host country for 2022 was Germany.
  • The 49th G7 summit will be held from May 19 to 21, 2023 in Hiroshima, ChÅ«goku, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan.
  • The 2023 summit will be the first summit for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
  • The international Group of Seven (G7) is an intergovernmental political forum consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States; additionally, the European Union (EU) is a "non-enumerated member".
  • It was founded in 1973.

India Participates in the US-led IPEF Negotiating Round in Bali

  • India participated in the US-led Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) negotiations in Bali.
  • Apart from India, negotiators from 13 other countries, including the US, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam also participated in the Bali negotiating round. The first round of negotiations took place in Australia in December 2022. Thereafter, India hosted a special round in February 2023.
  • During negotiations issues related to trade, supply chain, clean economy, fair economy, and supply chains were taken up. India participated in the discussions pertaining to only three pillars, as it decided to be an observer in the trade pillar.

Anuj Singh is New CEO and MD Spencer's Retail

  • Spencer's Retail, which is part of the R. P. Sanjiv Goenka Group, appointed Anuj Singh as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD).
  • Singh was appointed CEO and MD for a period of three years.
  • He has more than two decades of leadership experience in organisations in India, West Asia and Europe. He spent his formative professional years working across sales and marketing roles in the paints, tobacco and beverages sectors. He then spent more than a decade in leadership roles in the beverages and food services industry.

Ambani among Top 10 Billionaires: M3M Hurun Global Rich List

  • According to the 2023 M3M Hurun Global Rich List, despite an erosion of 20 per cent or $21 billion in wealth, Reliance Industries' Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani continues to be at the top 10 wealthiest individuals in the world with a wealth of $82 billion.
  • For the third consecutive year, Ambani retained the wealthiest Asian title.
  • With a 35 per cent decrease or $28 billion in wealth to $53 billion, Gautam Adani & family, of Adani Group slipped to 23rd rank in the world's wealthiest from the last year's second rank.
  • Adani also lost the second richest Asian title in 2023.

Asia's Largest 4-metre Liquid Mirror Telescope Inaugurated in Uttarakhand

  • Asia's largest 4-meter International Liquid Mirror Telescope was launched in Devasthal in Uttarakhand. The observatory will explore the deep celestial sky, classifying objects from asteroids to supernovae, and space debris.
  • The telescope was inaugurated by Science & Technology minister Jitendra Singh, who said that the inauguration of the observatory places India at a different and much higher level of ability to study the mysteries of the skies and astronomy and to share the same with the rest of the world.
  • The International Liquid Mirror Telescope has a 4-meter-diameter rotating mirror made up of a thin layer of liquid mercury to collect and focus light. The metal mercury is in liquid form at room temperature, which is highly reflective and designed to survey the strip of the sky passing overhead each night.
  • The telescope was designed and built by the Advanced Mechanical and Optical Systems (AMOS) Corporation and the Centre Spatial de Lie'ge in Belgium.

Sarabjot Singh Clinches Air Pistol Gold in Shooting World Cup

  • India's Sarabjot Singh won the men's air pistol gold in the ISSF Pistol/Rifle World Cup to open the host country's medal account on the first day of competitions.
  • It was double delight for India as teenage shooter Varun Tomar also bagged a bronze.
  • Sarabjot, the 2021 junior world champion in the team and mixed team categories, defeated Azerbaijan's Ruslan Lunev 16-0 in the gold-medal match in the first final of the World Cup.

'World Trade Centre' to Come Up In Kolkata's Salt Lake: Merlin Group

  • The World Trade Centre Association and real estate developer, Merlin Group, entered into an agreement for developing a World Trade Centre in Kolkata spread across 3.5 million square feet.
  • The License Agreement for the project was duly executed between Scott Wang, vice president, World Trade Centre Association (WTCA), Asia Pacific region, and Sushil Mohta, chairman along with Saket Mohta, managing director of Merlin Group, Kolkata,. The investment in the under-construction project located in Salt Lake, West Bengal is pegged at around Rs. 1,500 crore.
  • The proposed World Trade Centre, he added, would contribute significantly to the state exchequer and would create 30,000 jobs.
  • The oldest World Trade Centre in India is in Mumbai. There are Centres in Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi, Noida, Pune, among others.

PM Narendra Modi Unveils Bharat 6G Vision Document

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a 6G vision document and said that initiatives for 6G within six months of the 5G rollout showed India's confidence.
  • The 'Bharat 6G' vision document unveiled by PM Modi states 6G will offer speed up to 1 terabit per second, which is 1,000 times more than the top speed of 5G.
  • The document was prepared by Technology Innovation Group on 6G (TIG-6G) constituted in November 2021. Its members are from ministries, departments, research and development institutions, academia, standardisation bodies, telecom service providers and industry.

Former Nagaland Minister Y. M. Yollow Passes Away

  • Former Nagaland minister Y. M. Yollow passed away in Delhi following a prolonged illness. He was 53.
  • CM Rio described Yollow as an energetic and promising leader with deep passion for politics.
  • The former NPF MLA from Wakching assembly constituency was given the portfolio of Forest, Environment and Climate Change in the previous government, after his party extended support to the ruling NDPP-BJP.
  • Due to his ill health, Yollow had not contested the state election in 2023.

World Meteorological Day

  • World Meteorological Day is observed every year on March 23 to commemorate the formal establishment of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in 1950. The day highlights the essential role that 'National Meteorological and Hydrological Services' (NMHS) play in the safety and wellbeing of the society.
  • The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), an organization of the United Nations, was created on March 23, 1950 to replace the International Meteorological Organization. It began operations in 1951 to coordinate member nation in the fields of meteorology, operational hydrology, and Earth sciences for the security of their population. The first World Meteorological Day was held on March 23, 1961.
  • World Meteorological Day has a different theme each year and the theme for 2023 was 'The Future of Weather, Climate and Water across Generations.'

Martyrs' Day or Shaheed Diwas

  • Martyrs' Day or Shaheed Diwas is observed on several dates in India to remember the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country. March 23 is celebrated as Martyrs' Day to commemorate the martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Shivram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar who were hanged to death by the Britishers.
  • Although this day is not a recognised holiday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann declared it as the gazetted holiday in the state.
  • Martyrs' Day is recognised nationally on January 30 to mark the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948, by Nathuram Godse.

Aditya Birla Group Chairman K. M. Birla Receives Padma Bhushan Award

  • Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla, the recipient of Padma Bhushan this year (2023), is the fourth in the extended Birla family to be conferred the nation's highest civilian honours.
  • Birla was conferred the Padma Bhushan, the country's third highest civilian award by President Droupadi Murmu.
  • His great grandfather GD Birla was a recipient of Padma Vibhushan in 1957 and his mother Rajashree Birla was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2011.
  • GP Birla, cousin of Kumar Mangalam Birla's grandfather BK Birla, was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2006.

Luis Caffarelli Wins Abel Prize for Mathematics

  • The Abel Prize for mathematics was awarded to Argentine-American Luis Caffarelli, an expert in partial differential equations, which can explain phenomena ranging from how water flows to population growth.
  • A professor at the University of Texas, Caffarelli was honoured for his seminal contributions to regularity theory for nonlinear partial differential equations.
  • The previous recipient of the prize was U.S. mathematician Dennis Sullivan for his research into topology and chaos theory.
  • The Abel Prize is awarded annually by the King of Norway to one or more outstanding mathematicians. It is named after the Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel and directly modelled after the Nobel Prizes. It comes with a monetary award of 7.5 million Norwegian kroner.
  • The first actual Abel Prize was awarded in 2003.

ICAR and WB Host International Conference on Blended Learning in Agriculture Education

  • Indian Council of Agriculture Research and World Bank jointly hosted International Conference on Blended Learning Ecosystem for Higher Education in Agriculture 2023. The conference was held from March 21 to March 23, 2023 as a part of the National Agricultural Higher Education Project's (NAHEP) Resilient Agricultural Education System (RAES) development initiative.
  • The NAHEP initiative has more than ten academic partners from around the world representing over ten countries deliberating on the best strategies in blended teaching and learning in agricultural education. NAHEP is a five-year project initiated in 2018 with an aim to transform agricultural higher education.
  • The 3-day conference was organised to identify the best strategies in blended teaching and learning, Technologies for Blended Learning, Sustainability in the Blended Learning Ecosystem, Building Stakeholder Capacities to Navigate in a Blended Teaching – Learning Ecosystem and Contemporary Curriculum for Agricultural Education.

QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023: IIT-Delhi Enters Top 50 Club

  • The Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi entered the list of top 50 institutions for engineering in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023.
  • As many as 44 programmes offered by Indian higher education institutions in different disciplines have figured in the top 100 globally. Last year, 35 Indian programmes made it to the top 100.
  • The rankings provide independent comparative analysis on the performance of more than 15,700 individual programmes taken by students at 1,594 universities in 93 locations across the world, across 54 academic disciplines and five broad faculty areas.

RBI's Data Centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute to Come up in Bhubaneswar

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das laid the foundation stone for establishment of a "Greenfield Data Centre' and 'Enterprise Computing & Cybersecurity Training Institute' in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
  • The new Data Centre and the Enterprise Computing & Cybersecurity Training Institute will cater to the emerging requirements of the RBI and the financial sector.
  • Das acknowledged the critical role played by technology in supporting the activities of the financial sector and the RBI over the years.

CAPA India Aviation Summit

  • Indian aviation industry leaders gathered in Delhi for the CAPA India Aviation Summit 2023. This is the first time after 2019 that CAPA organised this summit. The event drew top executives from Air India, Spice Jet, Vistara, and Akasa Air.
  • Campbell Wilson, the CEO of Air India, kicked off the event with an update on the airline's plans.

SC Collegium Recommends Names of 4 District Judges for Appointment as Madras HC Judges

  • The Supreme Court collegium recommended to the centre the names of four district judges for appointment as judges of the Madras High Court. The four judges, whose names were recommended for elevation to the High Court by the Supreme Court collegium for the first time, are R. Sakthivel, P. Dhanabal, Chinnasamy Kumparappan and K. Rajasekar.
  • The collegium also told the centre to notify the names of R. John Sathyan and Ramaswamy Neelakandan, whose names were given in the collegium's previous recommendations in January 2023, for appointment to the High Court.
