S. Jaishankar Meets British Counterpart Cleverly, Discusses Ukraine War

  • The Ukraine conflict and the situation in Indo-Pacific figured prominently in talks between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and visiting British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.
  • Cleverly arrived in India on Friday on a two-day visit primarily to attend a special meeting of the UN Security Council Counter Terrorism Committee. 
  • It is the first visit by a top-ranking official from Britain after Rishi Sunak took charge as the UK's first Indian-origin prime minister on Tuesday.
  • During the visit, the British foreign secretary announced further collaboration between the UK and India through British International Investment. 
  • This included 11 million Pound of UK funding invested in Kinara Capital, a woman-led fintech company, according to the British High Commission.

PM Modi Speaks to Qatar's Amir to Celebrate 50 Yrs of Diplomatic Ties

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday spoke to Qatar's Amir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani as the two leaders agreed to jointly celebrate the 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2023. 
  • While thanking Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for his Diwali greetings, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday conveyed his best wishes to the leader for a successful FIFA World Cup, which is scheduled to kick off from November 20. 
  • The first FIFA World Cup to be held in the Middle East and the Arab world will kick off on November 20, bringing fans from the region and across the world together in a compact and modern setting. The World Cup is scheduled to be held from November 20 to December 18.

Jair Bolsonaro Becomes First Sitting President in Brazil to Lose Re-Election Bid

  • Brazilian voters narrowly decided against a second term for far-right President Jair Bolsonaro at national elections on Oct. 30, opting instead for the return of leftwing former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who took 50.9% of the vote against Bolsonaro's 49.1%, according to the official tally. 
  • The result is a stunning political comeback for Lula—as the 77-year-old president-elect is universally known. 
  • Lula left office in 2010 with an 83% approval rating, after overseeing an economic boom and a jump in living standards for poorer Brazilians.
  • But in 2017, federal prosecutors implicated Lula in a vast corruption scheme and sent him to prison on charges of accepting a bribe. 
  • He, and Brazil's left, have always denied the allegations, and, in 2021, Brazil's Supreme Court overturned his conviction, ruling that his right to a fair trial had been compromised. 
  • That cleared him to run for president again this year.

  • Dabur India to acquire 51 percent stake in Badshah Masala in a Rs. 587.52 crore deal. Dabur India marks its entry into the fast-growing spices and seasoning category. 
  • The company signed definitive transaction agreements to acquire 51 percent shareholding of Badshah Masala Pvt. Ltd. 
  • Badshah Masala Pvt. Ltd. is a firm engaged in manufacturing, marketing, and export of ground spices, blended spices, and seasoning. 
  • The acquisition is in line with the company's strategic intent of entering into new adjacent categories in the food space.

RBI Revokes Authorisation Certificate of Chennai-Based GI Technology

  • The Reserve Bank on Thursday said it has revoked Certificate of Authorisation of Chennai-based GI Technology Private Limited over governance concerns in the company. 
  • The company is in business of issuance and operation of prepaid payment instruments. 
  • "Governance concerns and non-compliance with regulatory requirements" are the reasons for revocation of Certificate of Authorisation (CoA), the central bank said in a statement. 
  • Following the revocation of the CoA, GI Technology cannot transact the business of issuance and operation of prepaid payment instruments, it said.

Google Buys Artificial Intelligence Avatar Startup 'Alter' for $100 mn

  • Tech giant Google has acquired Alter, an artificial intelligence (AI) avatar startup that was working on using AI to generate avatars for social media users and brands to express their virtual identity. 
  • According to TechCrunch, Google buys the startup for about $100 million in an effort to improve its content game and compete with TikTok. 
  • The acquisition was completed about two months ago, but the company is yet to make a public announcement.
  • Alter started as Facemoji, a platform that offered plug-and-play technology for helping game and App developers add avatar systems to their Apps. 
  • Among its investors are Play Ventures, Roosh Ventures and Twitter, which invested $3 million in the startup. 
  • Later Facemoji rebranded as Alter.

RIL Becomes First Indian Company to Post Earnings Call on Metaverse

  • Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) posted the proceedings of its Q2 FY 2022-23 earnings call on the metaverse. 
  • This is the first time in the history of corporate India that a company has used metaverse to engage with its stakeholders.
  • The RIL metaverse was produced in partnership with GMetri, a no-code metaverse creation platform. 
  • One doesn't need to wear an AR/VR headgear to access it. Using it, analysts across the world tracking the company can toggle with slides and graphics placed on different screens as per the multiple buckets in the results presentation. 
  • They can also download the RIL Q2 22-23 media release and the transcript of the media and analyst call in PDF formats.

Saudi Arabia Wins Bid to Host 2029 Asian Winter Games at NEOM:

  • Saudi Arabia said on Tuesday it has won a bid to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games at a planned mountain resort in the Gulf Arab state's $500 billion flagship NEOM project. 
  • The project is expected to be completed in 2026 and will offer outdoor skiing, a man-made freshwater lake and a nature reserve, according to the project's website. 
  • "With the unlimited support by the Saudi leadership & HRH Crown Prince to the sport sector we are proud to announce we have won the bid to host AWG TROJENA2029 as the first country in west Asia," Sports Minister Prince Abdulaziz Bin Turki Al-Faisal said on Twitter.

Akanksha Vyavahare Creates Three New National Records at Khelo India Weightlifting Meet

  • Akanksha Vyavahare, who is a Maharashtra-based weightlifter has created three new national records in the 40 kg weight category at the Khelo India National Ranking Women's Weightlifting Tournament.
  • Akanksha Vyavahare was also a part of the Target Olympics Podium Scheme and created records in snatch, clean and jerk, and total.
  • Akanksha has improved her existing snatch national record by lifting 60 kg.
  • She recorded 71 kg in the clean jerk and the process registered a total lift of 131 kg.
  • The opening ceremony of the Khelo India National Ranking Women's Weightlifting Tournament was felicitated by Tokyo Olympics Silver medalist Mirabai Chanu.
  • Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in Phase 1 of the Khelo India Weightlifting Tournament in Himachal Pradesh.

Team India Shows Nerves of Steel to Defeat Australia and Win Sultan of Johor Cup

  • The Indian Junior Men's Hockey Team put in a fine display on a thriller evening against Australia, to win the 10th Sultan of Johor Cup after a tense penalty shootout.
  • The two teams were tied at 1-1 in regulation time, following which 9 penalty shots were needed to decide the winner. 
  • India edged the shootout 5-4 and won their third Sultan of Johor Cup title. The top-scorer at the 10th Sultan of Johor Cup was India's Sharda Nand Tiwari with 7 goals to his name, and the Player of the Match in the Final against Australia was Sudeep Chirmako.

Election Commission of India to Host Two-Day International Conference on 'Role, Framework & Capacity of Election Management Bodies' from October 31

  • The Election Commission (EC) will host a two-day international conference on the 'Role, Framework & Capacity of Election Management Bodies (EMBs)' in the capital starting Monday.
  • The EC leads the Cohort on Election Integrity, established following the 'Summit for Democracy' held in December last year; the two-day conference to be held on Monday and Tuesday will be inaugurated by Chief Election Commissioner of India Rajiv Kumar and its concluding session will be chaired by Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey.

Saras Food Festival 2022 Inaugurated by the Union Minister Faggan Singh Kulaste

  • The Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Steel, Faggan Singh Kulaste inaugurated the "Saras Food Festival 2022" in New Delhi on 28 October, 2022. 
  • The Food Festival has been organided by the Union Rural Development Ministry from 28th October to 10th November, 2022 in New Delhi. 
  • Women from self-help groups (SHG), formed under the flagship program 'National Rural Livelihoods Mission' of the Union Ministry of Rural Development are participating in this festival. The festival intends to have at least 25% of all sales by women self-help groups through e-commerce portals annually. 
  • The Ministry has already signed agreements with e-commerce giants like Amazon, and Flipkart and there have been efforts by States/Union Territories in getting SHGs products registered on e-commerce platforms. e.g, Flipkart, Amazon and Meesho etc.

Non-Compliance of Ambulance Rule Will Entail Fines up to Rs. 1 Lakh

  • Ambulance deployment agencies on highways will be fined for their failure to provide ambulance service to shift accident victims to nearest hospitals within the "golden hour", reports Dipak Dash. 
  • The 'golden hour' is the period immediately after an injury during which there is maximum likelihood that prompt medical attention and surgical intervention will prevent death of the victim.
  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Wednesday issued an order to enforce these provisions in its bid to "strengthen incident management and enforcement system". 
  • According to the circular, ambulances deployed by the civil contractor or concessionaire must transport accident victims to the nearest medical care centre for treatment without any delay.

Indian Navy Hosted Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise Simbex 2022

  • Indian Navy is hosting 29th edition of Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) from 26th to 30th October, 2022 at Visakhapatnam
  • It is being conducted in two phases: Harbour Phase at Visakhapatnam from 26 to 27 October, 2022 followed by Sea Phase in Bay of Bengal from 28 to 30 October, 2022
  • SIMBEX exercise began in 1994 and were initially known as Exercise Lion King.
  • RSS Stalwart and RSS Vigilance (Victory Class Corvette) from Singapore will join the exercise.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Virtually Launches Two Helipads in Ladakh, Unveils Rs. 2,180 crore Infra Projects:

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday dedicated to the nation 75 infrastructure projects including bridges, roads and helipads built at a cost of Rs. 2,180 crore in strategically key areas of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim among others.
  • He inaugurated the projects at a function held at the Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldi (DS-DBO) road that provides connectivity to India's northernmost outpost of Daulat Beg Oldi in eastern Ladakh.
  • The highlight of the event was the onsite inauguration of 120-metre-long 'class-70 Shyok Setu' on the DS-DBO Road at an altitude 14,000 feet.
  • The bridge will be of strategic importance as it will facilitate logistics movement of the armed forces.
  • Other projects inaugurated virtually by Singh included two helipads, one each in Hanle and Thakung, in Eastern Ladakh.

Indian Navy Participates in Maiden Trilateral Exercise with Mozambique and Tanzania

  • The Defence Ministry has informed that the first edition of the India-Mozambique-Tanzania Trilateral Exercise commenced at Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania on 27th October, 2022. 
  • The Indian Navy has participated in the Maiden Trilateral Exercise with Mozambique and Tanzania. 
  • Indian Navy is represented by the guided missile frigate, INS Tarkash, a Chetak Helicopter, and MARCOS.
  • The exercise has three main objectives including capability development to address common threats through training and sharing of best practices, Enhancing interoperability, and strengthening maritime cooperation. 
  • The exercise has been held till 29th October, 2022 which also includes the Harbour and sea phases. 
  • In the harbor phase, various capacity-building activities are involved which include visit, board, search, and seizure. 
  • Small arms training, joint diving operations, damage control and fire fighting exercises, and cross-deck visits are scheduled in the capacity building activities.

  • Director of many 80s and 90s hits, Esmayeel Shroff is no more. 
  • The veteran Bollywood director expired at Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani hospital in Mumbai following an illness. 
  • He was 62 years old. Esmayeel Shroff was reportedly admitted almost a month ago after suffering a heart attack. 
  • Esmayeel hailed from Andhra Pradesh.

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas

  • National Unity Day or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is celebrated in India on 31 October. It was introduced by the Government of India in 2014. The day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who had a major role in the political integration of India.
  • The day was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 with the theme of Run for Unity. Observing this day provides strength and resilience for the nation to hold on to unity, integrity, and security.

World Cities Day

  • World Cities Day brings Urban October to an end on 31st October each year and was first celebrated in 2014. 
  • As with World Habitat Day, a global observance is held in a different city each year and the day focuses on a specific theme. 
  • A different city hosts the event each year. This year's global observance is planned in Shanghai, China under the theme "Act Local to Go Global". On December 27, 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) established World Cities Day through a resolution. 
  • The first celebration took place on October 31, 2014. The second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements in 1976 influenced the UNGA's decision to establish World Cities Day.

  • World Psoriasis Day is observed every year on October 29th to make the general public aware of the important facts related to psoriasis and this disease and its treatment. 
  • In the year 2022, World Psoriasis Day is being observed with the theme of "Unloading Psoriatic Disease".
  • Psoriasis is a serious abnormal skin condition in which red and white scaly patches start developing on the patient's skin.

Mawmluh Cave in Meghalaya is One of the First 100 Geoheritage Sites Listed by UNESCO

  • Mawmluh Caves located in the East Khasi Hills district has made it to the first 100 geological heritage sites listed under International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) by UNESCO. 
  • The first 100 sites were chosen from 56 countries. The full list will be presented at the IUGS's 60th anniversary event, which will take place in Zumaia, Spain.
  • It is the fourth longest cave in the Indian subcontinent and is referred to locally as Krem Mawmluh. The word "krem" in the local Khasi language means cave. 
  • Therria sandstone, thick dolomite, Sylhet limestone are among the layers that make up this intricate sub-horizontal network of passages. 
  • The cave, which is 7.2 kilometres long, has numerous entrances. It is known for stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations.
