7th ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting Held under Co-chairmanship of Narendra Singh Tomar

  • The 7th ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting (AIMMAF) on Agriculture and Forestry was held virtually. The Meeting was co-chaired by Dr. Phet Phomphiphak, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of Lao PDR and Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare of India. Agriculture Ministers of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam also participated in the meeting.
  • Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, in his opening remarks during the meeting, reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of keeping ASEAN at the centre of India's Act East Policy. He also emphasised on mutually close regional cooperation with ASEAN to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth for agricultural development in the region. Referring to the importance of millet (nutritional-cereals) as a nutritious food and the international nutritional-cereal year 2023, Tomar urged the ASEAN member countries to support the efforts of India in increasing the production, processing, value addition and consumption of millets.

North Korea Fires Ballistic Missile Towards Sea

  • North Korea fired a ballistic missile towards the sea, as its rival South Korea was wrapping up an annual military drill that the North views as an invasion rehearsal.
  • As per South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missile flew towards North Korea's eastern waters but gave no further details including how far the weapon flew.
  • The launch, the latest in a series of weapons tests by North Korea in recent weeks, came on the final day of South Korea's annual 12-day "Hoguk" field exercises, which also involved an unspecified number of US troops this year.

Apple Announces New Clean Energy Investments

  • Apple said that it would make fresh investments to set up solar and wind projects in Europe and called on its suppliers to decarbonise operations related to the production of iPhones and other products. The company in 2020 had pledged to remove carbon emissions from its entire business, including products and its sprawling supply chain – which spans from Vietnam to Brazil – by 2030.
  • The iPhone maker will now require its supply partners to report on progress on carbon neutrality goals, specifically Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions reductions, related to the production of Apple products and will audit their progress annually.

Coca-Cola's Sprite Becomes Billion-dollar Brand in Indian Market

  • Global soft drinks major Coca-Cola's lemon and lime-flavoured soft drink Sprite became a billion-dollar brand in the Indian market.
  • The company recorded a strong volume growth in its India business in the third quarter of 2022, helped by its sparkling soft drinks portfolio and fruit drink brand Maaza.
  • India is the fifth largest market for Coca-Cola globally.

Jakson Green to Invest Rs. 22,400 cr in Green Hydrogen Project in Rajasthan

  • Jakson Green to invest Rs. 22,400 crore to set up green hydrogen and green ammonia project in Rajasthan. The Jakson Green company signed an MoU with the Government of Rajasthan to this effect. Jakson Green will set up a 3,65,000 tons per annum Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia plant along with an integrated hybrid renewable power complex in phase wise manner.
  • The project initiated by Jakson Green and Rajasthan Government is expected to generate over 32,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities across various phases of the scale-up.
  • The MoU was signed by Vish Iyer, Global Chief Commercial Officer, Jakson Green, and Bhaskar S. Sawant, Principal Secretary of Energy to the Government of Rajasthan.
  • The government of Rajasthan would facilitate Jakson Green in obtaining necessary registrations, approvals, and clearance, and provide incentives.

Indian Bank Offers Bouquet of Digital Products under Project Wave

  • Public sector lender Indian Bank rolled out six new digital initiatives under 'Project WAVE' for enhancing customer experience through integrated services on its digital platform.
  • The new products were rolled out by the bank MD & CEO S.L. Jain in the presence ED Imran Amin Siddiqui and Universal Sompo General Insurance Co. Ltd., MD & CEO Sharad Mathur in Chennai.

Dehradun to Host 3-day "Akash for Life" Space Conference

  • The "Akash for Life" a 3-day space conference will showcase the blending of traditional and modern knowledge through an extended integration of all schools of thought. The decision was taken by the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science and Technology, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Earth Sciences, MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, and Jitendra Singh. The event is scheduled to be held at Dehradun from November 5 to 7, 2022.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for the integration of science and technological development within society in a way that places science in a position to address the needs of the common citizen.
  • The conclave aims to expose the youth of India to the wisdom of ancient sciences along with modern scientific advancements.

Gujarat Declared As 100% 'Har Ghar Jal' State

  • Gujarat was declared a 'Har Ghar Jal' state, meaning all households in rural areas have access to safe drinking water through taps, ensuring that 'No One is Left Out'. As per the government data, all 91,73,378 houses in the state now have water connections.
  • Water Supply Department, Govt. of Gujarat said that it is a marvelous day in the history of Gujarat as it became 100% tap water connected. Every rural household is now connected with individual FHTC that provides safe, adequate and regular drinking water.
  • Jal Jeevan Mission is a flagship programme of Government of India which was announced from the ramparts of Red Fort by Prime Minister on August 15, 2019. The mission aims to make provision of potable tap water supply in adequate quantity, of prescribed quality and on regular and long-term basis to every rural household of the country by 2024.

Amritanandamayi Appointed Chair of Civil Society of G20 Summit

  • Spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma) was appointed the Chair of the country's Civil 20 (C20), an official engagement group of the Group of 20 (G20), by the Union Government.
  • The G20 is the premier inter-governmental forum for the world's developed and emerging economies to address financial stability on a global basis. The C20 is its platform for civil-society organisations (CSOs) to bring forth non-government and non-business voices to the G20 leaders.
  • India will assume the Presidency of the G20 for one year from December 1, 2022 to November 30, 2023. The pinnacle of events is September 9-10, 2023 when the G20 Leaders' Summit will take place in New Delhi at the level of Heads of State and Government, it said. But in advance, India will host more than 200 meetings across the country, an endeavour that involves intense work by ministerial meetings, working groups, and engagement groups.

Tata and Airbus to Make C-295MW Transport Aircraft for IAF in Vadodara

  • Moving to achieve a milestone in the highly competitive aviation industry and boosting its Make-in-India defence programme, the government announced that a transport aircraft manufacturing facility for the Indian Air Force will come up in Vadodara.
  • To start with, 40 of the 56 C-295MW transport aircraft being procured from Airbus Defence and Space SA, Spain, will be manufactured at the new facility in Vadodara.
  • In September 2021, after the Cabinet Committee on Security approved the procurement of 56 C-295MW transport aircraft from Airbus Defence and Space SA, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract for acquisition of the aircraft with associated equipment.
  • Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar said that as part of the contract, 16 aircraft will be delivered in flyaway condition and 40 will be manufactured in India by the Indian aircraft contractor, Tata consortium of Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) led by TASL.

International Animation Day

  • International Animation Day is celebrated on October 28 every year since 2002. It was in this year when the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA) declared International Animation Day (IAD) as a worldwide occasion to commend the speciality of animation. This day is celebrated in more than 50 distinct nations throughout the world. IAD was started by ASIFA, an individual from UNESCO.
  • The day is celebrated to commemorate the first public animation performance, Theatre Optique at the Musée Grévin in Paris. The moving picture technology utilised in the animated performance was developed by Charles-Emile Reynaud.

President Droupadi Murmu Presents Silver Trumpet and Trumpet Banner to the President's Bodyguard

  • The President of India Droupadi Murmu presented the Silver Trumpet and Trumpet Banner to the President's Bodyguard at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • The President appreciated PBG for their excellent military traditions, professionalism and discipline in all their tasks.
  • President Murmu expressed confidence that PBG will strive with dedication, discipline and valour, to maintain the highest traditions of Rashtrapati Bhavan and be an ideal role model for other Regiments of the Indian Army.
  • The President's Bodyguard is the oldest regiment in the Indian Army, having been raised as the Governor-General's Bodyguard (later the Viceroy's Bodyguard) in 1773. As the President of India's own Guard, it has the unique distinction of being the only military unit of the Indian Army that is privileged to carry the President's Silver Trumpet and Trumpet Banner. This distinction was conferred on the President's Bodyguard in 1923 by the then Viceroy, Lord Reading, on the occasion of the Bodyguard completing 150 years of service. Each succeeding Viceroy, thereafter, presented the Silver Trumpet and Trumpet Banner to the Bodyguard.

Jadavpur University Only State-run Institute in QS Sustainability World Ranking

  • Jadavpur University earned the distinction of being the only state-run varsity from India to feature in the QS Sustainability World Ranking 2023.
  • A total of 700 institutes featured in the list, of which 15 were from India.
  • A JU spokesperson said that the ranking is based on sustainability performance focusing on environmental and social impacts of the higher education institutes and has considered metrics like sustainable education, sustainable research, equality, knowledge exchange and impact of education.
  • Jadavpur University was at overall eighth position from India.
  • QS World University Rankings is one of the top international rankings measuring the popularity and performance of universities all over the world.

Kenya's Samburu Warriors Still Practise a Rock Art Tradition that Tells their Stories

  • The Samburu people in northern Kenya's Marsabit county are pastoralists. They migrate from place to place in search of pasture and water for their cattle, goats, sheep and camels.
  • As part of their lifestyle, Samburu boys go through an initiation period when they live in rock shelters, learning how to take care of their animals and how to become warriors.
  • During this time the young warriors, called lmurran, express themselves by painting images on the rocks. This is one of very few ongoing rock art traditions in the world, but it has gained almost no attention among rock art researchers.
  • Rock art has been made for more than 60,000 years and it exists on every continent except the Antarctic.
  • Papua New Guinea and parts of Australia are among the few other places where new rock art is still being created, maintained or repainted like at the Samburu sites.

Kerala Set to Become Women-friendly Tourism Destination

  • With a view to becoming a women-friendly tourism destination, Kerala launched a project to encourage the participation of women in all tourism activities and attract more women tourists to the state.
  • The 'women-friendly tourism' project, an initiative of the State Responsible Tourism Mission (RT Mission) aims to establish women-friendly tourism centres and empower women. The project will be implemented ensuring the participation of women from all sections of society.
  • Through the project, the RT Mission aims to create a network of women's units and tourism centres manned by women. The project will also ensure that tourism destinations in the State are fulfilling the needs of women tourists. As part of taking the initiative to all districts, the mission will provide training to selected women to work as tour coordinators, storytellers, community tour leaders, auto/taxi drivers (guest Handling), homestay operators etc.
