Rishi Sunak the UK's New Prime Minister

  • British politician Rishi Sunak was elected Conservative leader and became the Prime Minister, after being invited to form government by King Charles III. Rival Penny Mordaunt failed to secure the necessary 100 nominations from her fellow MPs, following which she backed out paving the way for Sunak to become the first Indian-origin Prime Minister of United Kingdom.
  • He lost to Liz Truss in September, but she resigned six weeks later. In the latest leadership contest, Sunak racked up the support of his fellow MPs early, and fast. He crossed the 100 nominations he needed long before the deadline - including from MPs that had previously backed Truss or Boris Johnson.

Pakistan, China to Launch Three New CPEC-like Corridor Projects

  • Pakistan and China are set to start three new corridors in November, in addition to the multiple billion dollars China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), to strengthen bilateral ties.
  • The formal launch of the projects could take place during Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visit to China next month following the invitation by President Xi Jinping.
  • These projects, which include health and digital corridors, were announced by Pakistan's Ambassador to China Moinul Haq while speaking to the China Economic Net (CEN) in Beijing.

Delhi Govt. Kicks off Campaign 'Diye jalao, Patake Nahin' for Green Diwali

  • Delhi government has launched the 'Diye Jalao, Patake Nahin' (light up lamps, not firecrackers) campaign at Central Park in New Delhi. The Delhi government lit 51,000 diyas at Central Park in Connaught Place to mark the launch of its campaign for a pollution-free Diwali. The campaign aims at promoting a quieter and pollution-free Diwali.
  • Volunteers took part in the Delhi government's campaign for a pollution-free Diwali. Diwali is one of the biggest festivals in India. People across the country mark the festival in special ways by making rangolis, organising Diwali parties and preparing delicious dishes and sweets. However, air and noise pollution have been a cause of concern on this auspicious occasion. Bursting crackers is a major cause for pollution.
  • Diye Jalao, the Patake Nahi campaign was launched in the city to raise awareness among people. Some people think that Diwali cannot be celebrated without bursting crackers but one should keep in mind that it is a festival of light. People can celebrate Diwali in many ways to protect themselves from air pollution.

ICICI Bank Re-appoints Sandeep Bakhshi as MD and CEO

  • ICICI Bank's board of directors re-appointed Sandeep Bakshi as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for a period of three years.
  • The tenure Sandeep Bakshi was till October 3, 2023. The re-appointment period is from October 4, 2023 to October 3, 2026, which is subject to approval from Reserve Bank of India, and the shareholders of ICICI Bank.
  • He was appointed as the banks's MD and CEO since October 15, 2018. He has served as Wholetime Director and the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the bank, prior to his appointment as MD and CEO.
  • Bakhshi has been with the ICICI Group for 36 years and has handled various assignments across the group in ICICI Limited, ICICI Lombard General Insurance, ICICI Bank and ICICI Prudential Life Insurance.

PNB's Goel Re-elected as IBA Chairman

  • The Managing Committee of the Indian Banks' Assocation (IBA) re-elected A. K. Goel, Managing Director & CEO, Punjab National Bank, as the Chairman of the Associaion for the term 2022-23.
  • The Committee also elected three Deputy Chairmen: Dinesh Kumar Khara, Chairman, State Bank of India (re-elected); A. S. Rajeev, MD & CEO, Bank of Maharashtra; and Madhav Nair, Country Head & CEO, Mashreq Bank PSC. N. Kamakodi, Managing Director & CEO, City Union Bank, was elected as the Honorary Secretary.
  • IBA was set up in 1946 to look after the interests of the banking industry. The vision of the Association is to work proactively for the growth of a healthy, professional and forward-looking banking and financial services industry, in a manner consistent with public good.

IndusInd Bank Raised USD 150 Mn Loan from US DFC

  • IndusInd Bank executed an agreement with the United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) for a $150 million loan to expand its microfinance portfolio.
  • The private sector lender would use the proceeds to lend to women borrowers in rural communities of Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.
  • IndusInd Bank aims at boosting access to finance for women borrowers, as well as uplifting the livelihoods of these women and their families.
  • The bank had acquired Bharat Financial Inclusion in 2019, which kick-started its journey in microfinance. The loan from DFC will help support the bank in increasing its reach and enhance lending to women in the targeted states.

IIT-Madras and NASA Researchers Study Microbes on Space Station

  • The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) researchers studied the interactions between microbes in the International Space Station (ISS).
  • A key finding is that a microbe that resides on the ISS, was found to be beneficial to various other microorganisms but hampered the growth of a fungus.
  • The study would help devise strategies for the disinfection of space stations to minimise any potential impact of microbes on the health of astronauts.
  • "Crews, during spaceflight, may have altered immunity and limited access to terrestrial medical facilities. Therefore, studying the microbes inhabiting the space station becomes important to understand the risks associated with short-term and long-term space travel on the health of astronauts," the IIT-Madras said in a press release.
  • The present study was inspired by the earlier observations of the dominance of Klebsiella pneumoniae, a bacteria, on the surfaces of the ISS.

ISRO Launches 36 Satellites in 1st Commercial Mission

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation successfully launched its heaviest rocket Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM-3) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, putting in orbit 36 satellites of UK-based OneWeb satellite communications company.
  • The launch of the LVM-3 — with its largest ever payload of 5,796 kg also marked India's entry into the global commercial launch service market.
  • All the 36 satellites were injected into the orbits around 75 minutes after the rocket blasted off from the Sriharikota.
  • OneWeb is the UK-based customer of New Space India Ltd (NSIL), ISRO's commercial arm, and a global communication network powered from space, enabling internet connectivity for governments and businesses. Bharti Enterprises is one of the major investors in OneWeb.

Indian Shooter Swapnil Kusale Wins India's 3rd Paris 2024 Olympics Quota

  • Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale won India's third Paris 2024 Olympics quota place at the ISSF World Championship in Cairo, Egypt. It was Kusale's fourth-place finish in the men's 50 meter rifle 3 positions event that earned him the quota. Kusale, who shot a qualification score of 593 to qualify for the eight-shooter final at the second spot, was in contention for the gold-medal match too but a low 8.2 in his final shot in the eighth series in the final denied him a medal. He is also an ISSF World Cup gold medalist.

Formula-1 Racing: Max Verstappen Wins US Grand Prix 2022

  • Belgium's Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing won the 2022 Formula 1 Aramco United States Grand Prix 2022 which was held at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, United States (US). With this, he equalled Germany's Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher's record of 13 wins in a Formula 1 season. He defeated the UK's Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes. Hamilton had to settle for second place, with Mercedes' wait for a 2022 victory continuing, while Leclerc salvaged a podium finish for Ferrari as the Italian team mathematically dropped out of contention for the constructors' crown.

Yuvraj Singh Named Brand Ambassador of T20 World Cup for the Blind

  • The Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) announced former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh as its brand ambassador for the 3rd T20 World Cup for the Blind to be held in India in December. Ajay Kumar Reddy B2 (Andhra Pradesh) would lead the Indian team while Venkateswara Rao Dunna – B2 (Andhra Pradesh) would be the vice-captain.
  • The World Cup matches will be held from December 6 to 17. The participating countries for the 3rd T20 World Cup for the Blind are India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
  • The World Cup is an initiative of the Samarthanam Trust for the disabled, which has been organizing this championship since 2012. Samarthanam perceives sports as a medium to improve inclusion and encourage persons with disabilities on various fronts.

Quality Council of India Appoints Jaxay Shah as New Chairman

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed Jaxay Shah, founder chairman of Savvy Group and former chairman of CREDAI as the chairman of the Quality Council of India (QCI) for three years. He succeeded former McKinsey India chief Adil Zainulbhai, who served as the chairman of QCI through three terms for eight years from 2014 to 2022.
  • Jaxay Shah was appointed based on his vast industry experience which shall contribute to further propelling the wheels of Quality, a legacy established by the former Chairpersons of QCI. In addition, he also holds the position of the chairman of the Assocham Western Region Development Council and serves as the Advisor at the PharmEasy Accelerator Program, which offers 1 lakh+ medicine and health products.
  • QCI was established in 1997 through a Cabinet note by the Government of India. QCI is mandated to promote quality in the country through national accreditation of testing, inspection and certification bodies which is internationally recognised, driving third-party assessments across sectors.

India's First 'Migration Monitoring System' Inaugurated in Mumbai

  • India's first 'Migration Monitoring Systems' was inaugurated by the Maharashtra Women and Children Development Minister Mangalprabhat Lodha in Mumbai. The website-based Migration Tracking System would track the movement of vulnerable seasonal migrant beneficiaries. The Migration Monitoring Systems aims to provide information about migrant pregnant women, lactating women, and children.

'Honesty Shops' Launched for School Students in Kerala's Ernakulam

  • Schools in Kerala's Ernakulam district introduced "honesty shops" for students up to Class 12. This initiative was launched by the Student police cadet with the aim of cultivating valuable lessons on trust, truth and integrity for students.
  • There would be no salesperson in these shops and neither would they have a shopkeeper present. Students can choose items they need and drop the money for each item inside the collection box kept on a table. The price list of every object is displayed next to it.
  • The program has been launched in as many as 15 schools in Kerala's Ernakulam district. The shops are open mainly for students up to Class 12.

Govt. Signs Pact with US to Procure MK 54 Torpedo, Expendables

  • The Centre inked a deal with the US government to procure MK 54 torpedo and expendables for the Indian Navy.
  • The Ministry of Defence signed a contract with the US Government under Foreign Military Sale (FMS) for procurement of MK 54 Torpedo and Expendable (Chaff and Flares) for the Indian Navy at a cost of Rs. 423 crore.
  • These weapons are the outfit of P-8I Aircraft which is used for Long range Maritime Surveillance, Anti-Submarine Warfare and Anti-Surface Warfare (ASV).
  • The Indian Navy has a total of 11 P-8I aircraft, which are manufactured by US aerospace company Boeing, in its fleet.

Karnataka Assembly Deputy Speaker Anand Mamani Passes Away

  • Anand Mamani the Deputy Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly, died after suffering from health-related complications.
  • Anand Mamani was a three-time legislator from the Savadatti constituency in the Belagavi district. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru.
  • During the monsoon session of the legislature held in September, he was rushed to a hospital in Chennai as his health deteriorated.
  • Following his demise, the BJP called off its Jana Sankalpa Yatra, which was scheduled to be held at Chittapur and Aland in Kalaburagi district Sunday. The Kittur Utsava in Belagavi district, too, was cancelled.

John Shaw, Husband of Biocon Chief Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Passes Away

  • Biocon executive chairperson Kiran Mazumdar Shaw's husband John Shaw passed away. He was 73.
  • Shaw was the former vice chairman of the Bengaluru-headquartered Biocon Limited.
  • He was an MA (Economics Honours) in History and Political Economy from the University of Glasgow in United Kingdom.
  • He was also the former chairman of Madura Coats Limited and former finance and managing director of Coats Viyella Group.

  • Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal launched "Main Bhi Subhash'' campaign from Leh. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose-INA Trust in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture is organizing a series of events on the occasion of Netaji's 125th Birth Anniversary on January 23, 2023.
  • Namgyal also inaugurated an exhibition on Netaji at Boys Higher Secondary School in Leh. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the Main Bhi Subhash campaign in every nook and corner will create awareness of Netaji's contribution in the freedom fight.

Delhi L-G Launches One-time Property Tax Amnesty Scheme 'SAMRIDDHI 2022-23'

  • Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena launched a one-time property tax amnesty scheme "SAMRIDDHI 2022-23", saying it will provide a major relief to lakhs of residential and commercial property owners in the city.
  • SAMRIDDHI, an acronym for Strengthening and Augmentation of Municipal Revenue for Infrastructure Development in Delhi, will start on October 26 and end on March 31, 2023, with no further extensions.
  • Under the scheme, residential property owners can pay just the principal property tax amount of the current and of the past five years. For commercial properties, owners can pay the principal amount case of the last six years and get a waiver on past pending dues, including penalty and interest.

BHU Researchers Discover a Micro RNA that can Specifically Kill Cancer Cells

  • BHU researchers discovered a Micro RNA that can specifically kill cancer cells and this can be developed into a harmless therapy to cure cervical cancer. The breakthrough came from a team led by Dr. Samarendra Kumar Singh, Assistant Professor, School of Biotechnology, Institute of Science.
  • The BHU research team was conducting a study which found that the viral E6 gene could be suppressed by a human micro-RNA - miR-34a. This killed off only cervical cancerous cells by switching off an onogenic cell cycle factor.
  • This finding is important as it paves the way for a therapy that will target only cervical cancerous cells – normal or non-cancerous cells did not deteriorate in any way in the study.

Satyajit Ray's 'Pather Panchali' Declared Best Indian Film by International Federation of Film Critics

  • Legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray's feature "Pather Panchali" was declared the best Indian film of all time by International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI).
  • The 1955 film received the number one slot in the top ten films in the history of Indian cinema list, which was declared after a poll conducted by the India chapter of FIPRESCI.
  • Based on Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's 1929 Bengali novel of the same name, "Pather Panchali" was Ray's directorial debut. It starred Subir Banerjee, Kanu Banerjee, Karuna Banerjee, Uma Dasgupta, Pinaki Sengupta and Chunibala Devi.

Fee Regulation in Private Medical Colleges: Supreme Court Issues Notice on NMC's Transfer Plea

  • The Supreme Court has issued notice on a petition filed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), seeking transfer of all petitions to either the Supreme Court or any one High Court, challenging the validity of its decision to stipulate the fee of 50 per cent seats in Private Medical Colleges and Deemed Universities at par with the fee of Government Medical Colleges in the respective States and Union Territories.
  • The Bench of Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli passed the order on October 21, noting that the transfer plea, the main petition and the connected matters were to be listed before the Bench on November 4.
  • On the last date of hearing, Justice Chandrachud had suggested Advocate Gaurav Sharma, appearing on behalf of NMC, to file a transfer petition so that the Apex Court could transfer all the matters in this regard to either itself or consolidate them and send to the Delhi High Court or any other High Court for disposal.
  • The NMC then filed the transfer petition, on which the notice was issued.
