U.N. Demands Russia to Reverse Ukraine Annexations
The UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to condemn Russia's "attempted illegal annexation" of four Ukrainian regions and demand that Moscow immediately reverse its actions.
The vote in the 193-member world body was 143-5 with 35 abstentions, a sign of strong global opposition to the seven-month war and Moscow's attempt to grab its neighbour's territory.
It was the strongest support from the General Assembly for Ukraine and against Russia of the four resolutions it has approved since Russian troops invaded Ukraine on February 24.
Coal India to Set Up 1,190 MW Solar Power Plant in Rajasthan, Signs MoU
Coal India Ltd (CIL) will set up a 1,190-MW solar power plant in Bikaner district of Rajasthan.
For this, the CIL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rajasthan Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RUVNL).
The solar plant will be set up in a 2,000-MW solar park being developed by RVUNL in Poogal, Bikaner.
The state government has allotted 4,846 hectare land to develop the park in which the RVUNL will set up its own solar project of 810 MW, and a power project of 1,190 will be set up by the CIL.
Singapore Airlines Confirms Vistara-Air India Merger Discussions
Singapore Airlines (SIA) is engaged in confidential talks with Tata Sons for merging Vistara with Air India, the flagship carrier of the Republic of Singapore informed the stock exchange in the Southeast Asian nation in a first acknowledgement of a possible integration of the two airlines.
"In line with its multi-hub strategy, SIA is currently in confidential discussions with the Tatas to explore a potential transaction in relation to the securities of Vistara and Air India. The discussions seek to deepen the existing partnership between SIA and Tatas and may include a potential integration of Vistara and Air India.
SIA owns 49 per cent stake in Vistara and is among the four airlines run by Tata Group. Others include Air India, Air India Express, and AirAsia India.
Fifteen States among Achievers in Logistics Performance Index 2022
Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Gujarat are among the 15 states and UTs categorised as achievers in the logistics index chart 2022, according to a report released by the Commerce and Industry Ministry.
The index is an indicator of the efficiency of logistical services necessary for promoting exports and economic growth.
Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Puducherry, Sikkim and Tripura are the other states and UT categorised as fast movers in the ranking.
The 15 states and UTs ranked in the aspirers category include Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa and Mizoram.
The report ranked the states on the basis of their logistics ecosystem.
The index aims at enhancing the focus on improving logistics performance across states which is essential for improving the country's trade and reducing transaction cost.
The first logistics report was released in 2018. No ranking was released in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gujarat was at the first position in both 2018 and 2019 ranking lists.
CERT-In and Power-CSIRTs Jointly Conduct Cyber Security Exercise "PowerEX-2022"
Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) in collaboration with Power-CSIRTs (Computer Security Incident Response Teams in Power sector), successfully designed & conducted the Cyber Security Exercise "PowerEX" for 193 invited Power Sector Utilities. The Exercise Planner Team of Power-CSIRTs' officials worked along with CERT-In team on the exercise day as Exercise Coordinators. The Objective of the exercise was to "Recognize, Analyse & Respond to Cyber Incident in IT & OT Systems".
The theme of the exercise was "Defending Cyber induced disruption in IT & OT infrastructure". Exercise "PowerEX" was hosted by CERT-In on its exercise simulation platform. Around 350+ official from various Power Sector Utilities participated in the event. Exercise "PowerEX" was successful in meeting its objectives and helped the participants to learn, practice and respond to cyber security incidents.
Women IPL to Take Place in March with 5 Teams, Max 5 Overseas Players in XI
The much-awaited inaugural edition of Women's IPL will have five teams and is set to take place in March 2023 before the start of men's IPL.
As per a BCCI, the tournament will feature 20 league games with teams to play each other twice. The table toppers will get a direct entry into the final, while the second and third place teams will battle out in the Eliminator.
Each team can have no more than five overseas cricketers in the playing eleven.
Bengaluru Fourth most Expensive Real Estate Market in India: Knight Frank
The constant demand to move to India's Silicon Valley has made Bengaluru the fourth most expensive real estate market, with a 2 per cent annual rise in its position at 28 per cent, a Knight Frank consultancy firm report showed.
On the city-wise data, Mumbai remains the most expensive residential market in the country. Mumbai is the only city whose affordability index is improving at the rate of 4 per cent — from 53 per cent in 2021 to 57 per cent in the third quarter of this year (2022).
All-India Conference of Law Ministers and Law Secretaries Organised by the Ministry of Law and Justice
The Union Ministry of Law and Justice organised an All India Conference of Law Ministers and Law Secretaries to provide a platform for discussion and to help policymakers upgrade the overall legal system.
The conference was held at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat.
The keynote address was delivered by Union Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju.
As per the Ministry of Law and Justice, this initiative would provide a forum for discussion on a variety of topics relating to India's legal system so that policymakers may develop a road map for the country's future. The conference would also provide a platform for exchange of ideas and an opportunity to various States and Union Territories to exchange their best practices.
World Food Day is celebrated every year around the world on October 16. The day is celebrated to mark the anniversary of the founding of Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations in 1945. Many other organisations concerned with food security such as the World Food Programme, International Fund for Agricultural Development also celebrate the day.
The day is marked not only to celebrate the amazing food that we get to eat every day, but to also spread awareness about those who struggle to get even one meal in a day.
The day was first established in November 1979. The idea was suggested by former Hungarian Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr Pal Romany. Since then the day has been celebrated by more than 150 countries around the world.

In a First, Army Day Parade to be Held in Bengaluru on January 15 Next Year
The Indian Army decided to shift the base of the Army Day Parade that is organised in Delhi on January 15 every year to Bengaluru, said Army officials in the know of the matter.
This comes days after the Indian Air Force held its annual flypast and parade from Hindon near Delhi to Chandigarh. The Army Day Parade is held at the Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment and marks the appointment of General K M Cariappa as the first commander-in-chief of the Indian Army. General Cariappa later went on to become India's first field marshal.
The Army Day is celebrated to acknowledge and honour soldiers for their selfless service to the nation. Besides different regiments of the army taking out parades, many soldiers are honoured with bravery awards and medals.
The aim behind the changing the location for the Army Day Parade is to facilitate deeper connections with people all over the country as well as to bring governance closer to the masses.
International Climate Change Bodies Win Humanity Award
A prize worth 1 million euros ($970,000) was awarded to two intergovernmental bodies for their work on climate change.
Organizers of the annual Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity announced that this year's (2022) winners are the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is president of the prize's jury, said that the award would help keep the issue of climate change in the public mind even as Russia's war in Ukraine and its consequences compete for attention.
The IPCC is a U.N. body which since 1998 has encouraged scientific research and supported government efforts to combat climate change.
The prize was created in 2020 by the Lisbon, Portugal-based Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to recognise important contributions toward mitigating and adapting to climate change.
President Droupadi Murmu Inaugurates Tripura State Judicial Academy in Agartala
President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the newly-built Tripura State Judicial Academy and unveiled the model of National Law University's Tripura campus at Narsingarh in Agartala.
She later visited the Central Tea Processing Factory at Durgabari Tea Estate and interacted with the tea garden workers and authorities.
Later President Murmu inaugurated a new MLA hostel at New Capital Complex and launched a slew of projects virtually from the Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan, including a few roads, some schools and student hostels.
Speaking at the event at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan, President Murmu said that the National Law University in Tripura would be the 25th law university in the country and hoped that it would play its role as a premier legal education centre in the country.
Uzbekistan Offers 2000 Medical Seats to Ukraine-returned Indian Students
At the request of the Indian government, Uzbekistan's Medical Higher Educational Institutes (MHEIs) of Ministry of Health of Ukraine is providing 2000 seats to relocate Indian medical students from Ukraine by accepting the Erstwhile MCI and NMC norms (Screening test regulations 2002) and (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate – FMGL Regulations 2021).
The education will be offered at an affordable budget by providing a study-and-stay-at-a-place with Indian food. Uzbekistan will offer two undergraduate medical programs to Indian students: 6 years MD Diploma and 5+1 years MBBS Degree with one year Internship.
CJI Lalit Recuses Himself from Hearing Plea of Ex-CM Karnataka Yediyurappa
Chief Justice of India U.U. Lalit recused himself from hearing a petition filed by Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and former State Industries Minister Murugesh Nirani against the Karnataka High Court order, which allowed restoration of a criminal case against them in the alleged illegal land de-notification case.
After the matter was listed before the Supreme Court Bench headed by the CJI and also comprising Justice Hemant Gupta, Justice Lalit refused to hear the same, stating that he was having some difficulty. He then directed the Registry to list the issue before another Bench, of which he was not a member.
