Tulsi Gabbard Quits Democratic Party

  • Former Congresswoman and the first Hindu American to run for the White House in 2020, Tulsi Gabbard, left the governing Democratic Party, denouncing it as an "elitist cabal of warmongers".
  • Gabbard retired from the House of Representatives last year.
  • Gabbard was the first-ever Hindu to be elected to the US House of Representatives in 2013 from Hawaii, and she was subsequently elected for four consecutive terms.
  • She quit the party ahead of next month's crucial mid-term elections.

UN World Geospatial Congress in Hyderabad

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the United Nations World Geospatial Congress (UNWGIC) 2022 in Hyderabad. The goal of this year's (2022) UNWGIC is to promote a broad dialogue on global geospatial information management with all relevant governments, non-governmental organisations, academia, and the private sector.
  • Geospatial technology can be used to create intelligent maps and models which help to collect geographically referenced data. Decisions based on the value and importance of resources, most of which are limited, can become easy through geospatial technology, according to the UNWGIC website.
  • The theme of UNWGIC 2022 is 'Geo-Enabling the Global Village: No one should be left behind', which focuses on building a community for human data and geography against the three pillars of sustainable development for a shared future and a better world, leaving no one behind within an inclusive and equitable global society.
  • The United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) convened the conference on UNWGIC 2022 and was organised by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. It was hosted by the ministry of science and technology of the government of India.

Belarusian President Announces Formation of a Joint Unit of Belarusian Forces with Russian Army

  • The Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced the formation of a joint unit of Belarusian forces with the Russian army. Lukashenko said that the move was due to growing tensions on Belarus's border with Ukraine. He said that it was necessary to bolster security.
  • However, he did not elaborate on where the troops would be deployed. The Belarusian President also claimed that Ukraine was planning an attack on his country. He said that Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine were training Belarusian radicals to carry out terror attacks.

Power Grid Acquires ETL under TBCB Route

  • Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) acquired ER NER Transmission (ETL), in accordance with its selection as the successful bidder under tariff based competitive bidding.
  • The company acquired ETL, the project special purpose vehicle (SPV), to establish an interstate transmission system for system strengthening scheme for eastern and northeastern regions, on a 'build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis' from the bid process coordinator - REC Power Development and Consultancy.
  • The interstate transmission system comprises of upgradation works at 400/132kV Banka (Bihar) with implementation schedule of 24 months and establishment of 220kV D/C Transmission lines passing through the states of Assam & Arunachal Pradesh and bays extension works with implementation schedule of 36 months.

China Launches ASO-S Satellite to Study the Sun and Space Weather

  • After successfully integrating its under-construction Space Station and approving the next phase of its lunar missions, China launched a new observatory that will look into the sun. The Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory (ASO-S) was launched onboard a Long March-2D rocket.
  • Nicknamed Kuafu-1, after a giant in Chinese mythology who chased the sun, the observatory was placed in an orbit about 720 kilometres above the planet, higher than the orbit of the International Space Station. The observatory, which is about 859 kilograms, lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China.
  • With the satellite now placed into orbit, a six-month-long commissioning phase will begin, after which science operations will commence. The spacecraft would study the causality between the solar magnetic field and two major eruptive phenomena: solar flares and coronal mass ejections.

Anurag Thakur Inaugurates Water Sports Center in HP

  • Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur inaugurated a Water Sports Center in Koldam Barmana, Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh.
  • The centre would be dedicated to training athletes in water sports like rowing, canoeing and kayaking.
  • The Minister said that 40 players would be chosen who would take part in rowing, kayaking and canoeing. There are state of the art equipments and boys and girls would get hostel and training facilities.
  • The Water Sports Centre, the very first of its kind in Himachal Pradesh, was jointly initiated by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also exchanged between SAI and NTPC during the event.

Manipur Beats Odisha to Retain Women's Crown in National Games Football

  • Manipur duly retained their National Games women's football crown by beating Odisha 2-0 in the final at the Eka Arena Transstadia. Both goals came in the first half.
  • It was a facile and expected win for the north-eastern state which has been dominating the National championships in recent years.

EC Allots 'Two Swords and a Shield' Poll Symbol to Shinde Faction of Sena

  • The Election Commission allotted 'two swords and a shield' as the poll symbol to the Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
  • The Shinde faction, which is now named as 'Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena', would be able to use the symbol for the Andheri East assembly bypoll, should it decide to contest the election scheduled for November 3.
  • Shinde welcomed the allocation of the poll symbol and asserted that his group was the true torchbearer for the staunch Hindutva ideology laid down by Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray.

Pakistan to Take Part in the SCO Anti-Terror Exercise Hosted by India

  • Pakistan was invited to the closing ceremony, on October 13, of the ongoing Joint Anti-Terror Exercise (JATE) 'Manesar Anti-Terror 2022' under the ambit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) hosted by India.
  • The National Security Guard (NSG) hosted the multinational JATE "Manesar Anti-Terror 2022" under the framework of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS), at the NSG Manesar Garrison.
  • An Indian delegation had participated in the closing ceremony of the two-week-long JATE-2021 hosted by Pakistan at the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Pabbi, in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa, in September 2021.
  • The exercise was aimed at exchanging expertise and best practices, and build synergy between the Counter Terrorism Forces of the SCO RATS member countries to enhance capabilities for conducting anti-terrorist operations and countering other security threats collectively.

World Arthritis Day

  • Every year since 1996, October 12 is observed as World Arthritis Day (WAD). This day was designed to raise awareness across the globe of the prevailing impact of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases, also known as RMDs. Through the many activities conducted around the world, organisations and their advocates will bring forward many voices. The aim is to make everyone recognise the symptoms related to arthritis and lay emphasis on early diagnosis and treatment.
  • World Arthritis Day (WAD) was established by Arthritis and Rheumatism International (ARI) and the first event was observed on 12 October 1996. Since then many global communities like Arthritis Foundation has joined the cause to raise awareness to fight the awareness gap, provide support and access to the communities, advocating for strong policies and supporting the research work.
  • The World Arthritis Day 2022 theme was "It's in your hands, take action", addressing the world population to join hands for this cause to make this event fruitful for those deprived of the support.

Aligarh Muslim University's Prof. Wazahat Husain Wins Top UAE Award for Alternative Medicine

  • Prof. Wazahat Husain, a leading academic from the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) won an international award for Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
  • Husain, a retired chairman of the Department of Botany at the AMU, received the Second Sheikh Zayed International Award in an event organised by the Zayed Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation.
  • The Foundation is a UAE-based non-governmental, non-profit organisation that invests in developing human capital to improve the quality of life.
  • The award aims to give recognition to eminent academics and scientists of Traditional Complementary and Alternative Medicine (TCAM ) globally, and TCAM physicians from the UAE, for enhancing TCAM knowledge and practices, and contributing to improving the quality of life for humanity.

National Conference on Skilling in Non-Traditional Livelihood for Girls

  • Women and Child Development Ministry organised National Conference on Skilling in Non-Traditional Livelihood for Girls – Betiyan Bane Kushal in New Delhi. The conference was organised under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child. Under the Betiyan Bane Kushal initiative, emphasis was laid on convergence between Ministries and Departments to ensure the skill development of girls.
  • The conference focused on capacity building and skill development of girls to increase their participation in the professions like science, technology, engineering and mathematics. During the event, MoUs were signed between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Ministry of Minority Affairs for Skilling of young Girls for their increased, equal, and empowered participation in the workforce.

IIIT Delhi to Lead Indo-EU Collaboration for Capacity Building in Robotics

  • Adding another feather to its cap, the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (IIIT-Delhi) will now be leading the project IRAS-HUB, funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union (EU). The project is mostly aimed at addressing the lack of skilled talent in robotics technology in India.
  • To overcome the scarcity of skilled talent in robotics technology in India, the project IRAS-HUB will establish three hubs in Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) in India. The hubs will be equipped with prototyping equipment and robotics software and will train researchers from Indian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in RAS with reputable researchers and experts from EU HEIs.
  • The aim of this project is the development of robotics technology for problem-solving in diverse sectors of India, such as agriculture and transportation.

THE World University Rankings: IISc Retains Top Spot in Indian Institutes

  • The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) retained the top position among Indian institutes in the latest round of Times Higher Education (THE) rankings, which has been boycotted by most Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for the third consecutive year over transparency concerns.
  • While it is first among Indian institutions, overall, the IISc is placed in the 251-300 band. Globally, the University of Oxford emerged as the best institute among 1,799 universities from 104 countries, according to a statement issued by THE.
  • The second position among Indian institutions has been taken by the Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences (351-400 overall), which made its debut in the rankings.

CJI UU Lalit Recommends Justice D.Y. Chandrachud as the Next Chief Justice of India

  • Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit named Justice D.Y. Chandrachud as his successor. He handed over a letter to Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, designating him as the next CJI. The letter was handed over in the presence of the other judges of the Supreme Court.
  • Last week, the central government had asked him to name his successor after he retires on November 8. He had taken charge in August when he succeeded Justice N.V. Ramana.
  • The law ministry - as per protocol - writes to the CJI around a month before the due date of retirement to seek the successor's name.
  • The reply is usually sent between 28 and 30 days before the retirement date. As a matter of convention, the next in line, in terms of seniority, after the CJI is chosen as his successor.
  • The Supreme Court will get its 50th Chief Justice when Justice U.U. Lalit retires. He would have completed a 74-day tenure by then.
