Liz Truss to Attend First Meeting of European Nations Club

  • Prime Minister Liz Truss agreed to meet other European leaders at a new political "club of nations".
  • The inaugural summit of the European Political Community (EPC), proposed by French president Emmanuel Macron, will meet in Prague.
  • Although the UK voted in 2016 to leave the EU, it is among more than a dozen non-EU nations invited to join EU members to discuss security and energy.
  • The broad intention is to establish a forum that goes beyond the immediate EU member states.
  • All 27 members of the EU are invited as well as the UK, Ukraine, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey.

Haryana to Develop World's Largest Safari Park

  • Haryana will develop the world's largest jungle safari park in the Aravalli Range.
  • The 10,000-acre safari park will cover Gurugram and Nuh districts.
  • At present, Sharjah is home to the largest curated safari park outside Africa. Opened in February 2022, the Sharjah Safari covers an area of about 2,000 acres.

Rajeev Ranjan Appointed MD of McDonald's North and East India

  • Fast food chain McDonald's North and East India elevated Rajeev Ranjan as the chain's Managing Director for the region.
  • Ranjan will continue to report to Sanjeev Agrawal, chairman, McDonald's India North and East. Ranjan joined the company in 2020 as senior director and was named as the chief operating officer in 2021.
  • The McDonald's business is split between two development licensees in India - Connaught Plaza Restaurants Pvt. Ltd that operates the chain's business in North and East India; its South and West operations are managed by Mumbai-based Westlife Development Limited.

PNB to Sell Its Entire Stake in ARCIL

  • State-owned lender Punjab National Bank (PNB) announced plans to sell its entire 10.1% stake in Asset Reconstruction (India), amounting to 3.25 crore shares. The deal is expected to be completed by December 2022.
  • The sale process of PNB stake in Asset Reconstruction (ARCIL) is subject to the approval of the RBI, and when completed the bank will cease to be a sponsor of ARCIL.
  • The bank is selling its shareholding in ARCIL as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) norms stipulate that a bank can sponsor only one asset reconstruction company (ARC) and its stake in other ARC should be less than 10%.

IndiGo Inducts First Freighter Aircraft, Converted from a Passenger Plane

  • No-frills carrier IndiGo inducted its first freighter aircraft, converted from a passenger plane.
  • The airline is already a market leader in the domestic passenger segment in the country with a fleet of over 275 aircraft, operating over 1,600 daily flights to and from 74 domestic destinations.
  • In addition, as part of its international operations, it caters to 26 destinations in the overseas market.
  • The induction of A321 P2F (passenger to freighter) would help the airline offer cargo services on both domestic and international routes.
  • The aircraft would be able to service markets between China in the east and the Gulf in the west, as well as the CIS countries to the north.

PM Modi Launches Commercial 5G Services

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 5G services at Pragati Maidan in the national capital.
  • 5G technology would provide seamless coverage, high data rate, low latency, and highly reliable communications. It would increase energy efficiency, spectrum efficiency and network efficiency.
  • PM Modi also inaugurated the sixth edition of the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC). The IMC 2022 scheduled to be held from 1-4t October with the theme of "New digital Universe".
  • It will bring together thinkers, entrepreneurs, innovators, and government officials to discuss and showcase unique opportunities emerging from the rapid adoption and spread of digital technology.

Boxer Shiva Thakran Wins WBC Asia Continental Title

  • Indian super middleweight boxer Shiva Thakran was crowned WBC Asia Continental champion after he clinched a Technical Knockout (TKO) victory over Malaysia's Adli Hafidz in Bangkok.
  • The Indian caused ripples in the Asian Pro Boxing circuit with the eighth-round stoppage win over the former South East Asian Games medallist.

AIFF Launches Grassroots Football Development Scheme in Arunachal Pradesh

  • The All India Football Federation (AIFF) launched its grassroots football development (GFD) scheme in Arunachal Pradesh with an aim to tap, select and nurture football talents in the age group of 6 to 12 years.
  • GFD committee chairman Shantanu Pujari launched the scheme in the presence of Chief Minister Pema Khandu and AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey.
  • Khandu, who is also the honorary President of the Arunachal Pradesh Football Association (APFA), announced that the state government would begin this scheme in 100 schools, preferably government-run, very soon in consultation with the state's education department.

CBI Launches Operation GARUDA to Dismantle Drug Networks with International Linkages

  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launched a multi-phase Operation GARUDA to dismantle drug networks with international linkages. The CBI did this in close coordination with enforcement actions across international jurisdictions through INTERPOL and Narcotics Control Bureau with special focus on Indian Ocean Region.
  • Operation GARUDA sought to target drug networks with international footprints for action against handlers, operatives, production zones and support elements.
  • During the operation, searches, seizures and arrests were carried out across multiple states and UTs in the country. Apart from CBI and NCB, eight states and UT Police including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Manipur also participated in this operation.

Suzlon Founder Tulsi Tanti Passes Away

  • Tulsi Tantia, the founder and chairman of Suzlon Energy, passed away. He was 64.
  • In 1995, Tanti formed Suzlon and with the help of a German firm, the company began designing wind turbine generators (WTGs) and, in March 1996, commissioned its first 0.27 MW wind generator for Indian Petrochemicals Ltd (now Reliance Industries) in the state.

President Droupadi Murmu Present 68th National Film Awards

  • President Droupadi Murmu presented the 68th National Film Awards in New Delhi. Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2020 was given to legendary actress Asha Parekh for her exemplary lifetime contribution to Indian Cinema.
  • The best Feature Film award was given to Tamil film Soorarai Pottru. Hindi film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior' got Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
  • Dangi language non-feature film Testimony of Ana was given an award for Best Non-Feature Film. Marathi Film Funeral was awarded Best Film on Social Issues.
  • Ajay Devgan and Suriya was given the Best Actor award for films Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior and Soorarai Pottru. Aparna Balamurali was given the Best Actress Award for Soorarai Pottru. Sachidanandan KR was given the Best Director Award for Malayalam Film AK Ayyappanum Koshiyum. Marathi Film Sumi was given an award for Best Children's Film.

ICCR Collaborates with Google for Global Promotion of Sanskrit

  • The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) announced a collaboration with Google to promote Sanskrit.
  • ICCR and Google had earlier signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance the tech giant's artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) language technology for translating Sanskrit literature to many other languages and vice-versa.
  • Google received 100,000 sentence pairs from ICCR as part of the project's pilot phase in order to form its AI/ML models. The Sanskrit team from the University of Delhi, comprising academics, students and teachers, was led by professor Amarjiva Lochan.

Qutub Minar Most Visited Tourist Destination for Foreigners in April-June

  • The Qutub Minar was the most visited destination for foreign visitors between April and June.
  • The historic Red Fort was the second most visited destination for foreign visitors followed by Humayun's Tomb during the same period.
  • Qutub Minar, a UNSECO-recognised world heritage site in Delhi, received 3,81,249 Indian visitors and 9,063 foreign tourists between April and June, according to data shared by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Delhi Circle.
  • The Mughal-era Red Fort was visited by 5,696 foreign tourists during the three-month period. It received the highest number of domestic visitors at 8,13,434, more than twice the number at Qutub Minar.
  • Humayun's Tomb received 5,139 foreign tourists.

Supreme Court Rejects Petition against Design of National Emblem Installed Atop Central Vista

  • The Supreme Court rejected a petition filed against installing the State Emblem atop the Central Vista building, claiming that its design was in violation of the State Emblem of India (Prohibition Against Improper Use) Act, 2005.
  • The Bench of Justice M.R. Shah and Justice Krishna Murari said that they have seen the emblem and found it not violative of the law.
  • The Court remarked that the impression the emblem gives depends on the mind of the person. It was a matter of perception, not violation.
  • The petition was filed by Advocates Aldanish Rein and Ramesh Kumar Mishra, who believed that the lions portrayed in the emblem inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi appear ferocious and aggressive with open mouth and visible canines, in contrast with the State Emblem preserved in the Sarnath Museum, where the lions seem to be calm and composed.
