Antigua and Barbuda Joins International Solar Alliance
To catalyze global energy transition through a solar-led approach, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda joined the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
In the presence of the Indian High Commissioner Dr. K. J. Srinivasa, Antigua Prime Minister Gaston Browne inked the framework agreement of ISA, making it the 102nd country to join this agreement.
The International Solar Alliance (ISA) is an action-oriented, member-driven, collaborative platform for increased deployment of solar energy technologies as a means for bringing energy access, ensuring energy security, and driving energy transition in its member countries. Launched by India & France in 2015 to facilitate energy access, security & transition.
The Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) is an integral part of International Waterbird Census. The international census is conducted in 143 countries.
The AWC is jointly held by Wetlands International and Bombay Natural History Society. AWC is held in the month of January every year. During the census, the volunteers visit the wetlands and count the waterbirds. The major regions covered under AWC are Southeast Asia, Australasia, East Asian – Australasian Flyway, region between Afghanistan and Japan. It was started in 1987. In 2021, the AWC reported that the overall waterbird population dipped by four times as compared to 2020.
Bharti Airtel's African Arm Completes $176 mn Tower Sale Deal in Tanzania
Bharti Airtel's African arm completed the first part of its $176 million telecom tower sale deal in Tanzania. The sale is part of its overall deleveraging strategy, which netted over $800 million through fund raise and asset sales in 2021.
Airtel Africa's tower assets in Tanzania were acquired by a joint venture company owned by SBA Communications Corporation and Paradigm Infrastructure Ltd.
Under the terms of the transaction, Airtel's business unit in Tanzania would continue to develop, maintain and operate its equipment on the towers under separate lease agreements.
Airtel operates in 14 African countries and provides mobile service and mobile money services in the continent.
Reliance Jio Introduces UPI Autopay in Collaboration with NPCI
Reliance Jio, in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), launched autopay facilities for millions of UPI and Jio users, making the telecom giant the first player in its industry to integrate with this unique e-mandate feature.
This feature, namely the UPI autopay, would allow Jio customers to set standing instructions on the MyJio app for a hassle-free recharging experience and allow them to seamlessly enjoy their favourite tariff plans.
Jio's integration with UPI autopay has made it the first player in the telecom industry to go live with the unique e-mandate feature that was launched by NPCI.
Technicians Successfully Deploy James Webb Telescope Giant Sunshield
NASA technicians successfully fully deployed the massive sunshield protecting the James Webb Space Telescope.
The sunshield - about the size of a tennis court at full size - was folded to fit inside the payload area of an Arianespace Ariane 5 rocket's nose cone prior to launch. The Webb team began remotely deploying the sunshield on Decemebr 28, 2021, three days after launch.

Fantasy sports platform My11Circle signed up with RP-Sanjiv Goenka group's Lucknow franchise as the official title sponsor of the team for the upcoming season of Indian Premier League.
The three-year deal will see My11Circle logo featuring on the Lucknow team jersey.
Lucknow franchise is one of the new teams apart from Ahmedabad side in the upcoming season of IPL.
Cabinet Approves MoU between India and Turkmenistan on Cooperation in the field of Disaster Management
The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Turkmenistan on Cooperation in the field of Disaster Management.
The MoU seeks to put in place a system, whereby both India and Turkmenistan will be benefited from the Disaster Management mechanisms of each other and it will help in strengthening the areas of preparedness, response and capacity building in the field of Disaster Management.
At present, India has signed the bilateral / multilateral Agreement / MoU / Joint Declaration of Intent / Memorandum of Cooperation for cooperation in the field of Disaster Management with Switzerland, Russian, SAARC, Germany, Japan, Tajikistan, Mongolia, Bangladesh and Italy.
Punjab Panel on PM Security Lapse (Mehtab Singh Gill Committee)
The Punjab Government created a high level team to investigate the security breach of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Following the security breach, the Punjab Government formed the Mehtab Singh Gill Committee. Mr. Gill is a retired judge. The committee also comprises of Home secretary of Punjab. The committee is to produce a report within three days.
Pratapsingh Rane Accorded Permanent Cabinet Status by Goa Govt.
Pratapsingh Rane, former Goa Chief Minister and Congress veteran, was accorded permanent status of a cabinet for his service to the coastal state.
The decision to accord him the honour was taken as Rane completed 50 years as a legislator in the Goa Assembly during the current tenure. Rane, also a former speaker, currently represents the Poriem Assembly segment as a Congress MLA.
The state cabinet had resolved that those persons who have completed 50 years as MLA, and were former chief ministers or former speakers, would be given such a status in the future.
Neil Nongkynrih, Pianist Who Led Shillong Chamber Choir to Glory, Dies
Neil Nongkynrih, the Shillong-based pianist, who turned a group of musicians from Shillong into a world-class, multi-genre choir, passed away at the age of 51. Nongkynrih, is the founder, conductor, and mentor of Shillong Chamber Orchestra.
The Choir came under the spotlight after winning India's Got Talent in 2010 post which they won the World Choir Games. The Choir was also chosen to perform at Rashtrapati Bhawan for former American President Barack Obama's visit.
The in-person return of the Sundance Film Festival was cancelled due to a surge in COVID-19 cases spurred by the Omicron variant, with the festival going completely virtual.
The festival was scheduled to take place from January 20-30, and offer a virtual component for those who could not attend in person.
JC Chaudhry Achieves the First Guinness World Record on Numerology, First of 2022
The first-ever Guinness World Record in Numerology and the first world record of 2022 was achieved by one of India's top numerologists J.C. Chaudhry educating about ancient science to around 6000 participants, enthusiasts of numerology joined from USA, UK, Middle East, and India.
The initiative was organised by CNPL (Chaudhry Nummero Pvt Ltd) and the Indian Institute of Numerology to create awareness regarding numerology, which was prevalent across ancient cultures like Greece, Egypt, China, Chaldea and India.
Swapnil Dangarikar, the Guinness Record adjudicator, said that Guinness World Record London office has opened a new category itself for this achievement, and this is a pioneering achievement for the year of 2022.
The flagship UJALA programme of the Ministry of Power has successfully completed seven years of distributing and selling LED lights in January 2022. Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2015.
UJALA initiative is the world's largest zero-subsidy domestic lighting programme with more than 36.78 crore LEDs distributed across the country.
As on January 5, 2022, 47,778 million (48 billion) kilowatt-hour (kWh) per annum energy was saved. The demand of 9,565 Megawatt (MW) was avoided, along with 386 crore tonnes of reduction in CO2 emissions.
Prof. Pradeep Kumar Mishra, vice chancellor (VC) at Jharkhand University of Technology, Ranchi, was appointed the new VC of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), Lucknow. He will replace Prof. Vineet Kansal who was given the additional charge of vice chancellor in August last year.
Mishra was appointed VC for three years from the day he assumes office.
The Government of India is planning to bring a new tourism policy. The policy aims to provide better facilities and services to the tourists visiting India. It will create five missions in the country.
The missions of the policy are:
National Green Tourism Mission: To bring sustainability in tourism
National Digital Tourism Mission: To digitize the tourism industry
Sectoral Mission on Skill Development: To provide qualified manpower and trained professionals to the tourism industry
National Mission on Destination Management: To provide coordination among public and private stakeholder
National Mission on Tourism MSMEs: To facilitate startups and MSMEs
Tourism Week was organised between January 3 and January 15, 2022.
Jitendra Singh Inaugurates India's First Open Rock Museum
Union Minister of State for Science & Technology Jitender Singh inaugurated India's first open rock museum displaying different types of rocks gathered from different states with ages ranging from 3.3 billion years to around 55 million years on the campus of the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) in Hyderabad, Telangana.
About 46 rocks of different sizes have been elegantly displayed in a garden with focus lights and descriptions giving the economic and scientific importance of some of them located as deep as 175 km from the surface of the earth. The rocks have been sourced from Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir and others.
