World UFO Day

  • World Sports Journalists Day is observed globally on 2nd July every year. The day aims to acknowledge the work of sports journalists and to encourage them to do better at their work. Sports journalists help millions of people in the world to receive information on various sports. These journalists have their associations to maintain their standards in their profession.
  • World Sports Journalist Day was established by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) in 1994 to mark the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the organization. AIPS was formed on July 2 of 1924, during the Summer Olympics in Paris.

National Chartered Accountants Day

  • India celebrates Chartered Accountants Day every year on July 1 to commemorate the findings of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) by Parliament in 1949.
  • ICAI is deemed as the second biggest accounting organization in the world.
  • After Independence in the year 1948, an expert committee recommended that a separate autonomous association of accountants should be set up to regulate the profession of accountants in the country. The Indian government adhered to the recommendation and passed an act in the Parliament that gave birth to a statutory body named the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).

National Doctors' Day

  • Every year, National Doctor's Day is observed to recognise the role and contributions of doctors in people's lives and communities. Different countries observe this day on different dates, but in India, National Doctor's Day is celebrated on July 1 and is organised annually by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
  • It was first celebrated in the year 1991 to pay honour to Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who was also the Chief Minister of Bengal back then. This day was celebrated to acknowledge the extraordinary contributions to the medical fraternity made by Dr. BC Roy in his medical career.
  • Born on July 1, 1882, DR BC Roy was one of the prominent freedom fighters as well as a highly respected doctor who was also honoured with the Bharat Ratna in February 1961. Roy played a significant role in establishing medical institutions like Jadavpur T.B. Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Victoria Institution (college), Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, and the Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for women and children.

World Asteroid Day

  • World Asteroid Day is observed every year on 30 June. It is a United Nations-sanctioned day for public awareness of the risks of asteroid impacts on the world. The day is observed with a view to educate the common public about the risks of asteroids and the opportunities in the field.
  • Asteroid Day was co-founded by Stephen Hawking, filmmaker Grigorij Richters, B612 Foundation President, Danica Remy, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart and Brian May, Queen guitarist and astrophysicist.
  • In December 2016, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/71/90 and designated June 30 as the International Asteroid Day. The date was chosen to observe the anniversary of the Tunguska asteroid impact over Siberia, on June 30, 1908. The idea to mark the day was proposed by the Association of Space Explorers which was endorsed by the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).

International Day of Parliamentarism

  • The International Day of Parliamentarism is celebrated every year on 30 June, the date in 1889 on which the Inter-Parliamentary Union IPU was founded. The Day was established in 2018 through a United Nations General Assembly Resolution.
  • Instituting an international day for parliaments is particularly important at this critical time for parliamentary democracy, when people are losing trust in political institutions and democracy itself is facing challenges from populist and nationalist movements.

International Day of the Tropics

  • International Day of the Tropics is observed annually on June 29. The event highlights the importance of the tropics and the environmental and socio-economic challenges faced in these regions.
  • The James Cook University of Australia, in collaboration with 11 other research institutions, submitted the first State of the Tropics Report, launched in June 2014. The report looked at several environmental, social and economic issues to understand whether life in the tropics was improving.
  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) took cognisance of this report. It adopted the resolution A/RES/70/267 in June 2016, and designated June 29 as the International Day of the Tropics.

National Statistics Day

  • National Statistics Day is celebrated every year on 29 June to mark the birth anniversary of late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. Professor Mahalanobis has an immense contribution to the fields of economic planning and statistical development in the post-independent era.
  • Mahalanobis was also a member of the first Planning Commission of India. In 1950, he established the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) with a Statistical Laboratory set up. The first National Statistics Day was celebrated in 2007.
  • The theme of National Statistics Day 2022 was 'Data for Sustainable Development'.

World MSME Day

  • World MSME Day is observed every year on June 27 all over the world to highlight the significance of MSMEs and how they play a crucial role in being the backbone of the country's economy. Micro-Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises are the organisations that do not usually employ more than 250 employees, however, are responsible for creating more than two-thirds of all jobs globally. World MSME Day 2022 recognises the potential of MSMEs and their role in strengthening the economies globally. World MSME Day 2022 also aimed to raise public awareness regarding the contribution of MSMEs to global economic growth and sustainable development.
  • World MSME Day was first marked by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in its 74th Plenary on April 6, 2017. The decision of observing World MSME Day came after the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) 2016 World Conference declaration on the urgent need to recognise the MSMEs role in the global development.
  • The theme of World MSME Day 2022 was 'Resilience and Rebuilding: MSMEs for Sustainable Development'.
