Adani Sportsline is Principal Sponsor of Indian Olympic Association

  • Adani Sportsline, the sports arm of the Adani Group, inked a long-term principal sponsorship deal with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). It would be the official partner of the Indian contingent during the upcoming Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022, the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022, and the Paris Olympic Games 2024. The group had earlier been associated with the Indian contingent during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
  • The partnership is an extension of the Adani Group's sports portfolio that focuses on building a world-class ecosystem to nurture sporting talent, accelerate the sports economy, and play the role of an enabler in India's journey to becoming a leading sporting nation.
  • Adani Sportsline has supported over 28 athletes through its athlete support initiative, #GarvHai, across a variety of sports. Six of these athletes represented India at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, and among them was wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya, who brought home a silver medal.
  • Adani Sportsline also owns teams on Indian and global platforms, including the Pro Kabaddi League, Ultimate Kho Kho League, Big Bout Boxing League, and International League T20 (cricket), among other initiatives.

Formula E Enters India; Hyderabad to Host First ever Race in February

  • Formula E will make its way to India for the first time ever with a race scheduled to be held in Hyderabad on February 11, 2023, the organisers confirmed.
  • The race in Hyderabad will be the first time a major international racing event is held in the country since the Formula 1 Indian Grand Prix in October 2013 at the Buddh International Circuit.
  • Alongside India, Brazil will also welcome the E-Prix for the first time on March 25 as the Formula E and FIA released the provisional calendar for the upcoming ninth season (2022-23).

England Picks Jos Buttler as Captain of T20 and ODI Teams

  • Jos Buttler was promoted to England's new white-ball captain and took immediate charge of the Twenty20 and one-day international cricket teams.
  • Vice-captain since 2015, Buttler has deputised for Eoin Morgan on 14 occasions.
  • Buttler will take charge of 12 games in July, with T20 and ODI series against India and South Africa.
  • The wicketkeeper-batter is a ferocious striker of the ball. He has played 151 ODI games for England, scoring 4,120 runs at an average of 41.20, including 10 hundreds and 21 fifties.

Gujarat to Host National Games in Sept-Oct

  • Postponed several times due to different reasons, the National Games will be held in multiple cities in Gujarat in September-October 2022, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Secretary General Rajiv Mehta confirmed. IOA took the decision after Gujarat Olympic Association and the state government jointly expressed their interest to host the Games.
  • The Games will be held in five or six cities in Gujarat, including Ahmedabad.
  • The last National Games were held in Kerala in 2015 and Goa was to host the 36th edition in November 2016. After two delays in 2018 and 2019 due to the state's inability to create adequate infrastructure, the Games were further postponed to 2020.
  • Covid-19 then forced the postponement of the National Games in 2020.

Indian Olympic Association Wants CGF to Increase India's Quota

  • The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) requested the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to consider increasing India's athlete quota so that high jumper Tejaswin Shankar and five others can be included in the country's contingent for the Birmingham Games.
  • The 2022 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXII Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Birmingham 2022, is an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth that is scheduled to be held in Birmingham, England from 28 July to 8 August 2022.

Asiad Medallist Poovamma Handed 3-month Ban

  • Senior India quarter-miler and Asian games medallist M.R. Poovamma was handed a three-month ban by the National Anti-Doping Agency for failing a dope test last year.
  • Poovamma's dope sample collected during the Indian Grand Prix in Patiala in February 2021 had returned positive for stimulant methylhexaneamine.
  • Athletics Federation of India (AFI) President Adillle Sumariwalla confirmed the development.

Olympic Champion Sydney McLaughlin Breaks own 400m Hurdles World Record

  • Olympic gold medallist, Sydney McLaughlin broke her own women's 400 metres hurdles world record at the U.S. championships in Eugene, Oregon, winning the final in 51.41 seconds. Britton Wilson finished 1.67 seconds behind with Shamier Little taking third in 53.92.
  • Sydney previously set the record with a 51.90-seconds performance at the U.S. Olympic trials in 2021, only to shatter that figure in Tokyo, collecting gold in 51.46.

Novak Djokovic Becomes 1st Player to Win 80 Matches in all Four Grand Slams

  • Defending champion Novak Djokovic survived the first round challenge against South Korean Kwon Soon-woo 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at Wimbledon.
  • With the win, the 35-year-old Djokovic became the first player, male or female, to record 80 singles wins at all four Grand Slams.
  • Djokovic next faces Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, ranked 79 in the world, who beat Kamil Majchrzak of Poland in straight sets.

IWF Chooses Mohammed Jalood as President 2022

  • Mohammed Jalood was elected as president of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), and 11 additional new members were added to its Executive Board.
  • Jalood is a long time IWF official held the post of general secretary and worked closely with Al-Mana at the Asian Weightlifting Federation.
  • Jalood is the first permanent president since Tamás Aján stepped down in 2020 after controlling the IWF for 44 years. He faced allegations that failed drug tests were covered up and millions of dollars were unaccounted for under his presidency.
  • The IWF was founded in 1905, and has 192 Member Federations.
