UNSC Adopts Resolution on Protection of Education in Armed Conflict

  • The UN Security Council adopted a resolution on the protection of education in armed conflict.
  • Resolution 2601, which won the unanimous support of the 15-member council, strongly condemns all violations of applicable international law involving the recruitment and use of children by parties to armed conflict as well as their re-recruitment, killing and maiming, rape and other forms of sexual violence, and abductions.
  • The resolution urges UN member states to develop effective measures to prevent and address attacks and threats of attacks against schools and education facilities, and, as appropriate, develop domestic legal frameworks to ensure respect for their relevant international legal obligations.

WHO Director-general Ghebreyesus Runs Unopposed for 2nd Five-year Term

  • The World Health Organization said that its director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, is running unopposed for a second five-year term.
  • The U.N. health agency made the announcement after the deadline for candidacies for the next term expired in September. The formal selection of the next director-general takes place at the WHO's next assembly in May.
  • Tedros, an Ethiopian national who is the first African to head WHO, has overseen the agency's complex response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has overshadowed his tenure. Trained in biology and infectious diseases with a doctorate in community health, he is also the first WHO chief who is not a medical doctor.

South Korea Inaugurates World's Largest Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Plant

  • The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of South Korea held that the 'Shinincheon Bitdream Fuel Cell Power Plant' at the Shinincheon Bitdream headquarters of Korea Southern Power in Seo-gu, Incheon has been completed and inaugurated. The power plant is operated by South Korea's independent power production company, POSCO Energy and Doosan Fuel Cell. It has a capacity of 78 MW constructed in four stages from 2017. The project cost about 340 billion won ($292 million).
  • It is the world's largest fuel cell plant currently in operation.

IL&FS Gets NCLT Nod for InvIT

  • Scam-hit Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) received approval from National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) to introduce its phase 1 of Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT).
  • With this approval, six road projects — Barwa Adda Expressway Ltd, Baleshwar Kharagpur Expressway Ltd, Sikar Bikaner Highway Ltd, East Hyderabad Expressway Ltd, Moradabad Bareilly Expressway Ltd and Jharkhand Road Projects Implementation Company Ltd — will be transferred to the newly formed Roadstar Infra Investment Trust under its InvIT Phase 1.

KPMG Appoints Yezdi Nagporewalla as India CEO

  • Yezdi Nagporewalla was appointed as the new chief executive of KPMG India for a four-year term commencing February 2022 and ending December 2026.
  • Nagporewalla succeeds Arun M Kumar, the current chairman and CEO who completes his five-year term in the first week of February 2022.
  • Nagporewalla joined the financial and tax advisory over two decades ago.
  • KPMG India has seen brisk growth in revenues and its workforce strength has grown by 70 per cent in the past four years. The firm has introduced many new offerings and inducted over 90 partners to broaden its skill-base and strengthen its delivery capabilities.
  • KPMG, which entered the country in August 1993, has offices across Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gurugram (Delhi), Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Noida (Delhi), Pune, Vadodara, and Vijayawada.

Adani Group Buys Minority Stake in Online Travel Aggregator Cleartrip

  • The Adani Group announced it would acquire a significant minority stake in Cleartrip, an online travel aggregator (OTA) and part of the Flipkart Group.
  • The amount of investment was not disclosed. As part of the investment, Cleartrip will also serve as the Adani Group's OTA partner. The deal is expected to close in November, subject to customary closing conditions.
  • By collaborating with the Adani Group, Cleartrip aims to provide consumers with a seamless travel experience and further accelerate its growth.

Hubble Observes Red Giant Star CW Leonis

  • CW Leonis, which is located 400 light-years away in the constellation of Leo, is a carbon star — a luminous type of red giant star with a carbon-rich atmosphere.
  • Also known as IRC +10216 and LEDA 1427054, it has an orange-reddish color due to its relatively low surface temperature of 1,260 degrees Celsius (2,300 degrees Fahrenheit).

  • Earlier in the day, Bollywood actress Nafisa Ali and Mrinalini Deshprabhu also joined the TMC in the presence of the party chief.

India, Israel Agree to form Task Force to Identify New Areas of Defence Cooperation

  • The Joint Working Group (JWG) of India and Israel has agreed to form a task force to formulate a comprehensive 10-year roadmap to identify new areas of defence cooperation. The 15th meeting of the JWG took place in Tel Aviv, Israel. It was co-chaired by Indian Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar and Director General of Israel's Defence Ministry Amir Eshel, according to a statement issued by the ministry.
  • It was also decided at the meeting that a sub-working group (SWG) on defence industry cooperation would be formed, and a term of reference was signed by the two countries in this regard.

  • Former Himachal Pradesh minister Gurumukh Singh Bali passed away in New Delhi.
  • He was a senior Congress leader.
  • Bali was born on July 27, 1954 in Kangra.
  • He was elected as MLA from Nagrota Bagwan four times in a row in 1998, 2003, 2007 and 2012 and served as the food supply, transport and technical education Minister.

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day

  • National Unity Day is celebrated in India on 31 October. It was introduced by the Government of India in 2014. The day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel who had a major role in the political integration of India.
  • This year (2021) marks the 146th anniversary of the Iron Man of India. The objective is to maintain the nation's unity and aims to spread awareness about Patel's contribution to Indian history.
  • Patel played a crucial role in India's freedom movement and in the integration of India from 560 princely states.

BRICS Joint Statistical Publication

  • The 13th Meeting of Heads of National Statistical Offices of BRICS Countries was held virtually, under the Chairship of India.
  • Meeting was chaired by Dr. G. P. Samanta, who happens to be the Chief Statistician of India & Secretary of Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
  • Representatives from National Statistical Offices (NSOs) of the BRICS Countries attended the meeting.
  • In the meeting, JSP (Joint Statistical Publication) 2021 and JSP Snapshot 2021 for BRICS Countries were released.
  • Speakers from BRICS NSOs spoke on efforts taken so far and future plan with respect to data & methodologies in monitoring the SDGs.

Delhi Metro Wins 'Metro Rail with the Best Passenger Services' Award

  • The Delhi Metro bagged the award for 'Metro Rail with the Best Passenger Services and Satisfaction' at the Urban Mobility India Conference hosted by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry.
  • Surat was awarded for the best public transport system while Kochi got an award for the most sustainable transport system.
  • According to the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, Delhi was awarded the best non-motorised transport system for the redevelopment project of Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation.
  • The awards were given away by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
