V. Muraleedharan Attends 10th East Asia Summit Foreign Minister's Meeting
The Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan attended the 10th East Asia Summit Foreign Minister's virtual meeting during which views upon the international and regional developments including the Coronavirus pandemic were discussed.
As per the statement by the External Affairs Ministry, the meeting which was held via video conference was attended by the Foreign Ministers of the East Asia Summit (EAS) participating countries.
It was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Vietnam Pham Bin Minh.
India, China Agree on 5-Point Plan for Resolving Border Tension
After a two-and-a-half-hour-long meeting that went in Moscow, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said they had agreed on a five-point course of action to de-escalate the four-month-long standoff between troops at the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
The five-point plan includes abiding by the consensus between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping to "not allow differences to become disputes", quick disengagement to ease tensions, abiding by existing India-China border protocols and avoiding escalatory action, continuing dialogue between the Special Representatives NSA Ajit Doval and Mr. Wang as well as the other mechanisms, and finally, to work towards new confidence-building measures.
India, Japan Ink Mutual Military Logistics Agreement
After years of negotiations, India and Japan have inked a landmark agreement that will allow their militaries to access each other's bases for logistics support, a key development that comes in the backdrop of growing concerns over China's military muscle flexing in the region.
The acquisition and cross-servicing pact was signed by Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar and Japanese Ambassador Suzuki Satoshi.
The agreement provides for creation of an enabling framework for closer cooperation and interoperability, besides allowing militaries of the two countries to use each other's bases and facilities for repair and replenishment of supplies.
Forest Department to Study Elephants Using Coonoor Slopes
The Forest Department has taken up an exercise, for the first time, to study elephants using the landscape of the Coonoor ghat.
The study is being done in association with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-India).
According to Forest Department officials, little is known about the elephants that use this particular habitat range along the lower Coonoor slopes.
The Department, with the help of conservationists and NGOs, has a better understanding of the elephant populations that use other habitats in the Nilgiris, including Gudalur and other forest ranges that fall under the Nilgiris forest division.
68% Average Decline in Species Population Sizes Since 1970: WWF Report
Globally, monitored population sizes of mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians have declined an average of 68% between 1970 and 2016, according to World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) Living Planet Report 2020.
Populations in Latin America and the Caribbean have fared worst, with an average decline of 94%. Global freshwater species have also been disproportionally impacted, declining 84% on average.
As an important indicator of planetary health, these drastic species population trends signal a fundamentally broken relationship between humans and the natural world, the consequences of which—as demonstrated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic—can be catastrophic.

With the global economy racing to embrace digital payments, central banks also are looking to the future and investigating how to support innovation while maintaining monetary policy and financial stability as they issue and distribute currency.

Shipping Minister Launches 'SAROD-Ports' for Disputes of Maritime Sector
Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has launched a dispute redressal mechanism named "SAROD-Ports" (Society for Affordable Redressal of Disputes-Ports) to facilitate affordable and timely resolution of disputes for the maritime sector.
SAROD-Ports will advise and assist in settlement of disputes through arbitrations in the maritime sector, including ports and shipping sector in Major Port Trusts, Non-major Ports, including private ports, jetties, terminals and harbours.
The mechanism is similar to provision available in the highway sector in the form of SAROD-Roads constituted by NHAI. It has been established under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 for affordable and timely resolution of disputes in a fair manner.

Hubballi Railway Station in Karnataka will now be known as 'Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji Railway Station. Union government has approved long-pending demand of Hubballians of renaming the Hubballi railway station.
Name of Hubballi railway station, which is headquarters of South Western Railway, is being changed for the second time in the last five years. It was changed in 2015 from 'Hubli' to 'Hubballi'.
Siddharoodha Swamiji was an Indian Hindu guru and philosopher.

On September 10, 2020, the Department of Posts launched a scheme called the "Five Star Villages".
The scheme ensures universal coverage of flagship postal schemes in rural areas of India.
It seeks to bridge the gap in public awareness and reach postal services and products in the interior of villages.
The scheme is to be implemented by a team of Gramin Dak Sevak.
The team will be headed by the Branch Post Master.
Cabinet Approves Amendments to 3 Labour Codes
The Union cabinet approved amendments to the labour codes on social security, industrial relations, and occupational safety and health (OSH), which could include pension and medical benefits to gig workers.
The codes – to be moved in the forthcoming monsoon session of Parliament – will allow states to introduce significant changes to their labour laws framework, such as rules for retrenchment, through notifications.

In a step towards making health and wellness services closer to the community, Nagaland received its first Naga Tele health, a telemedicine platform, where citizens can directly connect with medical officers and specialist doctors and seek general and specialized tele-consultation at their doorstep free of cost.
Health and Family Welfare Minister S Pangnyu Phom virtually launched the Naga Tele-Health at his office chamber in Kohima.
The Naga Tele-Health service will be launched in a phased manner. Currently the services are rolled out in 82 Sub Health Centers connecting Medical Officers at Primary Health Centers and Districts for general tele-consultation.
