China's Giant Telescope With Area Of 30 Football Fields Goes Live

  • China operationalised the world's largest radio telescope with a diameter of half-a-kilometre, adding that the colossal device is expected to make major scientific discoveries in the coming years.
  • The "Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope" (FAST) is a single-dish telescope and is located in southwest China's Guiyang city, the capital of Guizhou province.
  • The telescope has a receiving area of around 30 football fields.
  • The telescope will gradually open to astronomers around the globe, providing them with a powerful tool to uncover the mysteries surrounding the genesis and evolutions of the universe.

India, Bangladesh Sign MoU For Co-Production Of Film On Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

  • India and Bangladesh signed an MoU for co-production of a film on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to be directed by eminent filmmaker Shyam Benegal that will be released as part of birth centenary celebrations of the Bangladesh founder.
  • The agreement was signed in the presence of Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar and his Bangladeshi counterpart Hasan Mahmud.
  • India has extended its support to establish a film city in Bangladesh and also have technical exchange between National Film Development Corporation and Bangladesh Film Development Corporation.

Banks, Bankers May Face Fines For Poor Progress

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is to impose heavy penalties on banks, and stipulate higher provisioning for stressed loans. RBI announced it earlier on 7 June 2019. 
  • For the first time, RBI has said that the chief executive officers (CEOs) and senior management of banks can also be held liable for lack of progress. The fresh set of guidelines will be in the public domain by the end of March 2020.

US Removes Currency Manipulator Label On China

  • The United States removed the currency manipulator label it imposed on China, in a sign of easing tensions between the economic powers after nearly two years of conflict.
  • Just two days before President Donald Trump is set to sign a "phase one" trade agreement with China, the US Treasury said in its semi-annual report to Congress that the yuan has strengthened and Beijing is no longer considered a currency manipulator.

Bajaj Auto Relaunches Chetak In An Electric Avatar

  • Bajaj Auto announced the formal launch of its much awaited electric scooter Chetak at an ex-showroom price of Rs 1 to 1.15 lakh in Pune and Bengaluru post all the subsidies.
  • The vehicle will be available in two variants - Urbane and Premium. A home charging station is included in the package. The Chetak Urbane edition with Drum Brakes is priced at Rs 1 lakh, while the Chetak Premium edition with disc brakes and luxury finish will be priced at Rs 1.15 lakh. Both prices are ex-showroom prices and inclusive of applicable subsidies and exclusive of insurance and road tax.

GSAT 30 To Be Launched On January 17

  • GSAT-30: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch 'GSAT-30' from French Guiana on January 17, 2020. The launch of the communication satellite will be ISRO's first satellite launch of the year 2020.
  • GSAT-30 communication satellite will be launched aboard Ariane 5 launch vehicle (VA 251) from French Guiana at 2:35 am IST on January 17. The satellite with an approximate weight of 3357 kg will have a mission life of more than 15 years.
  • GSAT 30 will serve as a replacement to INSAT-4A spacecraft services with enhanced coverage. The satellite will be launched along with the European Space Company's telecommunication satellite- Eutelsat Konnect.

  • A five-year-old boy Aashman Taneja has made a Guinness world record in Taekwondo for the most full contact knee strikes in one-hour non-stop.
  • Aashman is an incredible Taekwondo player and an athlete at a very young age. He is a USA World Open Taekwondo Silver medalist and a proud Guinness World Record holder now.
  • He attempted the Guinness World Record for the most full contact knee strikes in one-hour non-stop and successfully achieved more than 1200 knee strikes.

Barcelona Becomes Highest-Earning Football Club

  • FC Barcelona has topped the list of the richest football clubs in the world for the first time with a revenue of 840.8 million euros ($935.97 million) during the 2018-19 season.
  • The increase in its earnings has allowed Barca to surpass its arch-rival Real Madrid, which earned 757.3 million euros, one per cent more than the previous season, when its revenue stood at 750.9 million euros.
  • The top 10 of the list includes five English clubs -- Manchester United, which is in third place, Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea -- German club Bayern Munich in fourth, France''s Paris Saint-Germain in fifth and Italy''s Juventus in 10th.

Australia Beat India By 10 Wickets In First ODI

  • David Warner and Aaron Finch's record opening stand helped Australia beat India by 10 wickets in the first ODI at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Both batsmen scored centuries as Australia chased down the target in 37.4 overs.
  • Put in to bat first, the Indian team was bowled out for 255.

Register Drones By January 31 Or Face Action: Aviation Ministry

  • The Aviation Ministry announced a scheme providing a window up to January 31, 2020 for voluntary registration of all drones and their operators, days after top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani was killed in a US drone attack.
  • Those who fail to register will face action under the Indian Penal Code and the Aircraft Act.

CM Thackeray To Launch First Girder Of MTHL

  • Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will launch the first girder of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) corridor, aimed at providing improved connectivity between Navi Mumbai and Mumbai.
  • The girder, a support beam used in construction, will be installed near a temporary access bridge near Sewri Fort.
  • The MTHL corridor, first planned in 1967, had failed to take off for want of approvals from the Centre. The BJP-Shiv Sena government started work on the project in 2017 after receiving necessary clearances. MMRDA said currently, 22 per cent of the work has been completed.

Housing Ministry Launched e-Commerce Platform For Real Estate Sector

  • To bring the trust back in the real estate sector, housing ministry launched an e-commerce platform to facilitate homebuyers in identifying genuine properties.
  • The online platform is for projects that have received occupancy certificates (OCs) and is expected to create a seamless, safe and transparent home-buying experience for home buyers. The ministry official said that it will create positive sentiment for the real estate industry, boosting confidence and faith amongst home buyers, enhancement of liquidity flow in the industry and contributing to growth of the economy.
  • After the launch, the portal will be open for one month only for the real estate developers to register their projects following which the portal will be opened for home buyers with a 45-day sale peridot starting February 14, 2020.

RBI's New Deputy Governor

  • Michael Debabrata Patra has been appointed deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India, according to a Personnel Ministry order.
  • He has been appointed to the post for a period of three years.
  • Patra, who is looking after the monetary policy department as the executive director, will be the fourth deputy governor of the RBI. The post was lying vacant after Viral V Acharya had resigned from the post.
  • Patra is likely to retain the monetary policy department, which was handled by Acharya, as the deputy governor.
  • The RBI, headed by Governor Shaktikanta Das, can have a maximum of four deputy governors.

Captain Tania Shergill, First Woman Army Officer To Become Parade Adjutant For Republic Day

  • Captain Tania Shergill, an officer with Army's Corps of Signals, will be the first woman parade adjutant for the Republic Day parade. A parade adjutant is responsible for the parade.
  • Commissioned in March, 2017, from the Officer Training Academy, Chennai, Shergill is an electronics and communications graduate.
  • Both her father and grandfather have served in the Army. Her father was in 101 Medium Regiment (Artillery) while her grandfather was in the 14th Armed Regiment (Scinde Horse).
  • Interestingly, her great grandfather was in the Sikh Regiment.

Dr. Mihir Shah Appointed Chairman Of The Committee To Draft The National Water Policy

  • The Shiv Nadar University, a leading multidisciplinary and research-focused university, announced that Dr. Mihir Shah, Distinguished Professor at the University has been appointed the Chairman of the Committee to draft the National Water Policy.
  • The Committee will submit the draft report within six months.
  • Dr. Shah has designed a globally first-of-its-kind Master Program in Water Science and Policy at the Centre for Public Affairs and Critical Theory (C-PACT), School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SoHSS) at Shiv Nadar University.

  • Addressing the gathering Prime Minister praised the illustrious progress made by the magazine in the last 50 years. He however regretted the passing away of its founder Cho Ramaswamy.
  • Prime Minister said that the magazine was based on Facts, Intelligent Arguments and Satire.

Govt May Treat Rare Disease Patients At One-Time Treatment Cost Up To ₹15 Lakh

  •  The government released a draft policy, under which it proposed to fund one-time treatment cost to the tune of ₹15 lakh for certain treatable rare diseases, provided the patient was eligible under its flagship health insurance scheme, Ayushman Bharat's Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
  • Under the draft National Policy for Rare Diseases, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare would provide financial support under its umbrella scheme Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi.
  • While Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi is aimed at providing financial assistance to patients living below the poverty line, under the rare disease policy, the financial benefits will also be extended to the broader class of Ayushman Bharat, which covers 40% of the population.

More Girls Than Boys Enrolled In Govt Schools In 2019: Report

  • The number of girls getting enrolled in government schools is higher than boys in the age group of 4-8 years, according to the 14th Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) launched.
  • The ASER for 2019 is based on a survey conducted in 26 districts across 24 states in India, covering over 36,000 children in the age group of 4-8 years.
  • According to the report, among 4-5 year old children, 56.8 per cent girls and 50.4 per cent boys are enrolled in government schools or pre-schools while 43.2 per cent girls and 49.6 per cent boys are enrolled in private pre-schools or schools.

Himachal Pradesh Tourism Department Sets Guinness Record By Preparing Largest Quantity Of 'Khichdi'

  • A 1,995 kg 'khichdi' dish made from rice and lentils, prepared by the Himachal Pradesh Department of Tourism in association with Shimla-based Durga Devi Behari Lal Charitable Trust, entered the Guinness World Records.
  • It was served to devotees on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, the Hindu festival dedicated to the deity Surya, at Tattapani, 55 km from the state capital.

  • Union Minister for Railways Piyush Goyal flagged off new AC 3-tier 'Humsafar Express' train on January 14, 2020. 
  • He flagged off Madhupur (Jharkhand) - Anand Vihar (Delhi) Humsafar Express via video conferencing. The aim of the launch of this train is to provide comfortable journey to passengers. The latest train will be operated under Eastern Railway Zone of Indian Railways.

Statue Of Unity Finds Place In '8 Wonders Of SCO'

  • The 182-meter tall Statue of Unity in Gujarat has been included in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's '8 Wonders of SCO' list, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced.The 'Statue of Unity', the world's tallest statue, is a monumental tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, independent India's first home minister as well as deputy prime minister.
  • The statue was inaugurated in October 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of Patel's 143rd birth anniversary.

Mizoram To Celebrate Chapchar Kut On March 6, 2020

  • Mizoram will celebrate Chapchar Kut, the biggest and most important festival of the Mizos, on March 6, 2020. The meeting of Chapchar Kut organizing committee held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Zoramthanga decided that the festival will be a two-day event.
  • While March 5 will be celebrated as pre-festival, which would be graced by Art and Culture Minister R Lalzirliana as "Kut Pa" or the "father of the festival", the grand celebration will take place on March 6, 2020.
  • "Promotion of Mizos' culture and moral code" has been chosen as the theme for this year Chapchar Kut.
